I have never used henna before, but absolutely adore LUSH products, so I thought I'd trade up and go with henna dye. I read all the reviews before attempting this and was a little worried it would be a lot of work. As it turns out, if you know what you're doing, it's not as difficult as people make it out to be.
First of all, if you want the dye to be smooth and consistent, use a cheese grater to shred the bar rather than just pouring boiling water over pieces. I have fairly short hair too, so I only needed to use 2 out of 6 of the pieces. When adding water, it doesn't need to be boiling, just hot. I used about 1/3 cups hot water per square. Once you pour the hot water over the shredded henna, mix it until completely blended, the mixture will be smooth and thick. Make sure you put on gloves and then just grab small globs of the dye and mix into hair. As long as you use small amounts at a time, it shouldn't be that messy. Once you're done, I would suggest covering your hair with saran wrap. I had very blonde hair before, so I left the mixture on my hair for 6 hours (if you have darker hair, you may only need to leave it on half that amount of time). It may seem like a long time, but if you have chores to do around the house or a couple of movies you've been wanting to watch, it's not that bad. When time is up, just rinse it our like you would any other dye. It will run out of your hair like slimy mud and may take a while to completely rinse out. I would suggest shampooing your hair at least twice to get it all out. The smell of the dye can be a bit overwhelming, but if you have a strong shampoo, it won't be so bad. When everything was rinsed out of my hair, it smelled kind of like a ginger tea.
Everything I said may seem like a lot of work, but it's really not that difficult. My end result (since my hair was so blonde before hand) was a very vibrant, almost copper, red. Well worth all the work that went into it. When everything was done, my hair felt a lot healthier too. I would definitely recommend this to someone who want the bright color, but without the damage that comes with traditional dyes

I am a natural strawberry red/blonde color with long thick hair.. In past few months too many people have said my hair was looking kind of blonde these days so i decided I would try this product to see if it would enhance my color well... so far I have only done a strand test and below is a picture so you can see the difference in color....
I left the test color in for 4 hours and had added only hot water and cinnamon. I also put a small piece of plastic wrap around the test hair. Next time i will also add olive oil.
I am not sure i like the color of my hair... it is a bit too orange for my liking and I also found the color to be uneven through out the strand of hair even though i spent a long time rubbing it in.
I plan on doing the rest of my head in a week or so because I look silly with a strip of orange in the hair. I will not being leaving the henna in for so long next time as i was looking for a more subtle color change!
I didn't find this product to be messy as other people have said and I actually liked the smell of it! It smells like lush... what more do you expect?!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
This is by far my favorite product of all time. After about a year and a half of dying my hair red in the salon and spending ridiculous amounts of money every 3 weeks just to keep up with the colour.. I needed to find something else. I started reading into Henna and the pros and cons etc. And I went through literally all of the reviews on this site... and I went ahead and bought my block... and I am never looking back. My hair looks and feels amazing. It is so much healthier than it was before and my hair stylist is in complete awe with the colour (she strongly discouraged me from trying henna) and how healthy and easy to work with it is now. I get compliments all the time and I just feel completely awesome. I only have to use half a block for my hair which is below shoulder length and about medium thickness, but as I found out with my friend it is always better to mix more than to end up not having made enough. I find that it is easiest to mix up when it is chopped up into tiny pieces with a big knife. Dont bother grating it, it takes more time and effort for the exact same outcome with just using a knife.
It is a slight pain in the butt to actually apply however its not that hard and once you do it a ,couple times, it doesnt take too long. It can be messy, so wear old clothing (or as little as possible since skin is easier to just wipe clean) and make sure you do it on a cleanable surface.
Happy Hennaing!

Lay down a drop cloth and have at it. I cut a hole in a trash bag and put it on like a poncho so all I had to do when I was done with the application was to pull the bag up to my hair line and tie myself a plastic turban. I then tied a nice cozy hoody over the plastic turban and went about my evening. If you are blonde and want red, not orange, leave it on for 8 hours not 4. I have included pictures of my turban as well as before and after. Everyone love it, everyone thinks I'm a natural red head. Most rewarding hair dye experience ever. I hate to say anything is my "Favorite" LUSH product because I love them all, but the Henna Rouge is definitely a top 5.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I'm going to tell you the story of my love affair with Caca Rouge Mama. As I am writing this review, I have my henna mud mask doing it's magick on my head. This is the third time I've used it and it really is love!
I have long struggled to find that perfect red. That coppery, radiant, ginger red. I've tried every box of hair dye, been to the salon, even had a disaster which ended with my head looking like Raggedy Anne. *shudder* All of the dyes I've tried are either too purple or too brown or if I do find just the right shade (messed with a box of Strawberry Blonde dye that worked well), they fade so quickly! And don't get me started on the harsh chemical smell and the fact that my hair felt like straw every time I colored. They give you that tube of conditioner with the kit for a reason! They know it's gonna feel like garbage!
Then I met Caca Rouge Mama. I was a bit skeptical but a friend of mine had used red henna before and I loved her hair. Being a Lush junkie, I figured I'd spend the money on the brick of dye and try it. It was simple enough to prepare. I chopped up 3 squares (I had longer hair, now that it's only shoulder length, I only have to use 2) and added boiling water from my tea kettle a little bit at a time. Chop the dye up small but you don't have to grate it. It's made of cocoa butter, it'll melt. Stir well, adding just a bit of boiling water at a time until it melts into a smooth, batter-like consistency. Some say brownie batter, I go for cake batter, just a bit looser because as the cocoa butter cools, it will thicken a bit. I like it to still be gooshy when it sits on my head, not like thick mud. I can massage it around when my head is all wrapped up. Also, I wrap. Some other people don't. To each their own!
Ignore the folks who say it smells bad. It smells like Lush... like a bit of floral with a bit of earthiness. The scent is not over-powering and doesn't smell like noxious chemicals that are stripping and destroying your hair. It is however "messy". Imagine when you were a child, making mud pies in the yard... now imagine dumping that mud pie on your head and leaving it there for a minimum of 2 hours. The feeling is a bit odd and the dye gets on everything, but it's kinda fun too! I also don't put Vaseline or Ultrabalm on my hairline and you have to wipe off any that goes astray, but no matter how hard you try, there will be a bit of staining on your skin and scalp. I just try to get the wayward mud as quickly as possible and plan to vigorously exfoiliate my face in the shower.
I leave it on for 2 hours (might go for 3 hours this time... see how tired I get) But I've heard people say that they've left it on overnight. I like the fact that you can leave it on for as little as an hour for that kiss of color to your lighter hairs or as long as 24 for that deep, rich look. If you leave the box dye on too long, prepare for chemical burns and baldness! I like the idea that you can add wine or coffee or cinnamon to change the color saturation. I like the idea than when I rinse (and yes, it does feel like mud sliding down my back) that my hair is healthier than when I started without using an entire tube of super-concentrated conditioner.
Things you should know:
-It makes a mess but it's easy to clean up
-It makes your hair healthier and is better for the planet (No chemical pollution, air pollution, plastic bottle waste, etc.)
-It takes time, but it's nice to spend the day pampering myself
-It produces a natural, radiant color that doesn't fade like box dye (it does however grow out, leaving horrible roots, but reminds me of how bright red it was before!)
-It is -NOT- something that you can just dye over if you don't like it! You have to let it grow out! Many ladies forget about this

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I love the color, smells great, and has a feature that normal box dyes don't have: I can make up tiny batches every week if I want to keep my brows in perfect color. For me, the best way to prepare the color is this: Get tools required in the bathroom: a warmer, a wood utensil, water, laptop to play a movie to entertain you, gloves. 1. I melt the color in a plug-in warmer intended to melt fragranced wax. I add one cup water per block and use a wooden utensil to mix it. Google "plug-in fragrance warmer", lots of options. 2. I apply Vaseline around my hairline and brows. 3. I get in the tub, apply the melted dye to my scalp by feel. Your first time is a little different, but when re-applying, you want to focus on the roots. When you feel the warmth on your scalp, you know you got the roots. This stuff cools stiff on your hair no matter what so you just keep making new parts and applying a bit. I do my brows too. I go all cave woman in the bath with this and do it with my bare hands. That's a cool experience, and then there is no additional clean up. 3. I put a bag over my hair to hold it all in for a while. I'll stay in the tub reading or watching a movie on a laptop (set it up beforehand), and just wait for an hour. If you are worried about staining, then you can run the bath now and wash away the bits of dye on you and the tub and utensil. 4. In the final step, I remove the bag, I add the remainder of the dye to my entire hair, and then shower it all away. I don't find that I need to wait any time for the length of my hair to pick up the new henna color. In the shower, I'm cleaning the wooden spoon, the bits of dye on my shoulders, everything. No mess got outside the tub, and I don't have my tub stained or my hands stained either. Hope this helps. There's certainly a million ways to do this.

NOTE: Definitely recommend shredding or grating it before cooking, it helps ALOT.
I have very dark brown nearly black hair. If you have the same don't expect to come out of the shower feeling like jessica rabbit or julia roberts. For extremely dark hair you get a sexy maroonesque shade that is super hot under direct light. It's subtle but you know it's there. It smells terrible and gets everywhere but it is soooo worth it. I didn't even need conditioner because the henna is so restorative AND my split ends were magically repaired. Even if you don't achieve the color you're looking for the other properties of the henna make it a staple for people looking for healthy hair.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
Henna red is, imo, the most natural looking orangey-red you can get. It looks like red you were born with. But if you're considering henna, PLEASE understand that you CANNOT BLEACH IT OUT. You may be able to color something darker over it, but once it's there, it's there. You pretty much have to grow or cut it out.
I guess I must be in the extreme minority here, because I really noticed almost no smell at all from this product. My boyfriend and dog both HATE the smell of haircolor (like my dog will literally get up and leave the room, looking at me with extreme disdain), and neither one of them moved or mentioned anything.
You don't need to grate it. Just cut it into big chunks, it melts fine. You'll spend more time stirring, but the more time you give henna to develop over the double boiler, the less time it needs on your head. Don't use a metal bowl or utensil to stir it-- plastic only.
Definitely slap some vaseline around your hairline, and definitely use gloves. Have some saran wrap and a turban style head towel at the ready. Do yourself a favor and saran wrap your head after you apply. This stuff is drippy, and stains, and will be on your head for at least an hour. Yes, the color will be a bit redder, but... you're using henna. Don't you want red hair??
My hair is just a bit longer than chin length, so I just took big handfuls of the mud and started slapping it on and rubbing it around. If you have long hair, you probably want to get a friend to help with this. I used 3 bricks, and it was about enough, if I'd made it a little thinner I could probably have gotten away with 2.
After slapping on all of the mud, I wrapped my head in saran wrap, then wrapped a towel tightly on top of that. There's another good reason to do this- wrapping the henna will help keep it warm, which helps it process better, and it keeps it liquid, which helps it rinse out better.
My hair was a medium blond that I had dyed several times before. I ultimately want to use the caca Brun, but I'm going a couple of rounds with the Rouge first, because putting indigo dye on top of bleached or light blond hair will just make it turn green. Having the red in there first will keep it brown.
DO A STRAND TEST if you've never hennaed before. Just pull a handful of your hair out from your hairbrush, mix up a little blob of henna, and smush it all together in a saran wrap package for a few hours and see what comes out. Remember, if you don't like your results, YOU CAN'T BLEACH IT OUT.
Don't worry about it staining your sink/bathtub/walls/floors as long as you clean it up right away. Right after you wrap your head, bust out the 409 on your bathroom and it will be fine.
The length of time you keep it on your hair should be based on your strand test. It could be anywhere from 40 minutes to overnight. I generally go about 2 hours. Rinsing it out is easy if you don't let the henna dry out in your hair. A few hits of conditioner will help get any grainy bits out.
It is a lot of work, but the red you get from henna is just incomparable. Most box color or hairdresser color will end up with those purplish red tones, this gives you the same kind of red that you see adorable little ginger kids at the park running around with.
And one last time-- YOU CAN'T BLEACH THIS OUT! So be very sure before you start. Do the strand test!!!! If you think you might want to be Marilyn blonde in your future, please think really hard before using henna (or indigo).

If you order this be prepared to block out several hours or overnight, but it is absolutely worth it! If you keep it in your hair overnight protect your sleeping area because there will be leakage. After wrapping my hair in plastic wrap I put a shower cap on and loop a nice big towel around my neck. I put a plastic bag over my pillow and cover it with a thick towel. When I get up in the morning every thing is easy breezy to clean up. I came up with this system after a few trial & errors. I have the stained pillows to prove it! The result is a gorgeous red color. My hair is naturally dark red and this makes it look a deep fiery red. I love it. And I get sooooo many compliments on it.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I'm 24 and have been dying my hair red since I was 16. I've gone through just about every shade imagineable: ruby red, auburn, cardinal red, and, most recently, copper red.
I was using a chemical dye prior to the henna which simultaneously lightened my hair while it dyed it copper red. It was a fabulous product- I truly loved the color. However, since my hair grow about an inch a month, and I'm a mousey-brown brunette naturally, I have to dye my hair about every six weeks. (I also have to wash my hair daily since I have a bit of an oily scalp, which contributes to washing out the dye quickly.) Treating my hair with dye every six weeks was wreaking havoc on my hair, so I decided to try henna.
I thought I'd go with Lush's henna because, well... If you've ever done any research into dying your hair with "natural" henna- you know, the stuff they use on hands?- it can be a bit overwhelming. I figured I'd try something someone else had already figured out and marketed to those of us who are beginners.
It worked fine over my chemically treated hair. My only sadness comes from the fact that my natural roots are starting to grow in and the henna does not dye them the same color as the ends. (Obviously, since the rest of my hair is technically lightened!)
I love the color. Everyone thinks I'm a natural redhead, which is a compliment I was rarely granted when I used chemical dyes to treat my hair!
Tips:
- Get a pair of latex/vinyl gloves to use with this stuff- it WILL dye your hands orange!
- Microwave about 2-3 cups of water IN A GLASS BOWL for 8 minutes to get it VERY hot. Break up the henna as much as you can. Throw the bits you can't break up into the water and let them soak a bit. Eventually they will heat up so much that you can mush them together. (Try not to use any metal utensils!)
- Starting off with less water is better than using too much water. (I haven't tried adding lemon juice, chamomile, red wine, or turmeric to my mixture, but I've heard that that can enhance the color.)
- Using a dye application brush is very helpful, especially along the hairline. Just be sure to make your henna the right consistency!
- Make sure you have either an old towel or newspaper on the floor where you're working. This stuff has a tendency to get everywhere, and floors are better without little orange spots.
Have fun!! : )

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
This is going to be long, so I apologize! But I am going to try to be as helpful as possible.
The first time I used the Marron over previously chemically died hair. I want to get away from chemical dyes and take a natural route. The first time, I used four blocks (my hair is shoulder length, all one layer, fine, and thick), placed in a glass bowl, poured hot coffee over top, let them melt, mixed to a brownie batter consistancy, and applied to my hair. I tried to use a brush, but it didn't help... I used my hands and made a huge mess from the coffee grounds in the henna. I cling wrapped my hair, put a towel on my head, and waited 4 hours. Washing it out was really not so bad. I used the power massage setting on my shower head, rinsed, applied a ton of conditioner to my head, rinsed, repeat, then shampooed and conditioned as normal. The whole rinsing out process took about 15 minutes.
The results were ok. Nice color. My hair was dry afterwards. Not crazy about everything, but wasn't disappointed either. So this time, I went with the rouge. The rouge is exactly what I was looking for and the results were fantastic!
This time, I did not use coffee... just a generous squirt of lemon juice and hot water. I put it in the same glass bowl and set that bowl in simmering water on the stove. I melted the bars, made a brownie batter consistancy, poured it into a big hair color bottle, and applied to my head. Cling wrapped my head, put on a towl, and slept in it. The henna was on my hair about 12 hours total. I rinsed my hair out the same way as before but THIS time I did not use shampoo. I used a cleansing conditioner.
This time.. no dryness... more vibrant color... EXACTLY what I wanted. It's the perfect shade of red... think Debra Messing. I am in love. Crazy shine, lots of bounce, highlights, lowlights, perfection.
The smell I really enjoyed, actually. It smells like really strong cloves and the marron smells like cloves and coffee. If you're sensitive to scents, be careful... it is a STRONG scent.
I've attached a picture of after so you can see. My hair was previously the marron color that had faded... it was a medium red/brown.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I wanted to wait a bit to write my review. I LOVE this product, and LOVED it after the first use! I read through many, many reviews before I was brave enough to try this myself. I have been coloring my hair a particular box color for the past 22 years. I got a lot of compliments on it as it was a reddish blonde that worked well with my skin tones. However, as I have gotten older (and wiser!) I have found that my hair was not holding the red as well as it used to- it would look good for a week after I colored and then would fade to this weird blondish color. I am into more natural products in general at this point in my life and finally got up the courage to try caca rouge henna. I had them do a test strip for me at the store and I left it on for a couple of hours before rinsing. That day I kept looking at my strip and loving the color more and more, so I decided to GO FOR IT. I did my whole head that night, leaving it on for 2 hours before rinsing. I knew it would get messy as I had read reviews about this. It wasnt as messy as I expected...but it did get around in the bathroom. I prefer the earthy scent of the henna to the ammonia smell of my previous color. AND, my scalp was getting really irritated from my other color. This henna did not irritate me at all. I wrapped my head in saran wrap and covered it all with a towel. My hair is a medium bob length with layers in the back and I used 2 1/2 squares (part of a square was used for the strand test.) The second time I applied it, I used the remaining 3 squares but I bet I could have used only 2. After rinsing and blowdrying my hair, I was worried about how RED it looked. Red, red, red! The first day after application, I felt like a chameleon as the color looked different every time I looked in a mirror. However, the color matured and then stayed very nice until I did a followup about a month later. It has been 2 weeks since I did the second application. I am still waiting for my roots to grow out entirely from when I was coloring it before. However, it looks incredibly pretty indoors and very nice in the sun. My grey hairs are super sparkly. And I have Not yet mentioned just how SHINY this product made my hair. Truly, that is one of the things I like most is JUST how much it shines. Every day when I look in the mirror I LOVE my hair. I have gotten a lot of very nice compliments on this as well and I have told many people about this product. I did read about other hennas that you can buy in the powder form, mix with something acidic, leave it in bowl overnight to allow it to release the color...and then you put it on your hair and pray you got it right. I LOVE this Lush product as it has all the benefits of henna but comes premixed and all I need is to add hot water. I might add that I have an electric teapot that I set up in the bathroom for my boiling water. I use 2 glass mixing bowls (the larger one on the counter holds just hot water and the smaller one on the top has the henna block in it for mixing.) It did take a LONG time to rinse out, but I was expecting this. I used a combination of alternating a bit of shampoo and conditioner on my hair to help get all the particles to rinse out. And, I cleaned the whole shower afterwards. It is a long process but worth it.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I was so excited to use this product on my hair. I have dark brown almost black hair. I left this product on my head for over 2 hours wrapped in a plastic cap. When I rinsed the henna out of my hair there was NO color change at all! Not even a lighter brown! I would never recommend this product to anyone else.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
From the day I was born my hair was anywhere from auburn red to strawberry blonde but in my family our hair turns white, starting about age 18. For a while I went along with the paling color, people got to the point of calling me blonde and that's when I started coloring. After years of drugstore chemicals I switched to LUSH Caca Rouge two years ago. I keep the henna on my hair in a plastic shower cap for 4-5 hours and on my mostly white hair it turns a VIVID orangey red. (Less time = less color) It is bright and catches fire in direct sun. I get TONS of compliments but this hair color is not for the faint of heart. If you have fair hair, be sure what you want before you start. It does not fade or wash out. It leaves a clear line when my roots start growing out, I use a touch-up method applying it only to my roots every few weeks. About twice a year I cover ALL my hair to freshen up. Biggest problem is finding a 6 hour block of time when I will be at home, not need to go anywhere or have any visitors because running around with mud in my hair under a shower cap is not my best look. Use very warm water and plenty of conditioner to co-wash and get the grit out. It will darken a bit over the next several days. Hope this helps!

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I used this on my naturally curly hair. I've been natural for several months (big chopped in May 2012). I've been seeing lots of natural hair bloggers rave about the benefits of using henna to lighten your hair color and/or add shine. The first treatment was SUPER messy. I had henna everywhere. It was also difficult to wash out. It was like trying to wash mud and sand out of my hair. I knew this going in to the process though. I also wasn't a fan of the smell. Got lots of shine after the first treatment and a lightened color after the second treatment! I definitely plan to continue using this product along with the Henna Gloss recipe on Curly Nikki's website.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I can't even tell you how happy I am with this product. I'm naturally a really light strawberry blond but I've always wanted my hair to be a little more red, and this product is PERFECT for me.
I have shoulder length hair, not too thick or thin and I only have to use two bars, heck I could probably get away with 1 1/2 bars.
The first time I only left it in for 20 minutes because I was afraid of changing my color too drastically. I was worried at first because it came out looking kinda like hay but over the next two days it matured into something amazing. I've dyed my hair 2 more times since then, another 20 minute session, and once for an hour. I get hit on everywhere I go, in fact, one guy tried to give me his number while we were driving in traffic which has never happened before.
It seems like the brassy tones leave first and I'm left with a great coppery red tone that looks great even though I have red skin undertones.
Process:
I just grate the bars with a cheese grater and use about 1/3c boiling water for each square, sometimes I add lemon juice, and today I'm going to try adding red wine and paprika like some other reviewers mentioned.
I find it's easiest for me to get my hair wet first so that the henna applies easier. I put about 2 inches of water in the tub so if anything falls from my hair it's easy to clean up. While standing over the tub, I rub the henna in from root to tip, twist it over my head and wrap it in saran wrap. Sometimes I'll add a shower cap or an old towel because some liquid runs down my neck, but other than that it's so incredibly easy.
I've never been so excited to dye my hair.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I have dark brown wavy/curly hair with natural red undertones, this henna left my hair softer, gave it more shine and body but didn't color it as much as I had hoped. Though when I straighten my hair it does leave my hair with a natural looking red hue/glow. It defintely brought out the red undertones in my hair.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
My hair is naturally medium to dark brown, with some auburn undertones. I have been chemically dying it more intense shades of auburn for about a decade. I have always been curious about henna hair dyes, but was always scared away. I had always been told NOT to use them on hair that had been chemically treated. After a Lush employee reassured me that was not the case with their product, she convinced me to try the Caca Rouge. The added cocoa butter sounded like it would be a nice intensive treatment for my harried hair.
Although preparing, applying, and waiting on the treatment to work is definitely time-consuming, I find that I do not mind. I bought a pair of rubber kitchen gloves to use only for my henna treatments. I also purchased a large plastic squeeze bottle at a beauty supply store that I use for applying the prepared mixture. I find that I do make a bit of a mess, so I lay down an old towel in my basement and kneel over to apply the henna. I think the smell is amazing - earthy and spicy - and have enjoyed adding my own spices to amp up the smell as well. I have found that Caca Rouge is easier to wash out if you make the rinsing water very hot - use gloves! A wash with a clarifying shampoo like I Love Juicy afterwards also helps get those gritty bits out.
I have now used 2 full bricks of Caca Rouge - 4 treatments worth, and have another brick on order - so I certainly love the product. However, I wish it lasted longer. I was hoping I wouldn't have to use a chemical dye on my hair, but as my roots grew out, I noticed that the Caca Rouge was not covering these up for very long at all. My hair is past my shoulders, and would take quite awhile to completely grow out. I guess this product will allow me to use LESS chemical dye, but I was hoping to ditch it totally. Still, I really love this stuff! Wish it were cheaper though...

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I bought it because I wanted something to treat my scalp and hair and it was recommended by the woman in the store. I have rather short hair so I only used half of the brick which was just enough. It didn't stay wet on my hair long enough to apply it as well as I would of liked. I don't know if that's because I added hot water to the henna instead of using a double boiler (I don't have one). Getting it out was awful! I didn't mind having to rinse repeatedly because I'm used to that from years of dying my hair, but it got stuck in certain parts of my hair effectively ripping some of my hair out as I applied conditioner and more conditioner to soften it up. I'm going to try it again because I really like the color and it warrants a second chance.

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
Seriously, this stuff is great. I have naturally very dark brown hair but I always wanted a light copper color. I decided to stop going to a stylist because it would always end up with more of a red glaze that wore off in a a few weeks and it wasn't light enough. Instead I:
1)pre-oil my hair with olive+coconut oil to help protect it
2)apply hydrogen peroxide (using a spray bottle) and overnight it
3)wake up, wash it out and boom light brown hair!
From now on I only have to worry about occasionally spraying the roots to match.
After that I apply the henna:
1)cheese grate that stuff up
2)pour boiling water over it and mix. I like to try and get it as thin as possible without having to worry about it dripping.
3)section hair and apply henna **this is important! the first few times I did it, I just globed it on and expected myself to be able to just rub it in to my roots for even coverage. The henna dried into a mud-like consistency and dreads your hair so if you don't put in on evenly you can't really do anything about it:(
4) cover hair in plastic wrap and sleep! (I leave it in for about 6-7 hours)
5) WASH IT OUT AND LOOK FABULOUS.
My only problem is that it seems to go out of stock quite often and I don't have any left to use before I go back to school :( I know now to stock up whenever it comes back (hurry up, lush!)

Comments about LUSH Caca Rouge Mama:
I've been dying my hair with henna the last few months. I've used henna a couple of times in high school, but always under my mom's supervision, whose been using henna since before I was born. So, when I used this product for the first time, I had some experience with henna, but it was still kinda new for me. And I was not satisfied with the result.
I knew it was gonna be messy, so I was prepared for that, and the smell honestly didn't bother me, in fact I liked it better than most henna products I've used before. The problem was the color. My hair is naturally a dark blonde, right after I washed it, it looked great, it was a deep coppery red, which was just what I wanted. But it faded, and I mean fast. It went from a beautiful deep red to an awful orangey color in just a couple of weeks. In some places I could even see my natural hair color. To give the product the benefit of the doubt, I waited a couple of months and dyed it again, with the exact same result. I don't understand how it happened, henna's supposed to be permanent.
I thought maybe it was just my hair, so I tried buying some pure henna and mixing it myself, and the results were incomparable. When I tried it with the pure henna, the color was even better than the caca rouge mama and it lasted way longer. With caca rouge mama everytime I washed my hair I would notice an orangey tint in the runoff water for several weeks after dying it, but when I used the pure henna that only happened the first couple of times I washed it. And the pure henna never faded.
It might just be my hair type, but that has never happened when I did it before, and it definitely never happened to my mother. I was so disappointed I almost switched to a chemical hair dye, I thought natural dyes must not work.
I do have a couple of good things to say about it. For one, as I mentioned, I think the smell is actually very nice. Kinda herbally. And it stayed in my hair for a long time (even though the dye didn't!). And for another, most hair dyes (henna or not) burn my scalp a little while processing, but this one didn't. It was very gentle, and my hair did seem healthier after dying it.
I think this product is good for a first time henna user, but if you like the color and are serious about being a permanent red head, you should probably switch to using pure henna and mixing it yourself at home. This product's easier because you can mix it and use it right away, and you only need water. Whereas pure henna has to be mixed with an acidic substance and left overnight. And it's tough to get the mix just right, I've been fiddling with it for awhile and I just got a mix I like.

A:
Unfortunately, black hair will only show very subtle colour results with the henna. To lighten hair that's quite dark, you'd need to use a chemical dye to remove pigment from the hair shaft. Because Les Cacas are 100% natural, they would not be able to achieve this on very dark or black hair.Answered on 8/28/2012 by Megan from LUSH Direct

1 answer
A:
Because henna coats the hair shaft (rather than lifting the cuticle and inserting chemical underneath, as chemical dyes do), an application of the henna can make it more difficult for chemical dye to be applied. It is possible that the henna may cause the other dye to react differently than you are accustomed to, so I would definitely recommend performing a strand test before applying the blue to your head. That way, you will know what kind of results to expect!Answered on 8/1/2012 by Laura from LUSH

I have a light brown/brown hair color. Will this product work to turn my hair a bright red or will it just give my brown hair a redder tint?Asked on 7/18/2012 by Veronica from CaliforniaKnow the answer? Answer this question
1 answer
A:
It really depends on your hair! Do a strand test to see what the results will be like! For the best results, I would recommend covering your hair (with cling wrap or another waterproof substance), and leaving it on for at least three hours. Some people also add things like lemon juice or paprika to brighten up the color. Make sure that you do your strand test exactly as you plan to do your whole head, to give you the most accurate preview possible!Answered on 8/1/2012 by Laura from LUSH

My hair is dark brown and very long. How much Caca Rouge Mama should I use and what color would my hair look after using this? I have virgin hair.Asked on 7/11/2012 by AlexKnow the answer? Answer this question
1 answer
A:
The Caca Rouge is designed to be the brightest red, but if your hair is very dark, the color will be quite subtle. It's most likely that you will see lots and lots of shine, and then a red tint in light (especially in the sunlight). However, if you do a strand test first, you will know exactly how your hair will turn out! Doing a strand test is always a good idea, so that you know what to expect when you are done. I would also recommend using the full block of henna if your hair is very long. The henna needs to be applied in quite a thick layer for best results, so depending on the thickness of your air, using a full block is probably a good idea!Answered on 7/12/2012 by Laura from LUSH

Hi, I am really curious about trying this product. I have a few questions. Will this stain your skin? If so, how do you prevent that? Is there a way to henna your eyebrows to match? Also, the ends of my hair were bleached and dyed months ago. The dye has faded out and my ends are just a bit lighter as a lasting result of the bleach, but I've heard henna + bleach = bad!! Is that only if the bleach is fresh? Is it possible to make an appt. and have this done at the store? Is there an additional cost for that? Haha, sorry for all the questions! Lastly, I wanted to know what kind of color would result from medium-dirty blonde hair. Thank you very much!Asked on 7/3/2012 by Leah from Mount Kisco, NYKnow the answer? Answer this question
1 answer
A:
The henna doesn't usually stain the skin, but I would recommend putting a layer of Ultrabland or Ultrabalm around the hair line and on the ears to prevent it from happening (or even a thick layer of body cream or lotion). The reason that we do not recommend using henna on bleached hair is because bleach can really damage the hair, leaving it porous and prone to breakage. This can affect how the color takes, and the color that the hennas leaves. If it's something as minor as hair that is a little bit lighter at the ends (and not and entirely bleached recently done platinum look), then it isn't as big of a risk. I would definitely recommend doing a strand test first though, including some of the hairs that have been affected by the bleach, to see how they react. Some shops are happy to apply the hennas, depending on a few factors (like space in the shop, or time of year - it can be harder when it is quite busy!), so I would recommend calling your local shop and seeing if they are available to help. The results really differ from head to head, but a strand test will let you know what the results will be!Answered on 7/13/2012 by Laura from LUSH

I have used the Caca rouge twice now on my previously boxed colored hair.. It looks incredible! This is my question: my new growth is a dark, mousie blonde. Because the henna went on previously colored (and lightened) hair, there are dark roots now (its been 5 weeks since henna and 9 to 10 weeks since dye with perixide) How can I get the roots lighter, so the henna will take this beautiful color all the way to the scalp?Asked on 6/14/2012 by Laura from Sanford, miKnow the answer? Answer this question
1 answer
A:
All of the henna colors are meant to add color to the hair, rather than strip pigment and lighten the hair, so unfortunately there isn't a way to use our hennas to lighten your roots. Generally, we do not recommend using the hennas in combination with synthetic dye, but if you have found it to be successful then I do not see any problem with continuing with what you are doing.Answered on 9/7/2012 by Melissa S from LUSH Direct

I used this product in my hair for the first time about 4 months ago. Since then, I have hennaed my hair twice. I was told by the woman at the Lush store that I would be able to highlight my hair, but should wait about 4 months. Now I'm reading online that I have to wait until the color grows out of my hair. Can you tell me which it is? I used Caca Rouge and recently colored over it with a herbal hair color, which changed it from a brighter red to a brownish red. I am wanting highlights in my hair, and plan on waiting another month to do so, but I wanted to know, one, does your product contain ANY metallic salts at all? I have long hair and am not interested in it "melting off". And, two, does the caca rouge contain indigo, and will the bleach turn to a green?Asked on 4/5/2012 by AnonymousKnow the answer? Answer this question

A:
There are no "un-natural" products in this stuff. No salts, no nothing. If you bleach over the henna, it will turn to a flaming orange colour, so be warned. Highlights over henna may not be the best unless you want an Annie Lennox circa The Eurythmics look.Answered on 4/18/2012 by empathicjoe from Cincinnati, OHA:
As far as I know there are no metallic salts contained in LUSH henna, unless there are hidden ingredients that are not mentioned on the website.
Henna coats your hair cuticle with color versus normal coloring, which opens up the hair cuticle and deposits color into the shaft. Depending on your hair color, condition, and amount of times henna was applied, your hair may in fact be stained to the point where it would take more than a few months to completely wash off. So long as there are no metallic salts contained in the products you have used, the only thing you're waiting for is for the henna to wash completely off of your hair before you highlight, or else you may wind having to severely over process your hair to 'lift' the henna off, which would be very damaging.Answered on 4/11/2012 by HSG from Los Angeles, CAA:
We do not use any metallic salts in our henna hair dyes, and the concern with using a synthetic hair colour product on top of the hair hennas is that your result may not be the shade you'd like. Since everyone's hair is different, there's no set time for when it is safe to use synthetic colour after using henna. Henna is technically a permanent change to the hair strand, as it really coats the hair strand, and using a synthetic color on top may push the color further into the hair's cuticles. This is why I'd strongly recommend completing a strand test with the synthetic colour prior to performing a full application to ensure the results will be to your liking, so that there aren't unpleasant surprises! Caca Rouge does not contain any indigo plant- only henna, so it is unlikely to turn green. That said, please do a strand test to be safe!Answered on 4/9/2012 by Megan from LUSH

I am having a problem getting the color to stay in my hair and I can see it rinsing out when I wash my hair. Is this supposed to happen? Am I doing something wrong?Asked on 3/10/2012 by AnonymousKnow the answer? Answer this question
1 answer
A:
It is normal for some colour to rinse out a bit the first few washes after an application, as with any hair colour product. If you are not seeing a change to the hair, this may be due to a few possible reasons. The hair may be too dark to see significant changes, or you might need to leave the henna on longer. I'd test with a strand of hair to leave it on for different lengths of time to see what your best results will be.Answered on 3/12/2012 by Megan from LUSH
