For aspiring redheads who want to stop traffic with unparalleled shine and color. That’s not too much to ask from a solid block of henna is it? Not if you make it like we do. Caca Rouge is the reddest of our henna dyes and it’s sure to get you noticed. We use the finest Persian henna; the leaves are dried and ground into a powder and mixed with conditioning cocoa butter, which forms the basis of our Cacas. Organic lemon juice helps to bring out the redness and gives hair shine and lustre. You’re left with stunning, shiny and healthy-looking hair.
Features
- Red is for passion: To bring out the flame-haired temptress lurking beneath dull locks.
- Red, Redder, Reddest: Lighter hair will be left fiery and darker hair will be left with an auburn glow.
- Shine and spice: Lemon juice and rosemary add shine and clove bud oil gives a sexy, spicy scent.

"So i've always wanted dark red hair, and naturally i'm a dark, deep brunette. People have called my hair black mistakenly. I've never dyed it chemically before, and I was really not wanting to damage it because it's pretty healthy and long. I heard about the henna and decided to give it a try.
Yeah, the application was super messy. It was fun though, I really liked the fact that I could mix in other natural ingredients with the henna to improve the color. I added a whole lemon, some paprika, and cinnamon to the mixture. I wasn't bothered by the smell at all, I really liked it actually. It needed more water than I was expecting to be the right consistency. I broke the whole block up into chunks (my hair is medium thickness but pretty long) and grated some of it, but it would have taken waaaay too long to grate the whole thing so I gave up. I had a friend help me put it in my hair, which was ridiculous and fun, cause I looked like a swamp monster. She cling-wrapped my head and I slept overnight in it. It was really heavy on my head, but it didn't bother me much since I was just going to sleep. The cocoa butter will start to leak out of the cling wrap as it melts, so make sure you have multiple towels or an old pillow that you don't care about because my pillow got thoroughly stained green while I was sleeping.
I woke up at about 5 am because the cling wrap was a little tight and my head was uncomfortable, and I was really anxious to see how it turned out. I had left it in for seven hours so I figured that was plenty. I rinsed it out, which wasn't as hard as I was expecting based on some of the reviews, and I could immediately tell that it was lighter even in the shower. When I dried it, it was a deep, rich auburn, with definite red undertones, but it was a very subtle change. My hair is soooo soft and shiny. I couldn't stop feeling it. People say that it won't lighten your hair, but mine is definitely a bit lighter.
It's been three days now, and the color has actually gotten MORE red. I've gotten compliments from many people and they've asked if i've dyed my hair, so even on really dark brown hair it makes a difference. It shines in the sun and has such a pretty red glow to it. In the sun it is pretty noticeable. The herbal smell has lingered in my hair, which I don't mind, but when it's wet it does have a kind of weird, faint, wet dog-like smell that isn't particularly appealing. So I hope that goes away. But other than that, it's awesome. I have recommended it to everyone who chemically dyes their hair regularly, like my mom and sisters. It's a long, messy process but it was SO worth it. My hair is so healthy and shiny looking, and the color is beautiful.
I definitely plan on buying it again as soon as it starts to fade!!

I have never used henna before, but absolutely adore LUSH products, so I thought I'd trade up and go with henna dye. I read all the reviews before attempting this and was a little worried it would be a lot of work. As it turns out, if you know what you're doing, it's not as difficult as people make it out to be.
First of all, if you want the dye to be smooth and consistent, use a cheese grater to shred the bar rather than just pouring boiling water over pieces. I have fairly short hair too, so I only needed to use 2 out of 6 of the pieces. When adding water, it doesn't need to be boiling, just hot. I used about 1/3 cups hot water per square. Once you pour the hot water over the shredded henna, mix it until completely blended, the mixture will be smooth and thick. Make sure you put on gloves and then just grab small globs of the dye and mix into hair. As long as you use small amounts at a time, it shouldn't be that messy. Once you're done, I would suggest covering your hair with saran wrap. I had very blonde hair before, so I left the mixture on my hair for 6 hours (if you have darker hair, you may only need to leave it on half that amount of time). It may seem like a long time, but if you have chores to do around the house or a couple of movies you've been wanting to watch, it's not that bad. When time is up, just rinse it our like you would any other dye. It will run out of your hair like slimy mud and may take a while to completely rinse out. I would suggest shampooing your hair at least twice to get it all out. The smell of the dye can be a bit overwhelming, but if you have a strong shampoo, it won't be so bad. When everything was rinsed out of my hair, it smelled kind of like a ginger tea.
Everything I said may seem like a lot of work, but it's really not that difficult. My end result (since my hair was so blonde before hand) was a very vibrant, almost copper, red. Well worth all the work that went into it. When everything was done, my hair felt a lot healthier too. I would definitely recommend this to someone who want the bright color, but without the damage that comes with traditional dyes

I am a natural strawberry red/blonde color with long thick hair.. In past few months too many people have said my hair was looking kind of blonde these days so i decided I would try this product to see if it would enhance my color well... so far I have only done a strand test and below is a picture so you can see the difference in color....
I left the test color in for 4 hours and had added only hot water and cinnamon. I also put a small piece of plastic wrap around the test hair. Next time i will also add olive oil.
I am not sure i like the color of my hair... it is a bit too orange for my liking and I also found the color to be uneven through out the strand of hair even though i spent a long time rubbing it in.
I plan on doing the rest of my head in a week or so because I look silly with a strip of orange in the hair. I will not being leaving the henna in for so long next time as i was looking for a more subtle color change!
I didn't find this product to be messy as other people have said and I actually liked the smell of it! It smells like lush... what more do you expect?!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I had been toying with the idea of henna for years, but I never went through with it. I bought my bar after reading every single review on here, and decided to take the leap. First off: DO A TEST STRAND. Henna can be incredibly difficult to remove if you don't like the result. I just pulled some shed hair out of my hair brush and dyed that to see how it would turn out.
I started out with dark blonde/light brown hair. Fine, straight, prone to breakage. It's maybe 3-4 inches below my shoulders, and I used two blocks of the henna. I mixed up the henna with boiling water to about the consistency of greek yogurt. I put vaseline around my hair line and on my ears, then had my mother apply the henna for me. Admittedly, it was messy and kind of unpleasant. But it certainly didn't get all over my kitchen and stain every surface of my bathroom like some reviewers have complained about. Not sure what they did wrong, but I managed not to stain a single thing. I left it in for 3 hours, during which time I got an awful tension headache from the weight of the henna n my hair. Rinsing it out was quite a production, about 4 rounds of conditioner and 2 rounds of shampoo. I just used cheap drugstore shampoo and conditioner, because I knew I'd be using a lot.
My hair turned out lovely. Ygritte from Game of Thrones red. But if you're using it on very dark hair expecting a magical transformation, you're going to be disappointed. Henna doesn't lighten, it just applies a red color to the shade of hair you already have. All in all I'm very pleased. During the rinsing out process and my first shower after the henna I didn't lose a single hair. This is completely unheard of for me. The color and the added strength to my hair are WELL worth a few hours of my life, smelly hair mud, and a tension headache.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I tried Caca Rouge for the first time, and absolutely love it! Most home dyes end up looking purpley, but because the henna is plant based instead of chemical based, the color is just a brilliant coppery red. I was afraid it wouldn't show up well on my medium brown hair, but it turned into a lovely shade of bright auburn. I used two blocks because my hair is a bit long; I probably could have used one more, because the mixture just barely covered my hair. I also let it sit for 5 hours, and wrapped my head in plastic wrap. I used petroleum jelly around my hairline and ears, and it seems to have done its job. The process was quite messy and time consuming, but the end result is worth it.

Caca Rogue from the Brunette POV

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
This review is for any brunette considering the Caca Rouge henna bar. I have dark brown hair with natural highlights and wish to offer my experiences so that you can better decide whether or not this is the hair color for you. Here are the main things to consider:
1. Henna, regardless of brand, form, or application method will NEVER turn you into a bold, firey red head if you have brunette hair. It just ain't happening. If you want a very bright red color, you will have to have your hair bleached or otherwise chemically lightened, and then most likely use chemical dyes to achieve a strong red color. What you should expect from Caca Rouge is a subtle, but gorgeous, red tone that sparks in the light. As much as I hate to say it, blondes are going to have much greater effects with the henna than we ever will.
2. Yes, the process is messy. Yes, the bar has a strong herbal scent (my husband and I love it and think it smells like smokey tea and chocolate). Yes, if you are a brunette you will have to leave it in your hair for longer than a blonde might have to for the color to work in. Be prepared to put a little elbow-grease into this process and you will be rewarded. Have fun figuring out what process works best for you! My technique is to simply flip my hair over the tub and rub the henna mixture in as best I can with gloved hands. After a general coating, I will look in the mirror and seperate chunks of my hair to make sure the henna is everywhere, including down to the roots. You will also want to wrap your head in saran wrap and try to retain heat to help the red of the henna set.
3. Give it two or three applications before you decide whether or not it is worth it. Henna "builds" on itself and will become richer after several applications. At the time of writing this review I have used two applications of Caca Rouge over two months time. At first I was the only one who noticed the change, but as the weeks have gone by the color is getting noticed by my coworkers and friends. My hair stylist approved of the color and let me know that if she hadn't liked it, she wouldn't have let me leave her salon until she corrected it. ;)
4. When it comes to rinsing the henna out, I recommend patience and lots of conditioner. I rinse out more hair than I typically do in a normal shower, probably double the amount, so don't be worried if the same happens to you. Remember, you are grabbing, slathering, and manhandling your hair to get the henna on so you will take some hair with you in the process. Feel confident in the knowledge that you cannot burn your hair or scalp like you can with chemical dyes!
5. Make sure that you have decided to commit to the color that the henna will give you for at least a few months. Henna does not remove easily, and if you read the comments for any of the henna bricks you will see the bad experiences of people who tried to dye/lighten their henna'd hair. If you have dark hair and you don't like the Caca Rogue, you can "hide" it by applying Caca Brun or Noir to blend it back to your original, darker color. However, you cannot use henna and THEN decided you want to bleach/dye your hair! If you want to change hair color often, this is not for you.
I decided to try Lush's Caca line because I longed for red hair, but was hesitant to submit myself to the cost and chemicals of getting it done at the salon. I am so glad I gave it a shot! While Caca Rouge is more expensive than box dyes, I get two uses out of each bar for my shoulder-length hair and am willing to pay more for the all natural ingredients. The Caca Rouge leaves my hair feeling wonderfully soft, and I love catching a glimpse of my hair in a store window or mirror. If you are a brunette looking to add a beautiful red sheen to your hair, I highly recommend Caca Rouge.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
To begin with, my Asian hair is thick and relatively dark-colored. Not exactly black, but more like sun-ripened dark brown with some dark copper highlights. All natural virgin hair. It is semi-straight, but due to some layering of the hair gets close to a wavy texture. This may or may not be relevant, but I have NC35 skin (that is my foundation shade according to MAC). So about a medium with more warm undertones than cool. I hope this helps those of you with darker hair who are trying to decide whether or not to use this rouge henna!
First, the process of grating the henna blocks. I have long hair. If I half it in the back and pull the sides over my shoulders, my hair reaches below my breasts and about an 1 1/2 to 2 inches above the very top of my bellybutton. I used 4 blocks and that amount was good. Grating the blocks did take some time but the grated pieces (basically powder) melted much easier over the stovetop. I used a glass bowl to store the henna and to heat it up on.
Second, the process of distributing the henna on my hair. I was lucky that my older sister was willing to help me slather the henna on my ends, roots, and everything in between because at this point the henna was smelling seriously foul. I powered through it though, and lowered my head over the bathtub (I was kneeling) while my sister sat on a chair behind me and scooped handfuls of melted henna and just kind of rubbed it into my hair like it was shampoo or something (minus the scrubbing). I wasn't particularly picky and I didn't section off my hair and paint each small 3 inch interval sections of hair, working my way from the back to the front. My sister wasn't patient enough for that :) By the way, I didn't use Ultrabalm or another salve like that around my hairline and ears. I wasn't picky about that either x) The staining wasn't obvious, if there even was any. My sister didn't really worry about working it into my roots so I guess if you want to act more like you care about the result than I did, you should use Vaseline :)
Third, the process of using cling wrap and leaving the henna to age. Again, I wasn't picky about the cling wrap. Together, my sister and I just covered my head with a decent amount of cling wrap. Instead of worrying about the tightness of the wrapping (tighter = more intense red), we concentrated on making sure no henna would drip out of any crevices of the plastic wrap! After that part was done, I just mulled about doing my normal thing. My head felt heavy though, kind of like when I wrap a towel around my wet hair in a turban-style, and kind of like i was an alien. I didn't sleep with my hair coated in henna + cling wrap. I left it in for about 7-8 hours, I believe. I did the process in the morning and then washed my hair in the evening.
Fourth, the process of washing out the ridiculous dried henna. There were chunks, tangles, gritty sand-like particles everywhere, and all in all a giant mass of hair fashioned like one of those old beehive hairstyles (like Marge from the Simpsons). Finally, 3 shampoos and 2 conditioners later, I emerged from the shower with, thankfully, soft hair and sore biceps and triceps.
The results were: Soft hair with a glossy red sheen. On some particular strands of hair, the hair was an orangey red that was gorgeous. No indication of brown at all. Those sections of hair (1 to 3 cm) that were a natural orangery red had a coppery glint to it. Absolutely delicious (if that adjective can be applied to hair). I believe those sections were where my sister applied more liberally on accident. A happy accident! The majority of my hair had a definite reddish glow. Like a glaze. Don't get me wrong, I didn't suddenly become the 1st ginger Asian known to mankind, but my brown hair was encoated in a shiny but subtle orangey-red glaze/glow that even reflected in the dim bathroom lighting. Pieces of slightly more visible pumpkin auburn added dimension to my once dark brown hair. Quite gorgeous.
As for the contrast or complementing of my skin tone (NC35 and Asian, as stated above), I don't think the orangey red glow made me look like a queasy fireball or a sickly mustard carrot. The rouge henna actually enhanced what red undertones were hiding in my hair before and helped coax it out. Definitely flattering.
I like the rouge henna because it made my hair somewhat unique. On nice sunny days when I'm out, the red sparkle in my hair is very eye-catching. The best part is that instead of having that awful frizzy chemically red that many, many Asians have a habit of acquiring, I have a beautifully rounded red that twinkles in sunlight or when it catches the light in that perfect way, and I can tell others that it's NATURAL (they don't have to know whether I'm talking about the color in my hair or the actual source of the color itself)!
SO MANY people comment on my hair. ALWAYS positive. Not to sound conceited, really, but wherever I go there are usually guys who flirt with me. Yeah, that sounded really conceited :( My POINT that I'm trying to make is that I know some of the attention is due to the fact to my hair looks naturally more three-dimensional, silky, and captivating. Most guys love material and physical things. Hair is no exception. The package of LUSH henna includes looking great and feeling great. I can tell people that my hair color including the reddish highlights are natural and they'll think absolutely nothing of it. Sure, they'll drool a little in jealousy, but they never suspect I'm not being truthful because that's how natural the henna looks and is.
Go for it! Try out this hair color. It's subtle but enhancing, a definite treat for dull hair that doesn't include chemicals, permanent damage (or any damage for that matter), and displeased parents or negative comments. After a year, my hair still has a slight red undertone, one that has gradually lessened as time went one, but one that is still something subtle, pretty, and catches the sunlight. If I go back to the States soon, I'll be sure to do this again.
By the way, as for the differences between the varying shades of henna that LUSH offers, this is what I have merely observed:
Caca Noir: darkens hair. can create a warmer or cooler base depending on if you use cling wrap or not
Caca Brun: may darken hair or lighten hair, depending on its natural shade. nevertheless, brun adds more dimension by bringing out different tones in your hair to complement your individual.
Caca Marron: has more of an auburn or wine effect when compared to Caca Rouge. Think of Marron as a burgundy-red while Rouge is a orange-red.
Caca Rouge: has more of an orangey-red or tomato-red effect when compared to Caca Marron. Caca Marron is more subtle on darker hair and Rouge may be slightly more vibrant in comparison.
Hopefully you'll have better luck after reading this insanely long review that took me an hour to write :)

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
If you're looking for a dramatic change in your hair color than you should definetly not use this product. This is a natural product, not a poisoness dye that destroys the core of your hair. To me henna is more of a hair mask. It moisturizes and gives shine. It might give some sort of highlights. I have natural dark brown hair and the only one that was obvious on my hair was the black henna...none of the other colors had any major influence. The caca rouge mama gave me redish highlights and made my hair heavier, healthier looking as you can see in the pictures I attached to my review. I would totally recommend it! You should also know, in order to not be messy you should do this above your bathtub and use a hair wrap ;)

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I have been using this product for over a year now and I love it. I am a natural strawberry blond but as I have gotten older my hair kind of faded to what I call "blah blond". I asked my FB friends if anyone could recommend a hair dye product. To my surprise a co worker of mine said I should use Caca Rough from Lush, that she had been using it for years. I was surprised because I had always thought she was a natural redhead and I had secretly envied her hair. So I did my research into henna hair dye. I love the fact that it doesn't use the chemicals that are so very damaging to hair. I have very long hair, its now down to the back of my knees so I am always weary of anything that might damage it. I finally decided to go for it and after some trial and error regarding the amount of product to use (2 whole blocks to do my whole head) and how best to apply (its a two person job) and how to rinse it out (takes an hour and half a bottle of shampoo) I have the process down to a fine if messy art. The color is amazing and so natural looking that like my co worker people now believe I am a natural redhead. It has stunning dimensions of color. Inside it looks like a soft auburn color and in the sunlight it is a blazing glowing red. It lasts a long time as well. In fact, the color stays in so well that I only do my whole head every 3 times I dye it. The other 2 times in between whole hair dying, I use 3/4 of a block just to touch up the roots. I have to do that every 6 to 8 weeks. I can't imagine ever going back to the "blah blond".

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I love love love this henna! It looks super natural, and my hair feels great for days after using it. It also last ages! I was told to do my entire head, every time I touched up, but I found that that is not at all necessary.
Also, I know I am supposed to use several pieces each time, but I have found that if I'm not using as much, I can just leave it on longer, and get the same effect. If I leave one piece on for twelve hours, I get the same color as if I had left three on for three hours.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
As there are a dozen or more reviews with highly detailed (and MOST appreciated) instructions, I will not leave a long list of them. I will say that I did not add anything to the product at all.
The first time I used Caca Rouge it was on top of a mostly faided out salon dye job that cost me twice as much and lasted 1/4 as long. I have naturally blond hair, but red hair runds in my family so I thought I would try it. I am trying to stay away from chemicals in as many things as I can due to a medical condition and LOTS of medications. So LUSH products are perfect!
It is a messy job, and I let it sit for 6 hours the first time, though now that I have done it a few times I only have to leave it for about 3 hours. Watch a Disney movie, I had fun watching Brave while dying my hair the same color as Merida's! Use a dye brush and a shower cap and towel over the saran wrap. It also helps to put conditioner in first, before shampooing to help rinse the grit out. Once it is rinsed, and dried my hair feels spectacular! It is soft and bouncy and feels stronger than before. The color, you ask? Welllll...FAN-FREAKIN-AMAZE-TASTIC! I have had natural redheads ask me if this was my natural color. It is a gingery, coppery, wonderful, vibrant, step in the sun and my head's on fire red!
Reality checks:
Don't use this expecting the same results if you are starting out with drak brown/black hair, it is an amazing product, but it is not a chemical bleach or lightener.
Don't use this if you are not sure you want to be a red head, as there isn't really any going back after henna, you can't bleach it out.
Don't use this on your dog (no, I didn't try, just makng sure you were paying attention)
All in all, I love this product and will be a devout junkie...err...customer..for a long time! Thanks LUSH!
ps. Sorry about the oxygen tubing in the after shot, just wish me luck on my lung transplant!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I can not properly express how incredibly happy I am with this hair coloring product. I have never colored my hair because I don't like the maintenance of it, the expense, the chemicals and I don't like the "fake" look of colored hair.
This natural product is truly amazing. It provides a beautiful tone, sheen, brightness on top of my natural color(s). It looks extremely natural. I constantly get compliments on how it looks.
Many of my friends have asked what I use and want to get the same product.
I highly, highly, highly recommend this product.
Oh yeah, I have long hair - although fine - and I only need to use one of the little squares for my hair per time. No need to use the entire block!
(But, just so you realize, it did/does wash out in about 4 weeks-ish - obviously depending on how often you wash your hair.)

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I'm absolutely in love with my hair! I have long, pretty thick, naturally curly auburn hair. I was hesitant at first, but the lovely ladies of Lush in Victor, NY talked me into it (aren't they great at that?). They even offered to apply it for me, so I made an appointment for a day where I had no classes. The associate told me to leave it in for two hours, but I left it on for three just to be sure. When rinsing it out, try to get as much of the product out of your hair as you can before you shampoo, though it may take a while to work through your hair because the henna becomes clumpy and grainy as it dries in your hair. I got generous samples of Blousey shampoo and Happy Happy Joy Joy conditioner, so I used those after I rinsed out the henna. When my hair dried, I was so pleased with the vibrant yet natural color. My hair was left super soft, felt thicker, and I didn't have a bad hair day for a good couple weeks after, which is amazing since my hair is pretty unpredictable. It's been about a month since I got it done, and the color is still amazing, especially in the sun. I thought this would be a one-time thing, but I'll definitely do this again. I'm a little afraid to do it myself though!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I have used this three times now and I am in love. This has become the only hair dye I use. I like the smell and it leaves my hair super super shiny. My hair is dark brown-black that rusts in summer, so the color change isn't dramatic, but it does give my hair a reddish glow in sunlight that is nice. I use it primarily for the conditioning effect, to even out the color, and to cover up the few gray hairs I have prematurely started getting. I don't have to color as frequently as I did when I used box dyes which is rad and I have pretty much stopped using conditioner since my hair no longer seems to need it. It turns my grays into a lovely warm copper color that doesn't fade.
I like to use a cheese grater to break up the block so I don't have to spend a lot of time breaking up half melted chunks while mixing. I also add cinnamon and about 3-4 capfuls of apple cider vinegar. I use conditioner when washing it out and it helps get all the grit out completely and quickly. This dye takes way less time to washout then manic panic and box dyes and bleeds less on my towels and pillow cases, too.
It is more time consuming for me than it is messy. I wait for a day in which I am just kicking it at home and watch a movie/play video games/knit while I wait for it to develop for about 5-6 hours. A wee bit of a hassle, but worth it in my opinion.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
Ok, so as many have said this IS a little messy. But now you know that and can prepare! I just wrap my shoulders in an old towel and do this in the bathroom where everything can be wiped down.
I chop mine up into pieces, and toss in a little cinnamon and paprika, and pour boiling water over it. I put a small plate on top of the bowl and let it sit for a few min to soften. Then I mix it up and add more water until I like the constancy. The cool thing is that you can make it really thin for more of a treatment rather than a full blown dye. Thin it out more with some olive oil if you are going with the treatment route your hair will be awesome!
Now I have really REALLY thick hair so im sure it would be less messy if I didn't have so much to cover, but I pretty much just put on some gloves and go for it in sections starting at the roots. I like to rub on some shea butter around my hairline and on my ears beforehand too, to keep from dying my face... hehe.
Once everything is covered there are usually henna crumbs EVERYWHERE. So after I wrap my head with a plastic produce bag, yes you read that right they are PERFECT for this! I grab the vacuums and clean up the mostly dried crumb-particles, then use a damp cloth to clean up the rest. Stains aren't usually an issue for me.
After a rinse and repeat its all done and I have beautiful, soft, earthy smelling hair, and I love it!

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
First of all, don't do this alone. That's the best advice I can give you, right there. Even if you've been dying your own hair with chemical dyes for years or whatever, GET A FRIEND OR SOMEONE TO HELP YOU. You're going to need it, especially if it's your first time trying Henna. I also suggest using whatever room in your house has the biggest sink (for me, it's my kitchen). They tell you to lay down newspaper, and I personally suggest taking the paranoid approach and coating ANYTHING you don't want possibly stained with newspaper. We cleared off my entire counter and sink, and covered the floor and counter in newspaper. Also, if you aren't careful, the henna will stain whatever bowl you put it in. I recommend buying cheap bowls that you don't care about.
The package directions tell you to cut the brick into small chunks. I recommend crushing it, or shaving it. Cutting it up was a pain, but the brick is VERY crumbly, so crushing it is easier. It also makes mixing it easier. The directions also tell you to stir the henna and water until it looks about the consistency of brownie mix. GO THINNER. If it's that thick (or worse, thicker) it's very difficult to apply, and you'll already have enough of a trial applying it. Definitely make it thinner.
Application is... laborious. It's kind of expected, going in, but it's REALLY time-consuming. I suggest doing all of your roots first, section by section, and then going back to do the rest of your hair. I have breast-length hair, and doing it that way took 25-30 minutes to get my hair fully coated. I definitely suggest using a brush to apply it (available at any beauty store). The dye hardens as it dries, and it crumbles, so be prepared for that as well. It's very heavy, too, so if you aren't used to that, steel yourself. By the time I could wash it out, my neck was killing me.
The instructions say to leave it on for 1-2 hours, but the girl I talked to in the store suggested 3. Waiting is tedious if, like me, you're used to chemical dyes that only stay on for 25-30 minutes, or have never dyed your hair at all. The dye is also the texture and consistency of mud or clay, and- as I said- hardens as it dries and is heavy. Wrap your hair in saran wrap like the directions recommend, but I would also suggest putting a shower cap over top. I didn't have one, and spent all three hours trying not to rest my head on anything, in case the cling wrap wasn't fully covering my head. I didn't want to stain anything, and instead got a crick in my neck. Also, those crumbly bits I mentioned seem to escape no matter what you do, and get EVERYWHERE.
Rinsing the dye out is the real pain. Chemical dyes are easy because you simply rinse until the water is clear and then condition. With this, the water didn't really get tinted too terribly, so I had to rely on how my hair felt. Also, those dry crumbs refused to leave my hair, and my hair tangled as I tried to get all of them out. It took about 20 minutes just to rinse my hair of all the grit, and then another 15 of working my shampoo (I use Blousey) into my hair to really clean it. I have fine hair, and with Blousey I normally only need to condition every other day because my hair feels silky enough after the shampoo, but once I rinsed the shampoo out, my hair felt very coarse, and it was still clumping together and knotting.
I had to condition twice (I use Happy Happy Joy Joy) because it felt like the conditioner was just sitting on top of my hair and not doing anything. I really worked it in and let it sit three minutes the second time before rinsing and that seemed to help, but it was still feeling unconditioned.
The tub was a disaster. I highly suggest going out to the dollar store and purchasing a cheap shower curtain you won't care about, because the bottom three inches of my curtain were black-green from the dye. It left a ring around the tub, as well as somehow managing to get up the tub wall. I had to bleach and scrub the tub and replace my mom's loofah, my shower curtain, and a washcloth because they were very badly stained. No amount of cleaning made them better.
I had to actually get back in the shower and condition my hair AGAIN because I discovered, upon trying to brush it, that it was a huge tangled mess in the back. I almost broke my hairbrush attempting to gently work through it. After the third condition, my mom sat me down and we had to spend about 25 minutes carefully working the brush through my hair to get all the knots out. We also discovered that there were still little bits of grit on my scalp.
The color IS nice, but not much different from what I had. I was a light auburn, and am now a full ginger, with more blonde than brown highlights, and that's a week after we dyed it. I could've achieved that with chemical dye and less hassle. Overall, the process just isn't worth it to me. With my hair length, the price is the same for two boxes of dye at the store versus the one brick, and with my wonderful LUSH shampoo, conditioner, and hair care products like R&B and Shine So Bright, I don't have a problem keeping my hair very healthy while using chemical dyes. I hope it works better for others.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
So i've always wanted dark red hair, and naturally i'm a dark, deep brunette.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I love this stuff! I tried bleaching and dying my hair with at-home box dyes and ended up with uneven color (zebra stripes in the back!), white-blonde streaks that looked awful with my almost black hair, and blue-ish ends from bleaching over previously indigo'd hair (NEVER BLEACH OVER INDIGO). As if horrible color wasn't enough, all the chemicals completely destroyed my once lush, soft hair.
So I picked up Caca Rouge and Caca Brun to try and return my hair to its natural color (dark reddish brown) and condition.
I used Rouge first to replace the red pigments I had bleached out and now I'm not even sure if I want to use the Brun on top! The white-blonde streaks turned into a beautiful copper color and warmed up my hair's tone.
I had to use all 6 blocks for my thick, bra strap length hair. Grated, mixed with boiling water to a yogurt consistency, left on for 2-3 hours and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed, no shampoo or conditioner. I'm paranoid about products interfering with the henna processing. My hair felt pretty crunchy afterwards but once it dried it was so so so soft (albeit a little greasy), and it feels a lot thicker.
Yes, the whole process is pretty messy, but that's what makes it fun. I've never had any problems with henna staining bathtubs, floors, or skin, I just wipe up the henna with a damp paper towel as it drips. I also actually like the smell of Caca Rouge.
Bottom line: I was going to chop off my hair and start over, but Lush's henna restored the condition and I can't wait to use it again.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
I previously had my hair black, bleached briefly, dyed black again, tried 4 boxes of red dye in 3 months on my still black hair, had 2 sessions of red hair dye at the salon (my hair was in pretty bad shape and my natural light brown hair was growing out so I had 2 inch bright red roots and the rest black/red hair- weird ombre combo). THEN I decided to try henna from lush- what I should have done from the start.
This product healed my hair! It has never felt stronger or softer or looked glossier. It helped create a more even look and didn't make my roots stick out, instead they fade in with the rest and I get many compliments on it!
It was a long, messy application and for 3 days my hair smelled like wet leaves you rake in the fall BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT.
I have never been happier with color results. It is a deal, I bought one block and got two applications out of it (I have shoulder length thin hair, but a lot of it). It is safe and nourishes your hair. It lasts a long time (I waited 6-7 weeks before reapplying) and grows out gradually- no obvious roots or lines.
My hair still isn't as red as I would like it, but I was starting with black hair. I saw a huge difference though in the darker color of red the second time (color intensifies after multiple applications).
It especially looks beautiful in the sun!
Also, give it a couple days the color starts to set in more.
Definitley do a strand test before so you now what to expect and freak out that the mixture is green :)
I kept it in overnight for about 8 hours just to be safe but I don't think that's necessary.

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
Whats great about Caca Rouge is how natural it looks! It doesn't shout "HEY LOOK AT ME!" Like a lot of reds do, but it doesn't go unnoticed either. Besides the color, I noticed my hair strands are a bit stronger. I have very fine dark brown hair that snaps like "that" this products gives me a little extra streghth. It is messy and time consuming at first but this is now my 5th time using it and it is getting easier and quicker. My advice is to check the date it was made before you buy it. I've noticed older ones have a bit darker red and freshly made ones are brighter (both nice though.)

Better with butter

Comments about Caca Rouge Mama Hair Henna:
Cocoa butter makes this henna better. The cocoa butter helps bind and smooth the messy mixture, making it easier to coat the hair with the grainy henna. It also gives the hair a deep moisturizing treatment, which seems to buffer any damage that might be caused by henna infiltrating the cuticle. I have used powder hennas in the past, then semi permanent/ less toxic hair products. My objective has been to maintain a color close to my natural dark brown, with warmth, while covering my premature (<10%) grays. Planning to try to conceive, I chose to hold off on dye for a few months, then decided to try henna again after seeing how much gray grew out! After using one box of powdered henna, I remembered how insanely messy henna dying can be and swore It off. Thankfully, I found the caca products from lush and gave it a try. The process is still messy, but if you approach it methodically and unhurriedly, it an be reasonable. Add step zero to your instructions: damage control! Have on hand a plastic bag, rags or paper towels, cotton balls, hair clips, a toothbrush for hair line. I wear a black cami and undies or tights and excessively lather up any exposed skin with lotion or yogurt. I have found that coarsely chopping one square and heating in 0.5 c water makes a workable slurry, and more boiler water can be added if needed. I have naturally curly shoulder length coarse dry hair. I funnel the mix into an old mustard bottle, and aim for the roots, brush thru and add to the length as needed. As long as the mix is wet enough and warm enough, it will mostly stick; if too dry, the herb will just flake off everywhere. Once all the henna is in, I wipe any off my skin, cap with a breathable silky hair cap, clean up the bathroom, shower, and let sit 4 hours. I have found that using conditioner to remove the henna works better for me. One time I washed, and experienced dry hair and breakage, so now I just condition till water runs clean and hair feels clean, and wash a day later. I wash all the reusables--cap, rags, old black clothes, elbow length dish gloves, canvas bag to keep it all in, separately with an extra wash cycle, and keep all the gear together so its not a hassle to find. My grays are red gold and my hair gets a nice touch of warmth without dramatic color change--it is really pretty dark, and I don't get the dull flat, even darker effect of the supermarket semi permanent dyes. I just bought some caca brun and plan to alternate with the rouge once monthly. The smell is lemon and rose, natural and nice. Hope this helps.

Henna does not fade in the same way that synthetic color does, and is basically the equivalent of a permanent die. A:
Color- dark brown hair will get a noticeable auburn tint to it (my natural color is espresso brown and i got some lovely red throughout) but it will most likely have to sit for at least 5-6hrs on your hair.
If you like to change your hair color often and plan on going back to chemical dyes at any point, henna may not be for you. It stains your hair and will remain in the hair until that portion of the strand is cut off. Most chem dyes have warnings against being used on hair that has undergone a henna treatment.
I call this color permanent, my hair has retained the majority of the color after about 3mo and I'm due for a root touch up and a color refresh on my whole head.
This will not slowly washout like a demi if that's what you're interested in.Answered on 3/29/2013 by Kate from Rhode Island

My hair is dyed red with a commercial dye, and I'm just looking to maintain my color without exposing myself to chemicals every other month. So, about how much of the block should I use to 'refresh'? I would really like something that I could use for a few months, once a month. So, if this is not it do you have something else?Asked on 12/5/2012 by Tina from Greenville, ScKnow the answer? A:
The amount that you'll need depends on how much hair you need to cover; if you're hoping to boost your existing colour, it sounds like you would need to do a full application. However, if you're looking to add some colour to your roots, you would only need to prepare a small amount for that purpose! Our hennas are the only hair colour that we currently offer, and since everyone's hair is different, we always recommend a strand test before doing the full application so you can preview the results and decide if the effect is right for you!Answered on 3/8/2013 by Brandy from LUSH
Q:
I know it is recommended that I do a strand test before henna-ing my whole head. I have never done anything to my hair before seeing as it is a unique shade of color. I have thick, long (to my waist), medium/dark brown hair. I have a few questions:
- Do I have to buy a whole $25 henna block just to do a strand test?
- With my hair length, would I need more than one whole block?
- How does it fade (honestly)? Will roots become a problem? Will it fade back to my natural hair color completely?Asked on 11/12/2012 by RachelK24 from New YorkKnow the answer? Answer this question

If you are near a store, it's definitely worth it to ask for a sample as any store should be able to provide this depending on their stock! A full block of our hennas are plenty for most people, but if your hair is extremely thick it's possible that a bit more might be necessary. Since henna coats the hair like a varnish rather than an opaque coverage, it fades quite gradually, and most people see this effect after around 6 weeks. If your hair is dark brown, the effects will be quite gradual.Answered on 3/7/2013 by Brandy from LUSH

A:
Unfortunately, black hair will only show very subtle colour results with the henna. To lighten hair that's quite dark, you'd need to use a chemical dye to remove pigment from the hair shaft. Because Les Cacas are 100% natural, they would not be able to achieve this on very dark or black hair.Answered on 8/28/2012 by Megan from LUSH Direct
