Caca Brun Mama
How to use
1. Cut henna up into small pieces and put in a heatproof bowl. 2. Add hot water and let steep. Mix to a yogurt-like consistency. 3. Put on gloves and apply from back to front, coating hair thoroughly. 4. Cover in cling wrap for a more vibrant red. Leave on for one to six hours. 5. Rinse, shampoo, and condition hair. Tips: Always do a strand test first. Use face cream (or Ultra Bland) around your hairline and ears to protect skin. Wrap hair in cling film for a redder color. For darker, richer colors, leave on longer (up to six hours).

I am not one to post comments on anything i purchase or try, but this i just had to. I was skeptical in trying Henna based on some of the reviews I had read. I couldn't be happier that i just jumped in and did it.

One thing that caused me to pause was if you hair is chemically treated to wait 6 to 8 weeks (or longer) before using a Henna Product. i waited 6 weeks post chemical coloring. I have naturally dark brown hair, not ash brown, dark brown with red hints in the sun. I love my hair stylist but she is very hard to get an appointment with. The color she used never really dried out my hair (which is thin yet coarse .. yes.. its a possible combination). In an "emergency" situation, i went to someone different. The color she used not only dried my hair within weeks of getting it colored, but the base color in the brown she used was yellow so I had these funky yellow-ish streaks where my grey was starting to grown in. I was a bit scared because i didnt know what color they would turn. Keep in mind, i color my hair all one color. I do not highlight or low light my hair.

this is what i did.

i crushed the whole henna block in a double-zip lock bag and mashed it with a meat tenderizer (good thing i double bagged as the inside bag tore due to me using the wrong side of the tenderizer.

I made a pot on good strong Italian blend BOLD flavored coffee. I added 2 cups of the hot coffee to the Henna along with 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and about 4 tablespoons of Cinnamon. I read the vinegar helps the bonding of the henna to the grey and the coffee gives it a warmer shade. Not sure if any of these items worked. (this was my maiden voyage) The cinnamon is supposed to help with the "smell" some people complain about, but i really liked it.. It reminded me of fresh cut grass on an early spring morning. Very plant-herbal smell. So i mixed all these ingredients together to about the consistency of brownie batter.

My Fiancee' brought home a hot plate that he uses in his lab. I placed the glass bowl with what looked like swamp sludge in it on the hot plate set to low. I redecorated the bathroom with newspapers on the floor, grabbed a chair and went to work.

My hair is below bra strap length and fairly one length. so i divided my hair into 6 sections.

I started with the back sections first. I purchased a hair color brush (for like 99 cents and a color applicator bottle for the same price with a thin spout at the end). So i mixed the henna with a plastic spoon, tested it for warmth, dipped my color applicator brush and started to "paint my hair". I think this was my first mistake. Before i even got to the ends of my hair, the henna was starting to dry and flake off.. so i had dried chunks starting to fall on the floor. So i moved from the brush to the applicator bottle. It was nice at first, then realized that i should have gotten one with a bigger spout. As the Henna started to cool, it became harder and harder to squeeze out.

So after fighting with the brush bottle combination, i just started scooping up the henna using my hands. Trying to get the dry henna soaked hair around my head was a chore, but as the henna got hotter and more liquified it became easier and easier to work with and massage thru my hair.

Phew that was done. I then wrapped my head in saran wrap, placed a shower cap on and went in the living room. I have a heating cap that i use when I deep condition my hair so I put that on as well. (I read Henna loves heat) and kept this on for about an hour and then id take a break and put it back on. I had a dark towel handy to catch the runny drips (which never really happened, or didn't realize it because i had my shower cap on.

I finished applying the Henna at 3:30 in the afternoon and started the rinsing process at 9:30 that evening.

I thought the rinsing was going to be bad but it really wasn't. i wet my hair, pumped a whole hand full of conditioner in my hands and worked it into the Henna. The conditioner really seemed to help break it up. So i conditioned twice (with some cheap conditioner i had), then shampooed twice and conditioned two more times (with my more expensive products).

I was amazed at the results. absolutely the shiniest and most gorgeous brown i have ever seen on my head. so this is the first 24 hours post Henna and I can already see where it has changed colors. My hair became shinier than yesterday, softer than yesterday and even more red than yesterday. it turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous color

i love this product. I will never go back to chemical dyes again.. my hair loves it and its amazing.

My only suggestions is to make sure the henna is on the warm-hot side. its easier to apply and try and get someone to help you (it just makes it that much easier) work fast and dont worry about the mess.

It wipes right off with water with out a stain or a streak. The shower was a bit trickier due to the non slip flooring and the cocoa butter cause a little issue, but nothing that soap didn't take off and bleach after i was done.

I can't wait to do another henna application. This time I might mix the Henna brun with the henna maroon or rouge (in a 2:1 ratio) four blocks of the brun and two blocks of either the maroon or rouge.

(thanks Amy at the St. Louis, West County store for some great advice)

I've been researching henna and indigo dyeing for a few years. I decided to jump in using Lush's caca for my first time.

My bar of Caca Brun is 45 days old, 17 days before the Best Before date. It didn't dye practically at all. I applied with bare hands and got no staining on them. I left the caca on my head 5 hours and saw very very little color (it did turn my grey hair a very light blonde).

I believe the lack of color had to do with the age of the bar. If you buy some, buy the freshest you can find in order to get good results.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I just finished my fourth Lush henna treatment in nine weeks so I feel that I can write an accurate review. Wow! I wish I had found this ten years ago! I read about this product in either Marie Claire or Lucky and I was intrigued. The brick format made me think "I can do this," no mixing required. I read every review and watched videos because I was afraid of a drastic change. Rest assured this can be a gentle, gradual treatment. I have shoulder length dark brown hair with highlights and selected Caca Brun for my first two treatments (used two squares) and for the previous two treatments have used one square Brun and one square Maron. The reviews will make you think this is a big production and for the first time I thought it was, but when I was done I realized it wasn't really a big deal. This is great for covering stray gray hair especially along my hairline. I love that it is such a mild enhancement to my hair, that it's not a drastic change.

Here are my tips:
1. If possible apply your henna outside. That way you don't have to worry about the drips and mess. You won't have to put towels down and it eliminates any clean up afterwards. I brought a full length mirror outside and set it on a stool.
2. Instead of plastic wrap I wrapped my head in an old dry cleaning bag. It's about the size of a bath towel and works perfectly. Plus I feel good about reusing a plastic bag. I can wrap a towel around my head as well and it won't get messy; the towel just helps hold the heat in (as some users have suggested helps the color).
3. The smell is a little wonky. You may like it, you may not. I would not recommend applying the henna hours before you go out or have a date. The smell is a little strong and unusual. I would not want someone whispering in my ear within a few hours of washing it out. Within 24 hours the smell is gone.

I have noticed that the grays start appearing in about two weeks after applying the henna, which is sooner than I'd like. I'm not sure if I'm not leaving the henna on long enough (90 minutes to two hours), not using enough squares (two squares for shoulder length hair) or if it just fades quickly. What's so great about this is that I can continue to experiment without fearing that I will ruin my hair. No one will even notice, just me.

I originally bought this as a supplement to my hairdresser's $40 single process treatment which I had to do every six to eight weeks. I figured if I could do this once in between professional treatments I'd be saving a little money. I even 'fessed up to my hairdresser and she said that henna is fine and she can continue to do the single process whenever I'd like. I don't have to wait until it grows out.

Start small and go slowly, you have nothing to lose!!

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I chose this as an alternative to store bought dyes and salon dyes because they are so harsh on my hair. I have medium thick hair that is extremely dry with quite a bit of stubborn gray.
Definitely commit either a good portion of your afternoon to applying and waiting for Caca to work-or I prefer to apply it before bed, wrap my hair in an old T-shirt and allow it to set overnight. (I had much better results this way) Caca Brun not only gave my color a boost, it left my hair very silky and didn't completely cover my gray, which is why I chose this product over store bought dyes. I reapply about every 3 months. The only other downside other than it being a time consuming product to use is the mess it creates- but if you let the henna crumbles dry- they are easily swept up.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I got the henna treatment for my hair because I was done with the harsh effects and smells of chemical dyes, however I didn't count on the amount of time that went into applying this product. I applied the henna using 3 blocks (half the bar)easily enough and while the small wasn't bad at that point it wasn't very good smelling either. After having it in for about 2 hours it began to feel heavy on my head but I stayed strong and kept it in for 4.5 hours. It was difficult to wash out, but that could be due to my thin hair, and the next morning my hair smelt terrible and was very greasy.
However the color is nice. I hope sometime in the future these will be mixed with something to counter the miserable lingering scent.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

Over 3 years ago my childhood eczema returned and my eyes were puffy and red and I looked terrible. Cortisone cream wasn't helping much and I tried to see if I was having food allergies. Turned out it was my chemical hair color. I decided to try the Lush Caca Brun and have been super happy with it. It looks very natural and my hair is very shiny. I only need to reapply when my roots come in, there is no brassy fading like I had with chemical color. My skin problems are gone. Sometimes I mix Caca Rouge with the Caca Brun but if I get too much my chunk of gray the temple looks too Bozo the Clown. Other gray hairs just get a nice highlight effect as others have mentioned. This looks really natural. I really think it is my only option for hair color and I am thankful for it. My hair is medium length and I get 3 applications from the bar- great deal. There are good tutorial videos and the staff at my Lush store is very helpful.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

***NOTE*** MAKE SURE YOU BUY IT AS FRESH AS POSSIBLE TO GET THE BEST RESULTS!!

I have dyed my hair every color of the rainbow practically (ok not EVERY color... but a LOT). And all of it was always harsh chemicals. I've had it black, platinum blonde, chocolate brown, merlot red.... highlights... low lights... ombre... ya. Everything you can think of....

So the only time my hair has ever been pretty healthy is when I was letting it grow out and was only dyeing it brownish every few months. It got super long and was nice and smooth and shiny. Then I had a brilliant idea that I wanted to try doing ombre. I shouldn't have messed with my gorgeous hair. Ever since then it's been a MESS of color (it's not even) and it's dry and brittle from about halfway down to the ends. I turned to Lush's Caca henna hair dyes to try and color without it continuing to wreck my hair like other dyes have...

Here's how I started off: my bottom half of my hair still had some of the blondeish (it wasn't that bright of a blonde, it was a dark blonde) ombre, there were also some darker low lights mixed in because my hair stylist never did do a FULL ombre (she just added in blonde "highlights" to the ends... it was a strange process that I was never really happy with).... so the top 2-3 inches were virgin hair, next 3-4 inches had been dyed brown 1-2 times and then the bottom half was that mess of blonde and lowlights.... ya... BIG MESS....

I was sort of scared to use the henna because of what a mess my hair was. But honestly after reading so many reviews stating how well it conditioned it and made it shinier I finally gave in.

They are NOT kidding about this being time consuming AND messy! I didn't grate mine. Just chopped all the blocks up (I used a WHOLE bar because my hair is halfway down my back). So I put all 6 blocks into a big glass bowl I have, brewed up some coffee (instead of just hot water) and in a separate pan brought water to a boil. I put the glass bowl in the pan with the water to keep it heated and then added coffee a little at a time (and some olive oil to help with the consistency) until I got it to a texture that I thought would be suitable for applying to hair. I laid down a TON of newspaper all over my bathroom..... I mean EVERYWHERE. And I'm so glad I did.

At first I tried using a squeeze bottle like I'd seen one girl on Youtube use. NOPE... wasn't working. My hair is just too long and thick. Then I tried using one of those hair dye brush applicator things. NOPE. Still didn't work because of my hair length and thickness.... I finally just resorted to using my fingers (wearing gloves of course). I went thru 8-10 pairs of latex gloves because I kept taking them off to clean my face and neck off periodically so they wouldn't get stained (I also cleaned my sink throughout so it didn't get stained either)......

It took a bit to figure out a method that worked for applying it. But once I got the swing of it, it went a little faster.... but let me reiterate about the newspaper thing. Once it starts drying it cracks and crumbles and flakes and goes EVERYWHERE. I had to reposition some of the hair that already had dye on it and it sent little crumbles flying everywhere!!

So finally about an hour-hour and half after I started applying (that doesn't even bring into account the time it took to "cook" it) I was finally done and I clipped it all up on top of my head. I looked CRAZAY!.... I let it sit for 3.5 hours and left i UNCOVERED because I didn't want it to be super reddish colored.

Lucky for me I have a shower head that detaches. IT took about 10 minutes of being bent over the tub with the shower head just rinsing and rinsing and rinsing to finally get to a point where I could stand up, undress all the way and turn my head upward and normal and take a normal shower. I don't recommend just taking a shower to start rinsing because it gets EVERYWHERE when you are at this step. Once I got those first 10 minutes out of the way and I DID start taking a normal shower then it got easier. I used my Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner to get it all out. I shampooed once and then conditioned three times (the conditioner actually helped it rinse out MORE then the shampoo). I rinsed until the water was clear!

I could tell it was softer already even while it was stil wet. I could actually use my fingers to detangle which I couldn't do before. Combing it was a breeze. And as it air dried I could tell it had more volume but wasn't dried out! It enhanced and deepened the virgin hair, darkened the old blonde, deepened the old lowlights and anything that was SUPER blonde or grey is now a pretty golden/auburn highlight. It's GORGEOUS. and SOOOOOOO shiny and soft! My natural waves look GAWWWWGEOUS! (which I hardly EVER say!)..... I have to say I am impressed by this stuff!

I will definitely be doing it again, even tho it was a pain in the REAR :P I think at some point I might mix a block of the Caca Noir in to darken my hair even more! (I like when my hair is a darker color!). My absolute FAVE part is the way the virgin hair turned out. SUPER shiny and has a golden glow to it. Like honey! LOVE IT!!

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I have Asian hair and have been dying my hair with chemical dye for the past 20 years. I dye my hair to cover up my grays and to lighten my hair from jet black to a chocolate brown. After getting some bad health news, I decided I wanted to use only natural products from now on. So,this is my first experience with henna/indigo.

I'm about 40 percent gray with a concentrated patch on my temples and sideburns.I didn't know if henna/indigo would cover up the gray. What I first did was I purchased 100% henna and indigo on my own and put that in my hair. I used 50-50% henna and indigo (which I think is the ratio in the Caca Rouge). My hair, where it was chemically dyed a medium brown, became maroon color and my grays turned an orange copper color. Imagine a whole head of almost deep reddish hair and then temples and sideburns completely orange and orange/copper highlights throughout my hair!

So, the next day, I put the Caca Brun(which is 75% indigo and 25% henna according to the sales person) in my hair to get rid of the orange hair. My hair turned out the same color as my natural color -darkest brown/black. The orange grays became a nice dark red highlight. Since half my hair is gray, the highlights blend in nicely now with the darker hair. I'm hoping the red will darken as the days go by, since I'm not a fan of red hair color. But this color might be from the henna of my first application.

The Good: The mixture is easy to make. It's great if you want to dye your hair right away and not have to wait overnight for dye release. You don't have to worry about mixing up the henna/indigo ratios for the color you want. It's mositurizing and left my hair very shiny.

The Bad: The smell is horrible. I tried very hard to keep it on for 4-6 hrs. but I had to wash it off after 3 hours because I threw up from the smell. The henna/indigo powder I bought didn't smell this bad. It has to be some fragrance that they put into the Caca Brun that makes it smell so terrible. It smelled after I washed it out, and still stunk until the third day after.

The second worse thing is that it left green dye all over. I had to really scrub my tub to get it out. It also left green stains on my towels and pillow cases even after I washed my hair for 10 mins. with conditioner and a vinegar rinse, which I read helps the indigo stick to hair better. I will have to wash my hair for at least 20 mins. next time. I didn't use shampoo because I've read many times this washes the indigo right out of your hair. The day after, I would touch my hair and my hands would turn green. So, that night I decided to wash my hair with shampoo because I couldn't take the smell or the green stains everywhere. It did help. The dye stopped coming off as much, but when I ran my hands through my hair, there was still a little green film coming off.

Overall, commercial hair dye is so much easier and produces a prettier color. But, I'd rather go through the pain and lackluster color of using henna/indigo for my health.

I have dark brown curly hair about half-way down my back. I used four squares, but I almost ran out so I'll probably use five next time.

I didnt really want to change my hair color, but I have some grays around my hairline that I want to cover.

The process is time consuming, but it's not as messy as some other reviews have said. Just make sure you cover the floor and counters with newspaper and make sure you have a buddy to help out. I cant imagine doing it all myself.

The color is pretty subtle. It didnt change the color as much as make it richer. The grays turned dark blond and blend in as highlights. Also my hair feels super soft and less frizzy.
    Overall I recommend.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

Wow, I feel like I have a brand new head of hair! My hair is very thick and the darkest shade of brown/just shy of black. It was also stuck in a bit of a rut. While it has huge shine, style, and softness potential, it stopped responding to my usual vinegar rinses, oil treatments, and styling products. It felt coarse, damaged, and weighted down.

I'd heard about the Caca treatments for years, and decided to try it on a whim while shopping at the Tyson's Corner location. The sales rep said that it wouldn't change the color of my dark hair, but instead add a warm gloss. This is what I did:
      - used 2-3 blocks for chest-length hair
      - roughly cut the blocks into big pieces (no need to grate it - this will save a lot of time)
      - put the pieces into a ceramic bowl within a simmering pot of water (make a bain marie)
      - poured boiling water over the Caca until it was barely covered
      - let it sit in the simmering water for 30 min. and stirred occassionally (the Caca should start forming a brownie batter consistency at this point)
      - took off the heat and pour in 2 tbsp. olive/coconut oil
      - added a liberal amount of spices to add fragrance and help the color along (I used a cinnamon, cardamom, clove blend - these have a natural, small amount of hydrogen peroxide in them)
      - applied coconut oil to skin around the hairline and ears
      - tied hair in a low ponytail
      - applied henna mixture on dry (2 day old) hair using gloved hands while standing in the shower, first to the crown of my head. I massaged it in repeatedly through to the roots. Then I undid my ponytail and applied the henna through the ends, working it all into a big, goopy updo on top of my head.
      - covered it in two plastic bags and a towel and went to bed for 8+ hours

I had to shampoo my hair 3 times to get everything out the next morning, and spend a few extra minutes cleaning the shower, but...wow!!!! My hair has been so soft, shiny, and easy to style. It is literally gleaming and outside, has a dark brown sheen to it. I'm a teacher and my students have noticed the difference too.

Since using Caca Brun, I have washed my hair 4 times. The effect continues to last. I will keep using this as often as needed! Highly recommended for anyone who needs a 'hair'lift!

I was so wrong. I have really long and thick/fine hair. My hair soaks up colorant like it is going out of style. Per other's recommendations I added water/coffee until the henna brick was the consistency of cake batter and then began my application at the roots. These two elements doomed me from the get go. If you have thick and long hair I highly recommend making your batter more liquid and applying the product from root to tip in sections. I added mud to the roots all over my head and then tried to manage my humungous muddy hair and apply to the remainder of my hair. It was hilarious and I was desperate. Luckily, my hubby is an angel and came to my rescue. By the time my hair was coated from root to tip their was mud all over me, the floor, the sink, the counter and my husband. It was rediculous. I am happy to report that we both saw the humor in the situation which made the mess funny instead of tragic. I am currently sitting down with a huge muddy head under an equally huge turban towel. I am curious to see how this experience turns out. Hopefully (fingers crossed) we got all of my hair colored and it will be a happy reveal. I will report back once I see the results. Oh...the smell is not pleasant but it is not bad. It is just very herbally with mud undertones. Personally, I found it far less offensive than the chemical smell you get with commercial colorants. I know it sounds like I don't like this product but that is just not the case. As long as you know what you are getting into first and prepare for the journey I would highly recommend this alternative hair color. :)

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

My BFF and I tried the Caca Brun for the first time last night. We were timid, but are both looking for natural looking covering of those pesky greys! We both have shoulder length hair, so we did a double batch and dyed each other's hair.
We broke up a full bar in a gallon size bag as we were told by our lush store that we'd each need 3 squares. As advised, we kept adding boiling water... it took more water to mix and make thin enough to spread than we expected. This was a longer process than we planned for too. When applied to your hair, it feels (and looks) like mud, and our hair dried it pretty quickly. WORK FAST to massage it down to your roots and throughout your hair! We went through a few pairs of gloves during this... next time I'll use kitchen gloves. The 3 squares each seemed too much, we had alot left over when we were both done.

We then covered with shower caps and had a few drinks and watched movies. When we couldn't stand it any longer, (we were getting headaches... from what we are not sure... the heat from the shower cap or the weight of all that muddy henna on our heads)about 5 hours passed since we had applied. (or 1.5 movies and 2 blenders of drinks!) We called it quits and were ready to see the results.
Rinsing directly under the bath faucet before getting in the shower helped get it out.
The result is BEAUTIFUL natural colored, multi toned brown. My natural color is closer to black than hers, and after henna it still is. Her hair is lighter than mine still. There is no lasting stink of henna in my house, shower or head. (Clean the shower right away!) And we will both be doing this again. Get the girls together and have fun!

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I waited SO long to get my hands on this product and the time has finally came for me to get to try it! (I live in a state without a lush :( I had to wait till a recent trip to San Francisco to pick it up.)

I would definitely say that it was worth the wait! The henna made my hair VERY soft and shiny, not as glossy and rich as I had hoped but it is still noticably shinier. Also, I noticed that I have less split ends. My bangs have the most damage as they get the most heat styling done to them and they are SO soft and no more split ends. I am going to assume the caca brun mama did this!

I was a little disappointed that the color wasn't as noticeable as I had hoped. However, I think this is actually because I have dark brown hair as it is. I had died it a more auburn color and my roots were showing, in addition to my highlights coming through from a previous trip to the salon. The henna DID cover up my highlights really well (which was my overall goal)! My hair looks pretty much one color now, which I am happy about. Also, it was a very messy process, as most reviews have mentioned. I eventually gave up on trying to have a method to my application (no dye brush, just my two gloved hands) and pretty much began just going for it and dunking my head in the bowl and piling the henna on. I wrapped my hair in plastic wrap and left it for 3 hours due to a time constraint. I used hot coffee to mix the henna, just a little bit of water, and put some apple cider vinegar in there thanks to another suggestion I saw from another user.

All in all, I loved this product. Maybe next time I will try a color that is not as similar to mine to see more of a difference. I would also note that this is good for those of us who are having that itch to color our hair AGAIN. This henna won't break the bank like a good salon color will, and it's amazing on the hair.

Thank you for making such a fabulous product, Lush!! xoxoxo

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

What fun! Many of the complaints I heard said that it smelled bad and that it was too messy. I thought it smelled lovely, like herbal tea. And it was definitely messy, but in a fun way. I felt like a kid playing with mud (I put a lot of a newspaper down and it took me all of one minute to clean up).

I used half the block, grated. Instead of water, I used about a cup of coffee and 1 1/2 tablespoons of cinnamon. I thought the smell was wonderful, and after a few minutes, I couldn't smell it anymore. Not like chemical hair dyes where I have to step into the other room just to escape the smell.

I had some difficulty getting it to the right consistency; I kept having to add more coffee. It was tricky to apply because I used my hands. I was afraid that because my hair was clumping up, the color would be patchy,so I added more coffee to get it more liquid-y. It didn't come out perfect; there's some parts underneath that didn't get colored, but I'm going to chalk it up to it being my first time using the product. The dye that I managed to get on my arms and neck came right off with a wet paper towel.

I covered my head with saran wrap and left it on for about four hours (next time I'll do it longer, but I didn't have the time) and I was quite pleased with the color and how soft my hair was.

I'm definitely converted. No more chemical dyes for me ever again!

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I am writing this review for anyone curious about how this product works on hair extensions. I bought this product yesterday because I bought chocolate brown hair extensions that were a little too light (and had red undertones) for my dark brown hair. The people at Lush recommended Caca Brun because it was closest to my natural hair color, and it was likely to reduce the red undertones.

I left the product in for about four hours near my heater because I was told that heat helps bring out the color. It took a LONG time to wash this henna out of the extensions, and I would recommend anyone who uses this product for extensions to definitely have a lot of space to lay out the extensions and color them with a dye brush. I just mixed them all up in a bowl, and it took me over an hour to wash out the dye and de-tangle my hair. It takes patience, but they are still in good shape.

About the color-- the color is about a half a shade darker, but much more deep (I realize this sounds a bit confusing, but it is truly hard to explain the results, since they aren't too drastic). They still don't match perfectly, but they match way better. I am still toying with doing my natural hair with the henna, but I worry because my base color is nothing comparable to the original color of my extensions, and I worry I may end up with the same mismatch problem again.

Overall, I think it was worth it. The extensions are still in great condition (they are real hair), and they seem healthier looking and more natural. The color is subtle, but again, that is what I needed. I would definitely use this again, but I would be more thoughtful (I would definitely use a brush to avoid tangles and mess).

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

This is my new go to hair dye. I have been dying my hair since I was 13. I have tried every product out there from professional to drugstore and this out does them all. The color is beautiful and looks so natural. I love it. I am a natural brunette but I haven't seen that color is a bit of time. This has brought me back to almost my perfect match.

The process is a little time consuming but I thought it was fun. This is what I did:
First, I grated two of the smaller blocks into a bowl. I than added 1.5 cups of dark roast coffee to the mix (add it untill it ets to a yogurt type look). I then added 1/4 cups of apple cidar vinegar and mixed this all together.
I had placed everything into a small metal mixing bowl, I then placed with within a pot of boiling water to keep it warm.
I sectioned my hair and just went to town added it on. My hair is medium thick and roughly to the top of my breast and the amount I made was perfect. I covered my hair and then wrapped it in plastic wrap. I left this sit for 2.5 hours and then let it air dry for 1.5 hours.
Showering was not as hard as I thought it would be. I first wet and rinsed my hair to get the mixture not to rough on my hair. I then used an olive oil based shampoo and washed it twice, deep conditioned once, and shampoo one more time. This got all of the product from my hair.

It looks beautiful and it so shiny and soft. My ONLY complaint would be the smell. I don't find it to be a bad smell, I do enjoy it, but there is a smell even after you wash your hair. As I sit here at work, I continue to smell it from time to time.

All in all, amazing product. I will forever buy this.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I am officially addicted to this. I have dyed my hair for the past 10 years and have recently gotten back to my natural color, a medium brown with red highlights, but the color was incredibly dull. I left this in for 6 hours covered in plastic wrap and it came out a beautiful chocolate brown, but my red highlights are definitely still visible in the sun. The best thing about this product, though, is the amazing conditioning. My hair was incredibly dry and damaged, but after using caca brun, it was incredibly soft and shiny- more than it has ever been. I am blown away with how healthy my hair feels now.

This can be very messy on the first go around so have ample amounts of paper towel handy. Other than that this is a fabulous product which gives a subtle but warm change. My hair is naturally red and it has turned it a warm auburn-y colour. I have used Lush henna before and will definitely use it again if not for the colour then for the softness I'm left with!

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I saw a review of this on the Internet and it was so glowing, my interest was completely piqued. I read the comments on Lush's website and decided to go to my local Lush ASAP.

My issue is that I, a natural brunette on the dark side of mousy, made a rash decision to have a professional strip my already box-dyed hair and lighten it all the way to platinum. A few months in, the maintenance was just too much, and I used at-home dye to go back to brown. My hair is now about 50% new growth (which doesn't have a lot of gray--I'm in my early 20s, but it definitely has some telltale strands) and 50% blonde-dyed brown. I hadn't touched my hair with dye since June, but it was still crunchy and breaking off. My color was a sort of brassy accidental ombre, and I wanted to even it out without any more damage. I couldn't resist the rumored conditioning effects of Caca Brun mama.

I mixed about 3/4 of the block with some strong coffee and a little bit of apple cider vinegar. I could probably have gone with less, but this was my first time and I made my first batch a little too thick. I finally reached the perfect consistency/temp on my last batch (I ended up making 3 just to get everything completely covered).

I agree that when the mix is too thick, it definitely is messier. My bathroom suffered some collateral damage, but no more than with regular box hair dye, and hopefully less permanent. After I applied the mix with my hands (gloved, but one finger did get slightly stained during cleanup), I covered the whole deal with a shower cap and swept and scrubbed and it was no problem.

I left the mix on for 4.5 hours, 3 with the shower cap on, 1.5 without, and it took several washings with shampoo and several more with conditioner to get all the grit out. That mess went down my shower drain pretty well. And when I was done, the improvement was REMARKABLE! The result is so much more even, though it is still a little lighter/redder where my hair was its blondest (I think imperceptably so to anyone but me). And the shine, oh the shine! All I wanted was that beautiful, gleaming dark brown that chemical virgins just HAVE, and I have gotten as close as I believe I can come! I still have some split ends and dryness, but some olive oil and R & B did its part to finish what the dye started.

I am working on growing out/chopping off all my blonde, and was tempted after that to never dye again. I think that Caca Brun Mama has dissuaded me! The long-term results remain to be seen, but at this point I'm totally in the honeymoon stage and plan on eternal loyalty! I think in short, I love this product because it does everything it says it would, which is a miracle for me.

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I prepared the product per the directions, but see many people who claim to just add hot water to the henna and steep. I will try that next time because the whole double boiler thing is a mess BUT it is worth the mess and the time committment. I love the color, even if it is slightly different each time. Initially, it makes my har greasy after processing it and I don't use shampoo until the next day for fear of stripping the color. Using shampoo probably won't do this but I don't want to take the risk of removing or changing the color. I don't mind the smell as some refer to or the mess because the outcome is worth it! Until I read some of the reviews, I didn't know there was a best if used by so I probably should not have purchased another 6 bars until I was done with the first, I just didn't want to be without it or run out or have to pay for shipping when I could buy it when I visited my daughter in Minneapolis and the Mall of America!!! I LOVE IT!!!

Comments about Caca Brun Mama Hair Henna:

I was thrilled to find lush henna bars. I have used henna for many years and this is the best out there. The infusion with cocoa emolients was a brilliant addition. I used henna for the conditioning affect, the color is just a fun bonus. If you dont like the color, no worries, it gradually fades and wont leave rediculous tell tale roots. Lush henna gives you shiney glowing soft hair. If you stay in your own color range it gives you enhanced deeper color.
Henna makes a mess, thats just the nature of the beast. Others complain of the smell, stop whining! Its far better than the chemical smell of harsh hair dyes.

The lady on the phone did not say that the indigo has trouble adhering to blond. I just read in your FAQs that it does. Should I still start with brun? or start with rouge or marren and then brun as you suggest on here?

                  • A:

I've been swimming since applying Caca Brun and the chlorine did not change the color at all. I have dark brown hair and used the Caca Brun to deepend my color. I swim competitively, so I wear a cap and I rinse my hair before and after swimming to minimize any fading that the chlorine may cause.

I have dark brown hair, but to me it looks a little mousy sometimes. It has natural red undertones, which sometimes have come out when i have gotten highlights. I want a more richer shade of brown, but will this give my hair an auburn tint?

I would say probably. They told me to leave my hair uncovered while it sat to keep it from going towards a red shade, but even uncovered I can tell it's got an auburn hint (you'd probably see it most in the sunlight).... I'd say if you want a RICH chocolatey brown look into mixing a block or two of the Noir bar (probably just ONE) because it has blue tones to it that'll balance out the orange/redish tones in the Brun bar. I've seen pics of some girls who do that mix and it doesn't look auburnish to me, it looks more like a rich, dark chocolate brown! I hope this helps!

Caca Brun contains indigo henna, which has some difficulty adhering to lighter-coloured hair, so we don't recommend using it directly on white or grey hair because it does tend to be less effective when used that way. However, our redder hennas (Caca Rouge and Caca Marron) have no problem adhering to any colour of hair, so your best bet is to apply Caca Rouge (or Caca Marron) as a base coat, and then you can do an application of Caca Brun afterward to achieve the coverage and effect you're looking for!

It colored my few grays a lighter shade of brown. They look like golden, honey, warm brown highlights. Remember, henna is semi-permanent, so those grays will show themselves again as the henna fades. It's been 6 weeks since I did mine, and my grays are visible only at the new growth line so far!

The henna should deepen your color, however, you will likely have to leave it on for a longer amount of time in order to achieve your desired color. We always recommend performing a strand test ahead of time to ensure that you are happy with the results!

Henna is a permanent method of coating your hair with color. You should notice the color start to fade after about 6-8 weeks.

Our hennas are made of entirely natural ingredients, so it's unlikely for them to react with conventional hair dyes. That said, we don't recommend using Caca Brun on grey or blonde hair as the indigo henna it contains has trouble catching onto lighter hair. If you would like to use Caca Brun, you can apply Caca Rouge or Caca Marron first, which will give your hair a "base coat" that Caca Brun will more reliably cling to.

Our hennas are not tested on hair extensions; however, they are most certainly tested on human hair! Since your extensions have not been dyed before, it sounds like Caca Brun should work like a charm on them! You might want to check with the maker of these extensions just to be sure, and if it is possible to do a small sample test, that would also be a good idea, just to ensure that the results are what you're going for!

Because blonde hair does not contain any pigment, the henna can sometimes have a little bit harder of a time adhering to the hair. Red henna has a little bit of an easier time holding on to the hair, and the Caca Brun does contain red henna so it should take to the hair with a little bit of effort. We would recommend keeping it on for a longer length of time, and as always, performing a strand test to make sure that the end results are what you are looking for!

There is really no suggested quantities of water to be used when preparing your Henna application. We advise that you add hot water slowly allowing it to steep and then mix with blocks of Henna to produce a yogurt-like consistency. As the mixture cools down during the Henna application, you may slowly add more water to maintain the consistency and keep the mixture hot.I hope this helps!

If you are going for dark, chestnut brown, Caca Brun is definitely the henna to go with, as the Noir will be too dark. You can certainly try mixing the two, though we always recommend doing a strand test before doing your entire head of hair so you get a good idea of what to expect.

Since we do not test our hennas in combination with any chemical treatments, we would not be able to say for sure either way. That said, the chemicals that are used to chemically straighten are different from henna so there shouldn't be a problem. As always, we recommend doing a strand test before the treatment to make sure that the results are what you're looking for.

last question: is putting my hair under the dryer going to have better results when I rinse?

                    A:

Caca Brun has been formulated to contain coffee already, so there's no need to add more to the mixture unless you're feeling adventurous. For first-time henna users, I always recommend using the products as they are for a while before mixing in new additives to be on the safe side. As for going brown, while covering the hair with plastic wrap will temporarily keep it a warmer reddish tone, this will darken after you rinse the product out, as the indigo continues to oxidize over the next day or two post-application. Your best bet is to do a strand test first, and continue to observe it for a couple of days, and if you like the result, then proceed with a full application.

Let's say that I do this henna today ( August 5, 2012) and i only apply it this once , and in a few months the henna eventually fades from my hair and whatnot, but I don't apply it again. While henna is a permanent change to the hair, it can fade in intensity over time. You may still be able to safely use chemical dyes after using henna, but please perform a strand test in advance to be certain that your hair will be the colour you like, especially if you already have henna on it, and want to introduce chemical dyes.

Henna cannot be easily removed from the hair, which is why we recommend a strand test prior to a full hair application. You may be able to apply another layer of Caca Brun to deepen the colour to a more brown shade, however, we do not really have any way to remove it, as it is a permanent colour change. The colour will slowly fade over time, however if you do plan to use a synthetic dye on top, it is extremely important to do a strand test prior.

I would absolutely recommend ordering two. The henna works best when it is applied in a very thick coating, so making sure that the hair is covered thickly and evenly is best. It is better to have more than you'll need and save an extra block or two for next time than to find that you do not have enough!
