Caca Rouge Mama
How to use
1. Cut henna up into small pieces and put in a heatproof bowl. 2. Add hot water and let steep. Mix to a yogurt-like consistency. 3. Put on gloves and apply from back to front, coating hair thoroughly. 4. Cover in cling wrap for a more vibrant red. Leave on for one to six hours. 5. Rinse, shampoo, and condition hair. Tips: Always do a strand test first. Use face cream (or Ultra Bland) around your hairline and ears to protect skin. Wrap hair in cling film for a redder color. For darker, richer colors, leave on longer (up to six hours).

I have never used henna before, but absolutely adore LUSH products, so I thought I'd trade up and go with henna dye. I read all the reviews before attempting this and was a little worried it would be a lot of work. As it turns out, if you know what you're doing, it's not as difficult as people make it out to be.

First of all, if you want the dye to be smooth and consistent, use a cheese grater to shred the bar rather than just pouring boiling water over pieces. I have fairly short hair too, so I only needed to use 2 out of 6 of the pieces. When adding water, it doesn't need to be boiling, just hot. I used about 1/3 cups hot water per square. Once you pour the hot water over the shredded henna, mix it until completely blended, the mixture will be smooth and thick. Make sure you put on gloves and then just grab small globs of the dye and mix into hair. As long as you use small amounts at a time, it shouldn't be that messy. Once you're done, I would suggest covering your hair with saran wrap. I had very blonde hair before, so I left the mixture on my hair for 6 hours (if you have darker hair, you may only need to leave it on half that amount of time). It may seem like a long time, but if you have chores to do around the house or a couple of movies you've been wanting to watch, it's not that bad. When time is up, just rinse it our like you would any other dye. It will run out of your hair like slimy mud and may take a while to completely rinse out. I would suggest shampooing your hair at least twice to get it all out. The smell of the dye can be a bit overwhelming, but if you have a strong shampoo, it won't be so bad. When everything was rinsed out of my hair, it smelled kind of like a ginger tea.

Everything I said may seem like a lot of work, but it's really not that difficult. My end result (since my hair was so blonde before hand) was a very vibrant, almost copper, red. Well worth all the work that went into it. When everything was done, my hair felt a lot healthier too. I would definitely recommend this to someone who want the bright color, but without the damage that comes with traditional dyes

I am a natural strawberry red/blonde color with long thick hair.. In past few months too many people have said my hair was looking kind of blonde these days so i decided I would try this product to see if it would enhance my color well... so far I have only done a strand test and below is a picture so you can see the difference in color....
I left the test color in for 4 hours and had added only hot water and cinnamon. I also put a small piece of plastic wrap around the test hair. Next time i will also add olive oil.
I am not sure i like the color of my hair... it is a bit too orange for my liking and I also found the color to be uneven through out the strand of hair even though i spent a long time rubbing it in.
I plan on doing the rest of my head in a week or so because I look silly with a strip of orange in the hair. I will not being leaving the henna in for so long next time as i was looking for a more subtle color change!
I didn't find this product to be messy as other people have said and I actually liked the smell of it! It smells like lush... what more do you expect?!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I can not properly express how incredibly happy I am with this hair coloring product. I have never colored my hair because I don't like the maintenance of it, the expense, the chemicals and I don't like the "fake" look of colored hair.

This natural product is truly amazing. It provides a beautiful tone, sheen, brightness on top of my natural color(s). It looks extremely natural. I constantly get compliments on how it looks.

Many of my friends have asked what I use and want to get the same product.

I highly, highly, highly recommend this product.

Oh yeah, I have long hair - although fine - and I only need to use one of the little squares for my hair per time. No need to use the entire block!

(But, just so you realize, it did/does wash out in about 4 weeks-ish - obviously depending on how often you wash your hair.)

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I'm absolutely in love with my hair! I have long, pretty thick, naturally curly auburn hair. I was hesitant at first, but the lovely ladies of Lush in Victor, NY talked me into it (aren't they great at that?). They even offered to apply it for me, so I made an appointment for a day where I had no classes. The associate told me to leave it in for two hours, but I left it on for three just to be sure. When rinsing it out, try to get as much of the product out of your hair as you can before you shampoo, though it may take a while to work through your hair because the henna becomes clumpy and grainy as it dries in your hair. I got generous samples of Blousey shampoo and Happy Happy Joy Joy conditioner, so I used those after I rinsed out the henna. When my hair dried, I was so pleased with the vibrant yet natural color. My hair was left super soft, felt thicker, and I didn't have a bad hair day for a good couple weeks after, which is amazing since my hair is pretty unpredictable. It's been about a month since I got it done, and the color is still amazing, especially in the sun. I thought this would be a one-time thing, but I'll definitely do this again. I'm a little afraid to do it myself though!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I have used this three times now and I am in love. This has become the only hair dye I use. I like the smell and it leaves my hair super super shiny. My hair is dark brown-black that rusts in summer, so the color change isn't dramatic, but it does give my hair a reddish glow in sunlight that is nice. I use it primarily for the conditioning effect, to even out the color, and to cover up the few gray hairs I have prematurely started getting. I don't have to color as frequently as I did when I used box dyes which is rad and I have pretty much stopped using conditioner since my hair no longer seems to need it. It turns my grays into a lovely warm copper color that doesn't fade.

I like to use a cheese grater to break up the block so I don't have to spend a lot of time breaking up half melted chunks while mixing. I also add cinnamon and about 3-4 capfuls of apple cider vinegar. I use conditioner when washing it out and it helps get all the grit out completely and quickly. This dye takes way less time to washout then manic panic and box dyes and bleeds less on my towels and pillow cases, too.

It is more time consuming for me than it is messy. I wait for a day in which I am just kicking it at home and watch a movie/play video games/knit while I wait for it to develop for about 5-6 hours. A wee bit of a hassle, but worth it in my opinion.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

Ok, so as many have said this IS a little messy. But now you know that and can prepare! I just wrap my shoulders in an old towel and do this in the bathroom where everything can be wiped down.

I chop mine up into pieces, and toss in a little cinnamon and paprika, and pour boiling water over it. I put a small plate on top of the bowl and let it sit for a few min to soften. Then I mix it up and add more water until I like the constancy. The cool thing is that you can make it really thin for more of a treatment rather than a full blown dye. Thin it out more with some olive oil if you are going with the treatment route your hair will be awesome!

Now I have really REALLY thick hair so im sure it would be less messy if I didn't have so much to cover, but I pretty much just put on some gloves and go for it in sections starting at the roots. I like to rub on some shea butter around my hairline and on my ears beforehand too, to keep from dying my face... hehe.

Once everything is covered there are usually henna crumbs EVERYWHERE. So after I wrap my head with a plastic produce bag, yes you read that right they are PERFECT for this! I grab the vacuums and clean up the mostly dried crumb-particles, then use a damp cloth to clean up the rest. Stains aren't usually an issue for me.

After a rinse and repeat its all done and I have beautiful, soft, earthy smelling hair, and I love it!

I'd Honestly Rather Use Chemical Dyes...

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

First of all, don't do this alone. That's the best advice I can give you, right there. Even if you've been dying your own hair with chemical dyes for years or whatever, GET A FRIEND OR SOMEONE TO HELP YOU. You're going to need it, especially if it's your first time trying Henna. I also suggest using whatever room in your house has the biggest sink (for me, it's my kitchen). They tell you to lay down newspaper, and I personally suggest taking the paranoid approach and coating ANYTHING you don't want possibly stained with newspaper. We cleared off my entire counter and sink, and covered the floor and counter in newspaper. Also, if you aren't careful, the henna will stain whatever bowl you put it in. I recommend buying cheap bowls that you don't care about.

The package directions tell you to cut the brick into small chunks. I recommend crushing it, or shaving it. Cutting it up was a pain, but the brick is VERY crumbly, so crushing it is easier. It also makes mixing it easier. The directions also tell you to stir the henna and water until it looks about the consistency of brownie mix. GO THINNER. If it's that thick (or worse, thicker) it's very difficult to apply, and you'll already have enough of a trial applying it. Definitely make it thinner.

Application is... laborious. It's kind of expected, going in, but it's REALLY time-consuming. I suggest doing all of your roots first, section by section, and then going back to do the rest of your hair. I have breast-length hair, and doing it that way took 25-30 minutes to get my hair fully coated. I definitely suggest using a brush to apply it (available at any beauty store). The dye hardens as it dries, and it crumbles, so be prepared for that as well. It's very heavy, too, so if you aren't used to that, steel yourself. By the time I could wash it out, my neck was killing me.

The instructions say to leave it on for 1-2 hours, but the girl I talked to in the store suggested 3. Waiting is tedious if, like me, you're used to chemical dyes that only stay on for 25-30 minutes, or have never dyed your hair at all. The dye is also the texture and consistency of mud or clay, and- as I said- hardens as it dries and is heavy. Wrap your hair in saran wrap like the directions recommend, but I would also suggest putting a shower cap over top. I didn't have one, and spent all three hours trying not to rest my head on anything, in case the cling wrap wasn't fully covering my head. I didn't want to stain anything, and instead got a crick in my neck. Also, those crumbly bits I mentioned seem to escape no matter what you do, and get EVERYWHERE.

Rinsing the dye out is the real pain. Chemical dyes are easy because you simply rinse until the water is clear and then condition. With this, the water didn't really get tinted too terribly, so I had to rely on how my hair felt. Also, those dry crumbs refused to leave my hair, and my hair tangled as I tried to get all of them out. It took about 20 minutes just to rinse my hair of all the grit, and then another 15 of working my shampoo (I use Blousey) into my hair to really clean it. I have fine hair, and with Blousey I normally only need to condition every other day because my hair feels silky enough after the shampoo, but once I rinsed the shampoo out, my hair felt very coarse, and it was still clumping together and knotting.

I had to condition twice (I use Happy Happy Joy Joy) because it felt like the conditioner was just sitting on top of my hair and not doing anything. I really worked it in and let it sit three minutes the second time before rinsing and that seemed to help, but it was still feeling unconditioned.

The tub was a disaster. I highly suggest going out to the dollar store and purchasing a cheap shower curtain you won't care about, because the bottom three inches of my curtain were black-green from the dye. It left a ring around the tub, as well as somehow managing to get up the tub wall. I had to bleach and scrub the tub and replace my mom's loofah, my shower curtain, and a washcloth because they were very badly stained. No amount of cleaning made them better.

I had to actually get back in the shower and condition my hair AGAIN because I discovered, upon trying to brush it, that it was a huge tangled mess in the back. I almost broke my hairbrush attempting to gently work through it. After the third condition, my mom sat me down and we had to spend about 25 minutes carefully working the brush through my hair to get all the knots out. We also discovered that there were still little bits of grit on my scalp.

The color IS nice, but not much different from what I had. I was a light auburn, and am now a full ginger, with more blonde than brown highlights, and that's a week after we dyed it. I could've achieved that with chemical dye and less hassle. Overall, the process just isn't worth it to me. With my hair length, the price is the same for two boxes of dye at the store versus the one brick, and with my wonderful LUSH shampoo, conditioner, and hair care products like R&B and Shine So Bright, I don't have a problem keeping my hair very healthy while using chemical dyes. I hope it works better for others.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

So i've always wanted dark red hair, and naturally i'm a dark, deep brunette. People have called my hair black mistakenly. I've never dyed it chemically before, and I was really not wanting to damage it because it's pretty healthy and long. I heard about the henna and decided to give it a try.

Yeah, the application was super messy. It was fun though, I really liked the fact that I could mix in other natural ingredients with the henna to improve the color. I added a whole lemon, some paprika, and cinnamon to the mixture. I wasn't bothered by the smell at all, I really liked it actually. It needed more water than I was expecting to be the right consistency. I broke the whole block up into chunks (my hair is medium thickness but pretty long) and grated some of it, but it would have taken waaaay too long to grate the whole thing so I gave up. I had a friend help me put it in my hair, which was ridiculous and fun, cause I looked like a swamp monster. She cling-wrapped my head and I slept overnight in it. It was really heavy on my head, but it didn't bother me much since I was just going to sleep. The cocoa butter will start to leak out of the cling wrap as it melts, so make sure you have multiple towels or an old pillow that you don't care about because my pillow got thoroughly stained green while I was sleeping.

I woke up at about 5 am because the cling wrap was a little tight and my head was uncomfortable, and I was really anxious to see how it turned out. I had left it in for seven hours so I figured that was plenty. I rinsed it out, which wasn't as hard as I was expecting based on some of the reviews, and I could immediately tell that it was lighter even in the shower. When I dried it, it was a deep, rich auburn, with definite red undertones, but it was a very subtle change. My hair is soooo soft and shiny. I couldn't stop feeling it. People say that it won't lighten your hair, but mine is definitely a bit lighter.

It's been three days now, and the color has actually gotten MORE red. I've gotten compliments from many people and they've asked if i've dyed my hair, so even on really dark brown hair it makes a difference. It shines in the sun and has such a pretty red glow to it. In the sun it is pretty noticeable. The herbal smell has lingered in my hair, which I don't mind, but when it's wet it does have a kind of weird, faint, wet dog-like smell that isn't particularly appealing. So I hope that goes away. But other than that, it's awesome. I have recommended it to everyone who chemically dyes their hair regularly, like my mom and sisters. It's a long, messy process but it was SO worth it. My hair is so healthy and shiny looking, and the color is beautiful.

I definitely plan on buying it again as soon as it starts to fade!!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I love this stuff! I tried bleaching and dying my hair with at-home box dyes and ended up with uneven color (zebra stripes in the back!), white-blonde streaks that looked awful with my almost black hair, and blue-ish ends from bleaching over previously indigo'd hair (NEVER BLEACH OVER INDIGO). As if horrible color wasn't enough, all the chemicals completely destroyed my once lush, soft hair.
So I picked up Caca Rouge and Caca Brun to try and return my hair to its natural color (dark reddish brown) and condition.
I used Rouge first to replace the red pigments I had bleached out and now I'm not even sure if I want to use the Brun on top! The white-blonde streaks turned into a beautiful copper color and warmed up my hair's tone.
I had to use all 6 blocks for my thick, bra strap length hair. Grated, mixed with boiling water to a yogurt consistency, left on for 2-3 hours and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed, no shampoo or conditioner. I'm paranoid about products interfering with the henna processing. My hair felt pretty crunchy afterwards but once it dried it was so so so soft (albeit a little greasy), and it feels a lot thicker.
Yes, the whole process is pretty messy, but that's what makes it fun. I've never had any problems with henna staining bathtubs, floors, or skin, I just wipe up the henna with a damp paper towel as it drips. I also actually like the smell of Caca Rouge.
Bottom line: I was going to chop off my hair and start over, but Lush's henna restored the condition and I can't wait to use it again.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I previously had my hair black, bleached briefly, dyed black again, tried 4 boxes of red dye in 3 months on my still black hair, had 2 sessions of red hair dye at the salon (my hair was in pretty bad shape and my natural light brown hair was growing out so I had 2 inch bright red roots and the rest black/red hair- weird ombre combo). THEN I decided to try henna from lush- what I should have done from the start.
This product healed my hair! It has never felt stronger or softer or looked glossier. It helped create a more even look and didn't make my roots stick out, instead they fade in with the rest and I get many compliments on it!
It was a long, messy application and for 3 days my hair smelled like wet leaves you rake in the fall BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT.
I have never been happier with color results. It is a deal, I bought one block and got two applications out of it (I have shoulder length thin hair, but a lot of it). It is safe and nourishes your hair. It lasts a long time (I waited 6-7 weeks before reapplying) and grows out gradually- no obvious roots or lines.
My hair still isn't as red as I would like it, but I was starting with black hair. I saw a huge difference though in the darker color of red the second time (color intensifies after multiple applications).
It especially looks beautiful in the sun!
Also, give it a couple days the color starts to set in more.
Definitley do a strand test before so you now what to expect and freak out that the mixture is green :)
I kept it in overnight for about 8 hours just to be safe but I don't think that's necessary.

Whats great about Caca Rouge is how natural it looks! It doesn't shout "HEY LOOK AT ME!" Like a lot of reds do, but it doesn't go unnoticed either. Besides the color, I noticed my hair strands are a bit stronger. I have very fine dark brown hair that snaps like "that" this products gives me a little extra streghth. It is messy and time consuming at first but this is now my 5th time using it and it is getting easier and quicker. My advice is to check the date it was made before you buy it. I've noticed older ones have a bit darker red and freshly made ones are brighter (both nice though.)

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

Cocoa butter makes this henna better. The cocoa butter helps bind and smooth the messy mixture, making it easier to coat the hair with the grainy henna. It also gives the hair a deep moisturizing treatment, which seems to buffer any damage that might be caused by henna infiltrating the cuticle. I have used powder hennas in the past, then semi permanent/ less toxic hair products. My objective has been to maintain a color close to my natural dark brown, with warmth, while covering my premature (<10%) grays. Planning to try to conceive, I chose to hold off on dye for a few months, then decided to try henna again after seeing how much gray grew out! After using one box of powdered henna, I remembered how insanely messy henna dying can be and swore It off. Thankfully, I found the caca products from lush and gave it a try. The process is still messy, but if you approach it methodically and unhurriedly, it an be reasonable. Add step zero to your instructions: damage control! Have on hand a plastic bag, rags or paper towels, cotton balls, hair clips, a toothbrush for hair line. I wear a black cami and undies or tights and excessively lather up any exposed skin with lotion or yogurt. I have found that coarsely chopping one square and heating in 0.5 c water makes a workable slurry, and more boiler water can be added if needed. I have naturally curly shoulder length coarse dry hair. I funnel the mix into an old mustard bottle, and aim for the roots, brush thru and add to the length as needed. As long as the mix is wet enough and warm enough, it will mostly stick; if too dry, the herb will just flake off everywhere. Once all the henna is in, I wipe any off my skin, cap with a breathable silky hair cap, clean up the bathroom, shower, and let sit 4 hours. I have found that using conditioner to remove the henna works better for me. One time I washed, and experienced dry hair and breakage, so now I just condition till water runs clean and hair feels clean, and wash a day later. I wash all the reusables--cap, rags, old black clothes, elbow length dish gloves, canvas bag to keep it all in, separately with an extra wash cycle, and keep all the gear together so its not a hassle to find. My grays are red gold and my hair gets a nice touch of warmth without dramatic color change--it is really pretty dark, and I don't get the dull flat, even darker effect of the supermarket semi permanent dyes. I just bought some caca brun and plan to alternate with the rouge once monthly. The smell is lemon and rose, natural and nice. Hope this helps.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I was super nervous to try this. I've never dyed my hair, as I'm a natural redhead and didn't want to screw up my color permanently. However, in recent years, my hair has faded from gorgeous Merida-esque flame orange-red to a more subtle dark copper auburn (see before picture). I had a friend who used henna on her naturally brown hair, and the effect was similar to a copper penny with a maroon undertone. I finally decided to take the leap with an attitude of "hey, what's the worst that could happen?"

I was still nervous a bit when I went to LUSH. The salesgirl was SUPER helpful (one of them was a henna fiend and told me to go ahead and use the whole block, as why not "go big or go home").

When I got home, I decided to read all the reviews (as I figured I might as well get some idea of what to expect), which ranged from praising the product to claiming that it didn't do anything. The worst that anyone seemed to get was an orange color, and since I'm orange at my base color, I decided that I might as well go ahead and try it.

I grated the block with a knife at first, but after my boyfriend told me I was going to slice my fingers off, I switched to a metal grater. I used a stainless steel bowl to collect the henna dust. I ended up grating about a fourth of the block for my first attempt at henna, and then I'd use more if I liked the effect. Then, I used my tea water boiler to boil some water (approx. 208 degrees Fahrenheit), and I added enough to get henna paste that was about the consistency of cookie dough. I made it thicker than recommended after reading accounts of people having henna dripping down their faces. No thanks, so I made it thick.

One tip: Apply it in the area of your home with the biggest accessible sink. Some people might find that's the bathroom, but I used my kitchen instead. That way, most of the mess dripped into the sink (easily fixable), as opposed to towels, tile, walls, etc. I didn't think the process was that overwhelmingly messy, but I'm a bit used to messy projects and I did make my stuff thicker than usual, so take that with a grain of salt. Also, a lot of people complain about the smell...I didn't find it offensive (although my boyfriend likes the henna smell as compared to the henna + herbs smell of tonight), but I work in a tea store, so I'm used to interesting-smelling herbs.

After I finished slathering my head with henna mud, I wrapped my head in a saran wrap turban (definitely my best look EVER), and sat around watching Courage the Cowardly Dog for six hours. Overall, super painless. Then I rinsed the henna out of my hair.

As for the rinsing: yes, it is a bit messy. However, it's not really that much worse than going to the beach and getting sand out of your hair...except there's a pigment component. Be sure to clean your shower. I stayed in the shower until the water ran clean, and then dried my hair and went to bed.

In the morning, my boyfriend and I took stock of the change. My hair was already red, but there was an added depth to it. It was like it was backlit with fire. Then, I stood in front of the window to see what sun did to it. WOW! It looked like my head was on fire! I hadn't had a color like that since I was tiny.

Right now, I'm sitting with my head in the saran wrap turban again. I loved the color so much that I'm letting it sit in my hair for even longer today. I also added a bit of turmeric and paprika to the henna to bring out the red and gold in my color. It's getting to the point now where I even find the process strangely relaxing.

          Great product, LUSH!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

My hair is naturally strawberry blonde that's dulled and darkened out as I've aged. I was super nervous to try this out but the strand test was promising. I only had the courage to leave it in for 15 minutes before I washed it out with about half a bottle of very cheap conditioner. And . . . it was orange. Super orange. Like fluorescent blindingly orange. I spent the next two days running through scenarios of how to tell people that I had messed up my hair in a way that was notoriously difficult to fix. But I never needed any of those defensive speeches. By the time I had to go back to work and leave the apartment it had toned down. It was subtle. Natural. Just the hint of brightness and shine that I'd been wanting. So if you immediately hate your results try not to freak out just yet. Henna takes time to oxidize and will change color after the first few days. Good luck!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I had to stop using traditional red hair dyes because they horribly dried out my hair and I felt like they were making my hair fall out a bit more. I greatly miss the vivid red colors I used to experiment with though. I didn't expect anything dramatic, but this definitely did not come out as red as I was hoping.

I have medium brown long hair which is fairly thick. My hair is also still growing out from many different red dye jobs so I have a subtle color shift of a good two inches at my roots. I mention this because the dye took to my hair differently based on previous color exposure.

Yes this was a very messy process for me. If I were to do it again I would use an old shower curtain or newspapers or something to cover my bathroom floor, because I'm still finding henna in weird places. I broke it up into small pieces just to make it easier, and used my double boiler. It was very difficult to get the henna into my hair, after about an hour it was finally all in (I used the whole block). I wrapped my head in seran and then put a shower cap over that. I did this all right before bed and then slept on it for about 8-9 hours.

Washing it out was tedious, a couple of shampoos and a couple of conditionings. I personally loved the smell, which lingered for several days and reactivated with my next shower. I was immediately very disappointed because I blow dried my hair and saw no difference at all. It wasn't until several days later that my friend noticed that my hair looked lighter. And indeed there was some new warmth in my hair. A red warmth, and subtle, but a small change. The area around my roots is less warm, and even more subtle. I may do this again. My hair was nicely conditioned, and come summer when the sun isn't trapped by the long bitter New England winter, I imagine the reddness will be even more brighter and noticeable. I really like not using nasty chemicals on my hair. And this time I will focus the henna more to the roots of my hair.

I had been dying my hair for more than 15 years to chase away greys, or just to pump up my naturally mousy brown hair. This always left my hair feeling like straw, and made it very fragile. I also never liked the idea of putting those chemicals on my scalp!
Once I tried Lush's caca rouge I was absolutely hooked!
Yeah, it's messy. Just keep some towels or newspapers around, wear old clothes while applying, it's really worth the mess. Trust me!
I use it every 6 weeks or so to cover the ever growing number of grey roots, as well as condition and brighten up my hair. I use a flat iron on my hair so it does take a fair amount of heat abuse but with the regular henna color refreshes (and I swear by Lush's R&B leave-in conditioner) I'm always getting complements on my hair!
On my medium brown hair the resulting color is dark auburn / burgundy with plenty of shine. The greys shine in the sun with ginger fire. It's really lovely.

I had higher hopes for this product. I have dark brown, thick, curly hair, and the color didn't really take. At most, I got a reddish sheen to my hair. I've had other henna products that have worked better.

However, the henna treatment was very good for my hair. It's super soft and silky afterwards.

Just a note for those with very thick hair, mine is only to my shoulder blades and it took the whole block (barely) and three hours to apply it. Make sure you leave lots of time for this!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I've been using for over three years now. All of my "box color" has grown out and I'm very happy with it. I have alot of gray at the crown and was having to dye my hair constantly. It was breaking all the time and felt terrible. Even though the henna is more work, the results are worth it. It stains gray hair differently, much lighter and brighter, but I think it looks cool. You couldn't have highlights done that look like it. Every strand takes on it's own color and it's brilliant in the sun. I have noticed that something seems different for the last year or so. I haven't had to leave it on nearly as long, perhaps they changed the ingredients?
For me, the only way to apply is with a chip brush ( under $1 at home depot)and I use steeped dark tea instead of water. You do need to let it sit for awhile in the liquid and stir often to keep it smooth. Keep some extra hot tea on hand, you might need to add a bit at the end if you run into clumps at the bottom of the bowl. But the chip brush works great and you can reuse for ages. I usually only do the roots for about 4 cycles, and then I do the whole head again.
I'm curious if anyone has had any luck with mixing some in a bottle/conditioner and using it as a Boost between colorings? I'd like to try it in the shower and see if it helps keep new growth a bit covered but I havent wanted to waste any to test it. And I'm not sure if the henna is stable after it is mixed with something else...

I'm a Lush girl for life!

I've always been a cosmetics junkie and I happened to walk into the opening of the Lush store on Lincoln Road. I so happened to run into this product and asked the guide questions and went home and did my own research about this particular product. The reviews were great, so I was convinced!

First off, Yes! It is messy, but I didn't mind. It was fun!

Second, Yes! It is time consuming (3-6 hrs) but I just hung around the house and did some chores.

Lastly, Washing it off felt very grainy but afterwards WOW! my hair was so soft and smooth. Not to mention, the color was ah-mazing!

I've attached a picture to show the results. Please note, I have dyed my hair previously with red hair dye (which are filled with chemicals!Yuck!) and my color started to fade to brown, so I found this alternative and I'm in love!

P.S. It does look like "caca" in your hair :)

              Go buy it!!!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:

I really like the end result of my henna hair dye with this product, it's gonna be my new go to hair color option.

I have lots of deep brown hair, closest to espresso, that is thick and curly!

Though it does take a LONG time to sit and process (at least 6hrs for me) it's part of the reason why i like it. I had the problem with chemical dyes that it took so long to coat my hair that the '40min' process time completed on my roots just as i was finishing getting the dye on my ends. It usually eneded up with my roots bright, fun and vibrant and my ends looked practically unchanged.

The long process time let me see some color picked up through out my entire length. I think i may double my process time next time I do an application and let it sit for 12hours.

As other reviewers statd, don't expect your hair to end up lighter, henna is a vibrant stain on the hair, meaning your base color is just enlivened with some red. Also, if any of your hair was chemically lightened it will take the henna color a bit differently than the rest of the hair.

As for the smell others have mentioned, if you wrap your hair with the palstic wrap (which i reccomend) when you unwrap you do get a potent smell then. The product slightly fermants, i think, while it's wrapped. I am not sensative to smells, but if you are just proceed with caution.

              GRAB A FRIEND FOR THIS.
Having another person apply the product for you is the best option, it's messy and if someone else does it the whole thing just goes smoother.

Hello, I have dyed my hair with caca rouge 3 times and the last time was in November. I still have the henna on my hair and it faded just a little. My question is if i need to grow it out or can i do something so it fades completely? since then I've tried the caca brun but the color fades really quickly and leaves the roots and the caca rouge showing in about 2/3 weeks. Should I try the caca noir for a more lasting coverage or is that the same as caca rouge, it will never fade?

Henna does not fade in the same way that synthetic color does, and is basically the equivalent of a permanent die. Fading varies from person to person so we always recommend performing a strand test ahead of time to ensure you are happy with the results!

I want to add red lowlights to my hair, can I use foil to section off the hennaed hair? How much should I use for long hair (16-ish inches at the longest)? Has anyone tried this for lowlights? Sorry, so many questions. You can tell I don't dye my hair often.

You can use our hennas on colour-treated hair, but the results may vary. It's always a good idea to do a strand test before doing a full application, just to make sure the results are what you're looking for!

Color- dark brown hair will get a noticeable auburn tint to it (my natural color is espresso brown and i got some lovely red throughout) but it will most likely have to sit for at least 5-6hrs on your hair.

If you like to change your hair color often and plan on going back to chemical dyes at any point, henna may not be for you. It stains your hair and will remain in the hair until that portion of the strand is cut off. Most chem dyes have warnings against being used on hair that has undergone a henna treatment.

I call this color permanent, my hair has retained the majority of the color after about 3mo and I'm due for a root touch up and a color refresh on my whole head.

This will not slowly washout like a demi if that's what you're interested in.

I want to buy this product; but, I have a few questions first. My hair is dyed red with a commercial dye, and I'm just looking to maintain my color without exposing myself to chemicals every other month. So, about how much of the block should I use to 'refresh'? I would really like something that I could use for a few months, once a month. So, if this is not it do you have something else?

The amount that you'll need depends on how much hair you need to cover; if you're hoping to boost your existing colour, it sounds like you would need to do a full application. However, if you're looking to add some colour to your roots, you would only need to prepare a small amount for that purpose! Our hennas are the only hair colour that we currently offer, and since everyone's hair is different, we always recommend a strand test before doing the full application so you can preview the results and decide if the effect is right for you!

I know it is recommended that I do a strand test before henna-ing my whole head. I have never done anything to my hair before seeing as it is a unique shade of color. I have thick, long (to my waist), medium/dark brown hair. I have a few questions:
                - Do I have to buy a whole $25 henna block just to do a strand test?
                - With my hair length, would I need more than one whole block?
                - How does it fade (honestly)? Will roots become a problem? Will it fade back to my natural hair color completely?

If you are near a store, it's definitely worth it to ask for a sample as any store should be able to provide this depending on their stock! A full block of our hennas are plenty for most people, but if your hair is extremely thick it's possible that a bit more might be necessary. Since henna coats the hair like a varnish rather than an opaque coverage, it fades quite gradually, and most people see this effect after around 6 weeks. If your hair is dark brown, the effects will be quite gradual.

Unfortunately, black hair will only show very subtle colour results with the henna. To lighten hair that's quite dark, you'd need to use a chemical dye to remove pigment from the hair shaft. Because Les Cacas are 100% natural, they would not be able to achieve this on very dark or black hair.

The red Cacas, like Caca Rouge have very vibrant orange-red effects on gray hair. We recommend using Les Cacas on hair that has less than 40% gray only.

                  A:

Because henna coats the hair shaft (rather than lifting the cuticle and inserting chemical underneath, as chemical dyes do), an application of the henna can make it more difficult for chemical dye to be applied. It is possible that the henna may cause the other dye to react differently than you are accustomed to, so I would definitely recommend performing a strand test before applying the blue to your head. That way, you will know what kind of results to expect!

It really depends on your hair! Do a strand test to see what the results will be like! For the best results, I would recommend covering your hair (with cling wrap or another waterproof substance), and leaving it on for at least three hours. Some people also add things like lemon juice or paprika to brighten up the color. Make sure that you do your strand test exactly as you plan to do your whole head, to give you the most accurate preview possible!
