Q:Right now I am alternating Ocean Salt and Angels on Bare Skin. I then use Breath of Fresh Air as my toner. I then finish it off with Vanishing Cream. I have purchased this product too, but I'm not sure when I should put it on. Before toner, after toner or after moisturizer? I would appreciate some input.Asked on 2/6/2015 by Tim
A:I use mine after toner. I think that's best so the product gets absorbed
properly. I let it dry then I put on my moisturizer. Hope this helps!Answered on 2/10/2015 by Anonymous
A:Hi there! Thanks for your question!
Its totally up to you and your routine, but personally I cleanse, then use spot treatment like Grease Lightning, then use a toner, and then moisturize.
:) Hope this helps!
Happy washing!Answered on 2/10/2015 by Anonymous
A:In my routine, I cleanse, tone, use grease lightning, and then moisturizer.

Q:Our son is 16 and has tried several acne products, both OTC and prescription - nothing is helping! Will this product make his skin worse, seeing as he's tried so many cleansers and creams? We've been dealing with this problem for close to a year now; he's getting very frustrated that a solution can't be found.Asked on 1/30/2015 by Clear Face from United States
A:I'd suggest giving this a shot. I have been dealing with hormonal acne for 10 years now (I'm 33) and it IS making a difference! Finally something that works for me. Like the previous "answerer," I use Herbalism as well. Hope it works! (Drinking more water has helped me a lot, too) I don't see how this would make it any worse, it isn't harsh.Answered on 2/22/2015 by Suzystumpjumper from USA
A:Grease Lightning is a great spot treatment for acne! The tea tree and witch hazel will help to zap those problem areas while the thyme and rosemary act as a natural sebum balancer. Sebum is the natural oil the skin produces, so the thyme and rosemary will help to even things out and give a natural balance to the skin. The aloe vera will also help to calm the redness in the skin, helping to soothe those problem areas as well.Answered on 2/13/2015 by Meg from LUSH Direct
So I'm 29 and have been suffering from acne since I was 12 so I absolutely understand the frustration. Obviously his raging hormones are playing an unfortunately huge part in the skin issues. I use a combo of products from Lush for my acne. On my body I use Ocean Salt scrub (and occasionally on my face too when my breakouts are downright awful because the salt helps dry stuff up), Herbalism face wash, the Greased Lightning, and also the Imperalis moisturizer. I noticed that an increase in my water consumption, and decrease in dairy consumption has also helped my skin all over too.
My skin has improved greatly from these products (and I have tried so many products from other places it's sad), everyone is different though so these may or may not work for him. They are worth a shot though. I hope his skin gets better ASAP, I know how he feels.

A:ALSO, I use the Cupcake fresh face mask when I'm in the neighborhood of an actual store. Not sure if he'd be down to try that out, but that's another suggestion.
My best to you guys.

Q:I was wondering in my case and I am sure other women have to deal with this as well, but I break out in blochy redness where I have to shave and pluck my chin... Will this help keep the break out down and not as red?Asked on 1/3/2015 by Alli_Turtles from Roanoke, VA
A:Grease Lightning will help control redness, but for something to help soothe the irritated areas I would recommend a moisturizer. Cosmetic Lad, specifically is formulated for post-shaving and plucking!Answered on 2/13/2015 by Melissa S from LUSH Direct
A:I'm a man, but I can say that I find Grease Lightning reduces redness or
breakouts in all areas of the face.Answered on 1/3/2015 by Anonymous
Q:Hi! I recently went to my nearby Lush store and got 3 products: the 9-5 cleanser, Grease Lightning, and the Cupcake face mask. In what order should I use these? I was thinking using 9-5, then Grease Lightnin, and the face mask last. Any recommendations? Thank you!Asked on 9/13/2014 by Rebecca
A:We always recommend using our face masks on clean dry skin. For best results I would cleanse the skin (with 9-5), follow with a face mask and finish up with a dab of Grease Lightning as the end. Grease Lightning is a spot treatment and you can wear it about your day as it dries clear. Apply it as often as you wish!Answered on 9/25/2014 by Anonymous
A:Grease Lightning is a spot treatment and should be used last. It's designed
to put a little on a trouble area and to let it dry. So the order I would
suggest would be cleanser, face mask, grease lightning.
Also, a face mask should only be used once or twice a week.
On another note, I would suggest picking up a moisturizer and possibly a
toner. (Lush's tea tree water toner is great, I also like to buy the Tree
Tea Toner Tabs which are a face steam (you drop the tab in hot water in a
bowl then place your face over it with a towel to keep the steam in) and
then put the water in a spray bottle and use that as a toner instead of
buying the separate toner. As for moisturizers, the one to get varies
depending on skin type, but Lush has one for everyone.) If you do pick up a
toner or moisturizer, the order would be cleanse, face mask, toner,
moisture. Grease lightning would be good after the moisturizer as well, but
that's an 'as needed' product, so you probably won't use i everyday. If you
used a face steam it would be cleanse, steam, face mask, toner, moisturize.
Then on days you don't use the face mask, just omit it from the order.
(cleanse, toner, moisture) Also, if you do decide to try a steam tab, then
that would only be needed once a week (maybe twice if you really want to)
or even less then that.Answered on 9/13/2014 by onigirimelon from Minneapolis, MN
Q:I recently bought this product and my usual lush routine is i put on herbalism, the tea tree water toner, and then lastly the enzymion facial moisturizer. So i was wondering is when i should apply this to my face. After the tea tree water toner water or after i wash off the herbalism product off my face?Asked on 8/15/2014 by Marcy from Los Angeles
A:I recommend using it as your final step, after the moisturizer.Answered on 9/25/2014 by Kayla from LUSH DIRECT
A:I think you'll be fine either way, but I would personally put it on
after the herbalism cleanser. Grease Lightning is by its very nature
designed to give maximum potency treatment to problem areas, and so I
would want it to be the very first chemical "payload" delivered to the
I can vouch for its effectiveness in general, myself.Answered on 8/19/2014 by Anonymous
A:I use mine right after the toner and then wait a little before I moisturize. Typically I wash and use toner after my shower and then go to sleep an hour or two later and I moisturize right before bed.

Q:Is this product for acne scars?Asked on 8/1/2014 by Jess
A:Grease Lightning is for helping minimize spots as they occur rather than scars. Perhaps trying something like Ocean Salt to exfoliate the skin and help minimize the look of the scars.Answered on 9/12/2014 by Anonymous
A:No, the directions on the bottle say to not use on broken skin so I try to
avoid using it on scars as well. I use it for pimples as soon as I feel
them on my skin. It works really well in minimizing pimples.Answered on 8/1/2014 by Anonymous
Q:I don't get pimples so much as I do blackheads. I've had them forever will this product help clear that up?Asked on 3/26/2014 by Moxie
A:It will help pull toxins out, but I would recommend perhaps Mask of Magnaminty for really stubborn blackheads.Answered on 4/2/2014 by Kayla from LUSH DIRECT
A:I have blackheads also but this helps more controlling the oil in the face and diminishing pimples. As for the blackheads I use masks to help reducing them :)

I have one quick question.
I am really confused how to use it because it is tea tree cleanser.
Should I wash my face after I dab on my skin? or I dont need to wash my face?
Is it same with tea tree spot treatment?
Please help me!!Asked on 12/8/2013 by Stella from CA
A:Grease Lightning works best when applied to clean skin so we recommend cleansing and moisturizing before applying it as a spot treatment.Answered on 1/31/2014 by Melissa S from LUSH Direct
A:First you wash your face, use a toner, and then you put the grease lighting on and let that soak into your skin then use a moisturizer.

A:This is how I use Grease Lightning, and have been using it for 3+ years: first I wash my face with my normal cleanser. I then tone with my toner, and then use Grease Lightning after that. I use it as an all over acne treatment, so about a pump and it covers my whole face. It can feel sort of sticky, so as a Lush worker told me, I use my moisturizer afterward! I can not live without this stuff :)Answered on 12/8/2013 by Anonymous
A:I always apply this after I wash my face and then either rub it into any
problem spot like a lotion, or just dab a problem spot and let it dry,
either works. I'd say dabbing a spot and letting it dry is the best, since
it's helping to dry out whatever's in the skin, but if you're working on
something deep set, then rubbing it in is best in that situation. You don't
have to wash your face before using this, however. I'd also advise you to
wait a little while before washing your face after you apply it.
You can treat it how you treat the green tea spot treatment.Answered on 12/8/2013 by onigirimelon from Minneapolis, MN
Q:Hi, I am a long time user of Lush products, and have had great success with the skin care line. I tend to have pretty decent skin overall, but due to some family and work stress, as well as the changing weather, my skin freaked out. I loaded up on skin products at my local Lush store, and things are looking good. But I have a question about Grease Lightning - where in my skin routine should I use this? I use Ocean Salt and Ultrabland once or twice a week - usually using the Ocean Salt after the Ultrabland, as I feel I don't get the Ultrabland totally off of my skin just with toner, and I'm worried about clogging my pores. The other days I use Let the Good Times Roll, and have been spot treating with Cosmetic Warrior. I then use the Breath of Fresh Air Toner, and Imperialis Cream - Where does Grease Lightning fit in? After the toner and before the mosturizer? Should I let the toner dry first? Thanks for all your help!Asked on 10/3/2013 by Hilarious from Beverly, Ma
A:I would suggest using the Grease Lightning after any other facial cleanser but before toners or moisturizer. It's recommended that you use a clean finger to dab a small amount of Grease Lightning over troubled skin. You can apply it directly to spots or on oily areas for a matte finish.Answered on 11/17/2013 by Anonymous
A:It's a cleanser, so if you're using it for spot treatment, use it before the toner. Don't use it after because it doesn't dry clear and you have to wash it off. I also use it at night if I'm at home (not going outside again) and put it on pimples/outbreaks and leave it on.

Q:Can I use this product twice a day?Asked on 7/10/2013 by Albert from LA, CA
A:Yes you can! I use it twice a day morning and right before i got to sleep at night. you can use it as much as you want without the risk of it drying you face out.Answered on 8/5/2014 by KaraJane from Massachuesetts
A:Yes, you can use the Grease Lightning as often as you like.Answered on 9/20/2013 by Megan from LUSH Direct
Q:Can this be used as a cleanser itself?Asked on 7/10/2013 by Soman E. QzSoLil Time
A:I would recommend using your regular cleanser first, and then using the Grease Lightning on any acne or acne-prone areas as a spot soothing gel.Answered on 9/20/2013 by Megan from LUSH Direct
Q:What is the shelf life and how long does this moisturizer last you?Asked on 6/12/2013 by Michaela from Denver, Colorado
A:Grease Lightning is a very effective spot cleanser for acne or oily parts on your face, so it isn't a moisturizer. It has a 14 month shelf life and the "Made On" and "Use By" dates are included on the bottle! If you are looking for a moisturizer to help oily skin, check out Vanishing Cream, Enzymion or Imperialis!Answered on 9/25/2013 by Anonymous
Q:do you put this on before you go to bed?Asked on 2/16/2013 by Dana from USA
A:You can apply Grease Lightning any time you like! We recommend using it right after you wash your face and before you put your moisturizer on, but you can re-apply it throughout the day!Answered on 8/14/2013 by Anonymous
A:Yup! anytime I have a breakout.
You can use it during the day but you have to be careful because once it dries down it can get a bit flaky and if you put too much on it may cause your makeup to fall off in chunks.Answered on 3/4/2013 by Tatyana from Toronto
Q:Can I use this for ingrowns on my bikini area (from shaving and bicycling)?Asked on 9/20/2012 by Annabanana
A:Yes, you can use Grease Lightning on any (external) skin you'd like to keep clear!Answered on 10/26/2012 by Megan from LUSH
Q:I have somewhat dry skin but I still get breakouts despite my skin not being that oily. I dont get huge zits, just clusters of tiny whiteheads. My question is, will this product make my skin more dry?Asked on 8/17/2012 by britt
A:It might. It's not like some acne treatments--like things super high in salicylic acid--that dry your pimples by drinking your skin. I do feel that the way the product dries on my skin and flakes off makes me feel a little dry. I'm not sure what about it does that. See if you can get a sample, because it's worth a try, at least!Answered on 9/10/2012 by whokilledmaxine from Fair Haven, VT
A:Grease Lightning is used to fight blemishes, and will therefore dry the area that it is applied to by the very nature of its intended use. It won't create dryness in the skin overall over time, rather just the area it is applied to while it is on the skin. Grease Lightning also contains a lot of conditioning ingredients to prevent the skin from feeling overly dry.Answered on 11/2/2012 by Melissa S from LUSH Direct
Q:I have pretty big pores! I would like to know if this will minimize them?Asked on 7/23/2012 by Leslie
A:Grease Lightning won't shrink pores, but it will help keep them bacteria-free! It will help prevent acne. For minimizing pores, I'd give the primer/tints and colour supplements a whirl!Answered on 8/28/2012 by Megan from LUSH Direct
Q:Can this be used on your entire face, or only recommended for spot treatment?Asked on 6/24/2012 by Talia
A:It can be used on the entire face, but I would still recommend using a moisturizer, too. It doesn't contain any oils or butters, so will not be able to moisturize the skin the way that a cream or moisturizer can. If it helps your skin, though, there is no reason that it can't be used all over the face!Answered on 7/13/2012 by Laura from LUSH
Q:Why is methylparaben an ingredient in this product?Asked on 6/20/2012 by Anonymous
A:Because Grease Lightning contains water, it requires preservatives in order to prevent bacterial or microbial growth. Enter Methylparaben! We use this preservative because of its long history of safe use, and its effectiveness, although we do use it in the lowest concentrations we can.Answered on 7/13/2012 by Laura from LUSH
Q:Should you use grease lightning under or on top of your moisturizer?Asked on 6/15/2012 by Anonymous
A:I find it works best underneath my moisturizer, personally.Answered on 6/19/2012 by Megan from LUSH
A:I would recommend using this product under your moisturizer. I have found that it works better this way, especially if you let it dry slightly before putting your moisturizer on.Answered on 6/21/2012 by Newlywed from Boise, ID
