The soap really took away a lot of the oil even after the first use. I'm usually oily about 3 hours after washing my face, but didn't notice any oil about 7 hours after I had used this. It dries out blemishes as well (my face breaks out due to hormones).
The only bad thing about this soap is the smell. It gets a little better once you get used to it, but the first time I thought I was going to gag. The benefits out weigh the smell though for me.

I use this every night before bed and I really love it. I have slight acne problems and this really does seem to be helping. My face feels amazingly clean after, although VERY dry. My face feels very smooth so all I need is to add something to bring the moisture back to my face and it will be perfect. It smells just like black licorice, which I like, but I could see it bothering other people.

I use this product twice a day, morning and night. Ive paired it with Enzymion face lotion and my skin feels fantastic. I have combination skin, oily like crazy in my t-zone along with super dry areas as well. Its super fun (extreme sarcasm). Ive battled with my skin for years and finally after trying this soap I feel like Ive found my face's soul mate.

It smells SO GOOD! It makes me happy! It feels wonderful during and after using it. I do NEED to follow with a moisturizer...but Ive needed to do that regardless of what face soap Ive used. So I wouldnt say thats a negative at all. It cleans my face...leaves it feeling fresh and does not irritate my skin.

A super plus is that it lasts a very long time!

I am a loyal fan of this product. My skin used to be really oily and acne prone. I've been using this product for 3 years now and I'm hooked. I love how it gently exfoliates my skin daily, my skin texture, and absorbs the oil. I can't comment on removing makeup because I use a makeup remover. But, once I wash my face, it's very clean. I've referred this product to 3 people so far and they are loyal fans also.

My skin is both extremely picky and oily and acne-prone, so finding a soap that clears my skin without irritating it has been difficult. I was recommended this soap at a Lush store and after trying it haven't gone back to anything else. This soap is gentle enough that it doesn't irritate my skin but it works and actually makes my skin nearly normal. I use it twice a day and it keeps my skin really clear, which is pretty much amazing.

Some caveats are that it is pretty drying (which granted is kind of the point) so if it's winter or you live in a dry climate moisturizer is a must. I also generally remove my makeup with a wet wipe prior to washing my face with this soap since it doesn't seem that good at taking off make up and I also don't want it too near my eyes.

Overall though it's a great product. Some people may not like the smell but I really like it and a bar will generally last a couple months of twice a day use. I would definitely recommend this to anyone with oily or acne-prone skin, though if your skin isn't very oily you might find it too drying.

As someone with acne prone and sensitive skin, I've tried just about every over the counter and prescription soap and topical on the market in the last 10 years. I bought this soap on a whim and have been using it day and night for roughly a month and can tell a huge difference in my skin. Breakouts have become minimal and my sensitive skin is happy. I wear less make up because my skin tone is evening out. I've never been one to gush about products, but coalface has been a game changer for me!

I would totally give this soap five stars, except for the fact that it's pretty expensive (depending on the size block of it that you purchase) to not last very long. I bought about eighteen dollars worth and used it up in less than two weeks. True, I used it on my body as well as my face, but I was not expecting it to go so fast. On the plus side, it's a really great soap, especially for the acne-prone like me. I recommend it highly, but maybe find an alternative for a body soap if you're looking to decrease oil on all skin surfaces.

Without the toner and moisturiser, Coalface can be a bit drying, but it has a soap base, so it is expected. However, this does not cause new breakouts and helps heal the ones I already have. With the toner and moisturiser, my face feels lovely and light. It breathes. And I love this feeling. Thank you LUSH for helping me find my skin routine, now if only my hair wasn't so difficult...

I adore this product.
I have combination skin, I guess you'd say. It gets very oily throughout the day, but it is also extremely dry in many places.
I started using this and both of those problems cleared up. I don't have to blot my face or reapply my powder during the day like I used to.
I use it every night before bed by rubbing it on my hands and then rubbing it all over my face (it's too gritty for me to use directly on my face) and follow it with a few sprays of Breath of Fresh Air.
I get compliments on how my skin has a glow to it now, which is wonderful!
Some people complained about about the "black licorice" smell, which worried me because that smell usually bothers me. But the smell of this bar is soothing and lovely.
It doesn't leave a mess or residue like some stated.

I bought this and Dark Angels. I like them both, but this is the only one I feel comfortable using before I start my day. This cleanses as effectively as Dark Angels, without leaving the black residue on my fair skin. Not nuts about the scent, however it's not too bad.

I have been using this for almost 2 years, every morning and every night. It has saved my skin and I will never use anything else again. Hopefully you never get rid of this product! My skin is very sensitive and acne prone, this cleanser is the only thing that keeps my skin calm and clear.

I see a lot of complaints about the smell but it doesn't bother me, I think it smells nice and it's hardly even noticeable. My only complaint it that it doesn't remove makeup very easily.

I don't use everyday, maybe every 2 days or 3.
I like to scrub it in on my nose, between my eyebrows, and chin, where my face is oily and more prone to acne, and set for a minute then wash off.
I use herbalism and angels on bare skin after.

I use this product everyday morning and night. This is my go-to product for cleansing. Does a really great job cleaning and exfoliating and my skin feels so much better. It does dry out my skin a little but after cleansing you should always put a moisturizer on anyway. I don't mind the smell.

I walked into Lush thinking I had done enough research to just grab what I thought I needed and just leave. But, IT REALLY DOES HELP TO TALK TO THE ASSOCIATES. She suggested I try Coalface instead of what I originally wanted to get, and I'm so glad I went with her suggestion!

I have tried A LOT of stuff for my skin. I have combination, acne-prone skin. In the past, I've found that my skin responds well to some products for a little while before reverting back to being gross and icky. But, Coalface works wonders! My oil is controllable now. My skin has definitely cleared up. I especially love the little bits that help to gently exfoliate my skin. And, last but not least, I love that it's so easy to use!

With that said, there are some minor setbacks. One, I do feel that my skin is a little tight after washing with Coalface, but it's nothing that some moisturizer can't fight. I do get some little breakouts now and then BUT they don't stick around very long. Again, these are little things that I don't think ruin the product enough to be anything less than 5 star quality.

I would recommend that if you buy a chunk of it (like I did) to cut it up into little pieces. This helps for it to last longer, and I find that it's easier to use it if the soap fits in the palm of your hand.

But, if you're still wary, try a sample... but trust me, you'll definitely want to buy it for real.

I've spent a fortune on different pregnancy-approved facial cleansers and lotions, trying to battle a second and more brutal round of puberty that's kicked my oil glands into overdrive, led to tons of clogged pores, and what seems to be cystic acne. After 1 use of coal face, my skin drastically improved - better skin texture, less excess oil, and my breakouts calmed down. After only a few days, using in conjunction with the vanishing cream and one use of the cupcake fresh facial, my pores are less clogged, and nearly all of my breakouts have gone away. I have far less oil on my face in the afternoon than I did when I was using other products. I've had better results using this bar soap and the vanishing cream on a twice-daily basis than I was getting using dermatologist-grade glycolic acid products with my clarasonic. Even my husband has started using this soap after seeing the great improvement to my skin. As someone with sensitive skin, I can highly recommend this using this product twice a day. Also, the bar soap will last for ages and produces a great lather. This product is a godsend, especially for pregnant women with oily skin who cannot use most acne products on the market.

I have very acne-prone skin. Got like six breakouts right this second. But when I used Coalface, I had no such worries. Usually. It's scrubby, and it got rid of all the dead skin and the old make-up and whatever other gross things were on my face. Sure, I looked like a racist cartoon while doing it - the soap literally paints your face dark grey until you rinse - and it smelled, well, not great, but it WORKED!
This soap pretty much does not lather, but that's ok, because lather doesn't actually help soap work. Soap lathers because we expect it to, so makers put lather-y things in it. Lather-y things are not clean-y things. Coalface is all about clean! Well, except that whole being messy thing. It lasts forever, too. I used a little tiny sample for 2/3 of my first semester. it was the size of my pinkie!
Honestly, I'd still use it today if my mother wouldn't kill me for getting charcoal in all the hand towels.

Since turning 40, my normally smooth skin started to pimple and get dark spots. I had tried all sorts of (non animal tested)soaps and cleansers and was frustrated as none f them solved my problem. I discovered Coalface and will be using it for the rest of my life (hopefully lush will not discontinue it). It is perfect for my skin and since I already know that charcoal is great for absorbing access oil, I knew I hit the jackpot when I saw it. I was hooked after using it the first time. It has a very nice black liquorice scent to it and the mild exfoliating grains are very gentle on the skin. Here's the kicker, YES it even takes off make up! I was with it every morning and my face feels renewed each time.

This was recommended to me based on my skin type by the Lush sales associate. I wanted to like it, and did try it several times, but it was just awful each time. I had to hold my breath when using due to the overpowering, irritating, perfumey smell. My main problem though was that no matter what I did I could not wash all of this product off of my face. I tried scrubbing with a wash cloth, prolonged rinsing, and would even wash with another cleanser afterwards, but no matter what, black residue appeared on my white towel. I would not recommend this product, as something that won't wash off itself certainly won't leave your skin feeling clean! I sadly had to throw mine away, which I hate doing!!

This was the first cleanser I bought from Lush. I only got a small chunk in the store just in case it didn't work well, and I'm glad I did.

It's a good product, it just wasn't right for my skin. It worked pretty well for the first one or two days, but then it made my skin really irritated and broken out. My skin is just too sensitive for it, and it was still tight and irritated even after I put moisturizer on.

Like I said, it's a good product, just not for me. If I had the right skin for it, my only complaint would be the smell.
