I just want to preface this very long and detailed review by saying that this is my personal experience with ONE BAR of Karma Komba over an extended period of time, in which many things changed (hair length, conditioner, etc). Nonetheless, I hope this is useful!
Background: I have a LOT of very straight Asian hair that leans toward the soft side with dryer tips and oilier roots. When I first started using Karma Komba, it was layered and medium length with the longest layer reaching about 2 in past my shoulders. By the time the bar was finished, my hair was layered, bleached, and long with the longest layer reaching just past my armpits.
The scent: I wasn't a huge fan of it at first, but it really grew on me and all of my male friends always loved the way I smelled whenever I used this. At first, it seemed to stay in my hair until the next wash with a different shampoo, but as the bar got smaller, the scent tended to linger for shorter amounts of time. This may have been due to changes in conditioner though.
Functionality: This was my first solid shampoo and I was pleasantly surprised at how it lathered and cleaned just as well. Just like any other shampoo, it didn't clean as well towards the end, but this is mostly attributed to the fact that there's just less of it.
Longevity/Value: I bought this little bar back in May 2011 and it just ran out in this past October. My hair tends to "get used to" shampoos within a month, so I didn't use it exclusively these past 1.5 years, but I kept track and can confidently say that I used the bar 101 times. (I'm in a family of scientists, so quantitative data is VERY important to me.) As a comparison, I finished a 6oz bottle of shampoo after 58 uses, so I'd say that its longevity is comparable to a regular 13oz. HOWEVER, its bar form makes air travel much easier, if you're like me and prefer to put your toiletries in your carry-on bag just in case your luggage is lost.
How I used it: I found that the best way for me was to wet the bar slightly before swiping it through my hair. At the beginning, I would just do two vertical swipes of the bar on the top, then flip my hair over and do a single vertical swipe down the middle of the bottom layers. As my hair grew, I had to adjust the number of swipes (two on top and two on bottom, then 3 on top and two on bottom, etc). Towards the end, the bar started to fall apart (as expected), making the swipes pretty tiny, so I just kind of crumbled the pieces into my wet hair and just moved my head in and out of the stream of water while working the product in until I had an adequate amount of lather.
Storage: After finishing swiping it through, I'd take the top of the Lush tin and put it on top of my wet bar outside of the direct stream of water, then flip it over and let it dry outside the shower. Once dry, I'd put the lid with the bar attached on the bottom of the tin and shake until I heard the bar come loose within. I found that this way, there's less water collecting in the tin and more of the bar staying together as one piece.
Verdict: Karma Komba didn't move the earth for me, but it's definitely effective as a shampoo. The scent makes me smile now, though at first, it just puzzled me. Apparently boys like it though. The bar lasted for a similar amount of uses as a regular 13oz bottled shampoo, but was more ideal for air travel. Overall, I'd say this is a handy little shampoo and it's pretty cool to use. Would I repurchase? Probably. I want to try Lush's other solid shampoos though!

I've used a couple of Lush's solid shampoos and Karma Komba is one of my favorites. The smell is fantastic (but only if you like patchouli). It works very well to clean oil, dirt, sweat etc out of your hair and lathers well if your hair is good and wet when you apply it. I have straight, fine and oily hair and it likes the shampoo provided my hair is dirty and and oily enough not to be stripped by the cleansers.
I keep my bar in my shower in the tin, leave the tin open after using it to let it air dry and shut the tin once the bar is dry. It lasts MANY months that way. But I switch between a bottled shampoo and my Karma, so I think a bar gets my medium length hair about 60 washes.
I live in a dry environment and the weather here in the winter time is especially arid. I find I cannot use this shampoo regularly in the winter without making my scalp itchy and flaky. I normally wash my hair every other day, and and in the winter this shampoo bar is too much, leaving my ends brittle and dry, and my healthy scalp itching like a mad dog.
Also, you will probably need conditioner after this bar because it will strip the oils out of your hair. Good clarifier, but harsh for daily use on fine hair.

This is probably the best shampoo EVER. I've used Seanik, Squeaky Green and non-Lush brands: if yu have long, wavy/curly hair that's decently dry and think that you can't moisturize, detangle AND get a clean scalp, you've clearly never purchased Karma Komba! Smells like the perfume: I must've been good in another life, and really just feel earthy, and beautiful. Washes out well, not overpowering, and makes conditioner glide in easily. Use R and B after your conditioner and leave it in forever (until next wash) and hair is just perfect.

Not only does it smell amazing, it has helped my hair in ways no other shampoo could. My hair is soft, shiny and my wavy hair gets a little extra definition, all thanks to this ONE little bar! Its a mega confidence booster!
This one bar can last you a few months, its amazing. So if it seems a wee bit spendy, remember that you're really getting more than what you're paying for!
I use this every day and let my hair air dry. I like to pair it with Happy Happy Joy Joy conditioner when I feel like treating my hair a little extra special.
The one thing that it does not help with is tangling, as it claims. But all in all, I'm a diehard fan and will be using this bar FOREVER!

I do not use the 3 swipes as recommended. I USE A BUNCH! I LOVE this shampoo! I was very skeptical as I am a researcher (PhD) and thought this little hard thing could not shampoo my hair, but I bought it as I love the fragrance. I am IN LOVE with this and am OVER 60 YEARS OLD! LOVE IT! I have my hair color treated (woven) and my color DOES NOT change! I was afraid it would go down the drain but NO! Honestly, and I pay a lot of money per month! I recently bought Karma Komba and LOVE it. I have used Lush facial and skin products for years but for some reason never tried the shampoo bars. This shampoo is easy to use, great for the environment and smells great while shampooing. My naturally wavy hair responds well to this bar, and I don't even need scrunch spray or mousse anymore to maintain the wave in my hair! I use it with Lush Big Solid Conditioner and this seems to be a great combo. I would highly recommend this product for anyone, especially those with wavy hair. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is that it does not leave your hair smelling like Karma. I wish it did! :)

When I heard of solid shampoos, I had to run out to my closest Lush store to buy one. With the help of a lovely employee, I decided on Karma Komba. My hair is long, chemically straightened, thick, and prone to tangles. The search for a shampoo that can tame my locks is endless, so when I found this, I wanted to go home and use it right away. The product lathered very well, and it was easy to get it into my hair. Although they recommend running it through the hair three times, I do it a few more because I find that three isn't enough. When I rinsed it out, I could instantly feel how clean my hair was. My hair still remained tangly after drying, but I believe that it's my hair's fault, definitely not the product's. Another great plus is that my hair didn't absorb all of the water in the shower. Usually my hair is dripping by the time I get out, but Karma Komba helped lessen that. Lastly, the smell is so nice. It's very herbal and my friends say that I smell like a forest. Although the smell is very strong at first, it fades a bit throughout the day. Although it fades, I can still catch whiffs of it every now and then, and it brings a smile to my face!

I received this in the "Don't Knock it Till You've Tried It" gift set. I was super skeptical of a solid shampoo, and I even hesitated to use this for a few weeks. I kept pulling it out, sniffing it, and putting it back in the little lunchbox it came in. I am not a fan of pachouli, the smell almost always makes me gag... But this shampoo smells like heaven. I am in LOVE with the smell. Finally I felt adventurous enough to try it... WOW! The lather was extreeeeeeeeeeme, so many bubbles! My hair has never felt cleaner. I have long, bleach blonde hair that's naturally unruly and damaged from dye and straightening. This shampoo made my hair truly clean, packed with extra volume, and silky smooth. I was even able to comb through before conditioning. Liquid shampoo literally makes my hair like a rats nest afterwards, but this detangled and everything fell into place. I would buy this again, and today I actually ordered Godiva to try as well. Thanks Lush, I'm hooked on solid shampoo. Never going back to liquid! I followed it up with Big Solid Conditioner, and a little bit of deep conditioning treatment on my ends. If you have extra dry hair or damaged ends, definitely follow Karma Komba or other solid shampoos up with a good conditioner.

For daily use, or especially if you travel .... you don't need to pack all those creature comfort body washes and shampoos! This little bar does it all! It has a rich lather for a shampoo and is excellent for an all over body wash! The best plus is that is smells divine! You will love this shampoo bar. Go mountain climbing or hiking, and it is all you need! Excellent product!

Karma Komba, wouldn't be the best for Karma Komba. We currently only have one shampoo which was designed specifically for use on colour-treated hair, and that is our brand new Blousey shampoo. It's very gentle and super hydrating so it will not pull out the colour as quickly as our other shampoos might. We use many fresh botanical ingredients, essential oils, as well as safe synthetics to make our products, and we do not claim this product is all-natural.
