Porridge is perfectly creamy--and the scent makes me want to wrap up in a blanket and be next to a fire. It gives off such a sweet, toasty fragrance. The scrubbie oats are wonderful and just the right amount.

When the bar is at its smallest (and roughest), I knead the little bits and pieces into my washcloth and lightly exfoliate my body with it. I'm a total sucker for this soap.

I even keep a slice (inside of its paper wrapper) in one of my dresser drawers to give my clothes and undergarments the same molasses scent. Honestly, it's so addicting, I take a whiff of the bar whenever I'm in the bathroom.

Just be sure to keep it far away from the shower head, as it melts quickly. Also...shake off the bubbles and water from the bar when you're done using it--that way, Porridge lasts longer.

This is my second love...after my boyfriend who hand-picked this for me. Neither one of us had heard of LUSH until he visited his mother in L.A. He chose this one for me because he loves orange juice (which this contains) and for the oats (he knows I'm a lover of all things healthy)...and it's been absolutely perfect for me ever since.

Thanks LUSH...I've been a committed customer the day I got hooked.

After quite a few visits to this online catalogue and dreaming about all the wonderful products that I would love to try, I finally made a pilgrimage to a LUSH counter with a dear friend of mine to scoop up some goodies. (While I do shop online for quite a lot of different things, when it comes to beauty products I like to see them in person before I buy...so visiting the shop itself was the best option for me).

Among some of the brighter, flashier, and often more pungent soaps that this Lush location had to offer, poor Porridge might easily be missed. Thankfully, my companion (a happy Lush veteran) plucked a bar out of the gigantic soap quarry along the wall and brought it to my attention. I was glad that she did--Porridge is really quite lovely if you give it a chance. True to its name, it does have a soft oatmeal smell with a hint of clay when dry. I found this particularly nice because I'm rather sensitive to most smells and don't like anything that's overly floral or ridiculously strong. (I'm not the biggest fan of patchouli, for instance.)

Along with a few other products, I brought home a large brick of Porridge to enjoy. From past experience with handmade soaps, I know that they tend to run out quickly, so I decided to cut off a small chunk (about the size of my thumb) to use at first. This lasted three showers.

When wet, the oatmeal smell is a bit more intense, but it's by no means overwhelming. I was also a bit amused to find that the lather was almond-colored (instead of the usual white).

Under ordinary circumstances, I shower with a pouf (which I think is the best tool to get lots of lather). With Porridge, I scrubbed up with my hands because I was concerned that the little grits in the soap would tangle in the mesh of my pouf and be nearly impossible to rinse out. The lather in my palms was decent enough, but not the best.

Oh, those grits!!! They were the sole reason that I took off two stars for this product. I found them to be very annoying. There are far more packed in the bar than you'd think. I'm sure it's great for those who like their soap to exfoliate, but for me it was just a big mess all over the floor of my shower. I just flushed them down the drain--but I wonder if I can continue to get away with it over time. Would my entire brick's worth of Porridge clog my pipes?

For my third shower experience with Porridge, I tried tying what was left of my thumb-sized chunk into a wash cloth and securing it with a hair band. It solved the problem of messy grits all over the place, but the washcloth seemed to absorb all the suds and it was a little bit more difficult to get myself clean. I don't really blame the soap--I know you can't get much lather with a washcloth to begin with, but I couldn't figure out another way to solve the grit problem.

I might go back to hand-lathering and invest in a good drain cover to protect my pipes from the grits in the future.

Other than that--Porridge is really something special. It smells good enough to eat, and, more importantly, I felt clean after using it and it didn't dry out my skin at all! (A common problem that I have with handmade soap.) If Lush would make a nice little grit-free version of Porridge that I could use with a shower pouf I would be 100% satisfied. (Maybe it could be called Cream of Porridge?)

Comments about Porridge Soap:

At first I enjoyed this soap, but the more I used it the less I liked it. It's fantastic for exfoliation, but not as an every day soap. Additionally, it does tend to crumble in your hand as you shower. Lathers better under hot water versus luke warm or cold. I do love the smell of it.

Comments about Porridge Soap:

This bar is the best soap bar I've used on my skin. I will admit that I don't use it on my legs everyday due to the exfoliating nature of the oats in the bar and my eczema is mostly on my legs. It's pretty moisturizing and I love the smell. The only thing I dislike is the fact that it contains sodium lauryl sulfate.

This soap is delicious smelling, moisturizing and lathers well! The smell is very comforting and leaves a light scent on the skin. I use this soap almost every time I bathe and it makes my skin feel so soft. The oats are a good exfoliant, too! I didn't give five stars because the soap goes so quickly. Just wished it went further! That being said, I will most defiantly be buying ts again!

I really like this soap. I stopped in the store and wasn't sure what to get being my first time. A lady told me about the store and products.(wish i could remember here name as i would have thanked her here) I advised her i had eczuma and she recommended the Porridge soap. She gave me a free sample to try. I really like it. Just think they could use less oats or grind them up a little.

it smells SO NICE. it is definitely sweet, but not artificially so, it isn't a "young" sort of sweet (if you get me there). the soap itself makes my skin super nice feeling, but then the rough scrubby-ness takes it over the edge. i LOVE to use it before i shave, it's also great for my face. okay, really it's just great all around. the only downside is that it can be kinda messy. but it is more than worth the little bit of clean up.

    Comments about Porridge Soap:

I used this when I first went off to high school. In the dorms, we tried to have unique stuff so it didn't get mixed up.
Everyone always knew when I'd been the last in the shower, because there would be pieces of nuts in the seams of the shower's tile floor. It's not a problem in smooth bathtubs or smooth shower stalls, but the tile caught the pieces and were a pain to rinse down the drain.

However, this soap was pretty much a miracle! It absolutely KILLED the stench from cheerleading during preseason - you'd have never guessed I was there for a 2-week cheer camp in 100+ weather! It scrubbed places I didn't know could be scrubbed, and it managed not to dry out my skin or clog my pores! That was the only time I didn't have any blemishes on my back and shoulders. I'd probably still be using it now, but I rather grew out of the scent. Unfortunately, it doesn't blend nicely with any non-vanilla based perfumes, and I don't like vanilla perfume.
However, even now, five years later, my bathroom kit - where I kept the *still-wrapped* bars of soap I hadn't used yet - still smells like it! Every once in a while I go and huff my kit. Usually get a noseful of spilled makeup, but before I sneeze, it smells so good!

      Comments about Porridge Soap:

I'll start by saying that I have very, very dry skin, so much so that I loathe washing my face with anything other than water. But I happened upon Porridge at my local store and the smell totally hooked me! It smells just like atole (a sort of Mexican hot chocolate that my gramma makes around the holidays). But best of all, it doesn't leave my skin cracked and screaming for lotion! Now, I've mentioned that I have dry skin, and lotion is still a must, even after using porridge. But my skin feels so good and looks bright, too.

My boyfriend also loves it. He loves that it doesn't smell feminine and he likes to use to oats to exfoliate.

I use Porridge maybe three or four times a week and I've been using the same bar for easily 9 months now! What a great value.

I really really love the scent of this soap. I really really do. It's absolutely divine and yummy. When I smelled it in the store, I knew I wanted it, so I bought a small chunk. The smell didn't disappoint in my shower, and everything time I walked past it I could smell it! It did have two draw backs though. I found that the soap tightened my skin (or dried it out, if you prefer). However, every single bar of soap I use does this, so I'm not holding that against it. I stopped using it in the shower and use it as hand soap (which works great). The other draw back is the amount of almonds? oatmeal bits? in it. As the soap melts the pieces become very prominent and I often have to dig them out to get to the soap again, because the lather is almost non-existent when the pieces are prominent. Otherwise, love this soap!!

        Comments about Porridge Soap:

I should probably start out by saying that I have very dry, eczema-prone skin. Which means that I am very picky about which soaps I buy. With such sensitive skin, I need a soap that contains (a)mild fragrance, (b) exfoliating power, and (c) moisturizing abilities. "Porridge" delivers on all three counts with flying colors.

This soap smells amazing! The soap has a rich caramel-vanilla scent that is noticable, but still light enough that it didn't irritate my sensitive skin. The pin oats that give this soap its exfoliating ability are soothing to sensitive skin, yet still get the job done. I garden a lot, and I always use this soap afterwords because it is so effective at getting all of the dirt off of my hands and nails. After using this soap, my skin always feels soft and moisturized. I didn't even have to put lotion on! (This is highly unusual for someone with skin as dry as mine).

"Porridge" has been a life-saver for me, especially during the winter. It has become my go to hostess gift- everyone I have given it to loves it. Although I bought this soap for my unusually finicky skin, I would recommend it to everyone. You won't be disapointed- I promise!

          Comments about Porridge Soap:

This stuff smells awful, in my honest opinion. Kind of like an old lady...it is very overpowering and after I use it my skin, hands, and my whole bathroom smell like this for the rest of the day.

Why did I give it 5 stars, then, you ask?

IT DOES WONDERS FOR MY SKIN.

My skin is awfully dry, especially in the winter. Since I am tan, it does this weird thing where the dry spots turn darker than the rest of my skin and it looks awful by the time summer arrives! My skin doesnt exfoliate well with a loofah or anything, so when I saw the chunks of nuts in this, I knew I had to have it. Its so gritty and is great on those rough spots - my knees, my elbows, my feet, ankles...etc and all of the darkness is fading!!!! My skin feels soooo soft and smooth and moisturized. It even helps with all of my ingrown hairs, I have way less. You may not like it if you have sensitive skin because once the soap starts washing away it gets even grittier and exfoliates even more roughly which I personally love.

It breaks apart in yout hands really quickly after you get water on it so I cut mine up into little chunks and the bar lasts much longer that way.

Also when applying I like to turn the water off and make sure my skin is still wet, lather up and scrub until i feel super exfoliated then I put the bar away and then wash it all off. I also put a catcher in my drain before each use because all of the little nut pieces get all over my tub and clog up my drain if I dont!

Lovely product if you can get over the smell...Id rather smell like an old lady than have my skin feel like one

This is like the third time I've bought this soap, its great! It's nice and milky when you use it which leaves your skin feeling moisturized, but its not heavy which is awesome because I hate heavy moisturizers. Yes, the oats leave a mess in the shower but just kick them into the drain when you're done. The smell doesn't last long but that's fine because if all the products I use left a scent, I would smell like a mixture of things that don't go together lol

                Comments about Porridge Soap:

I loved this soap! I tried Angel's Delight, The Godmother, and Snow Globe so far! Porridge is my favorite! It smells so cozy and is so mosturizing! It makes my skin really smooth! The oatmeal also exfoliates nicely. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because it does melt fast. You should cut your bar into smaller chunks to use at a time!

                  Comments about Porridge Soap:

This soap is absolutely perfect. It smells heavenly. Very sweet and caramel-y. When I use it while I shower, my entire bathroom smells delicious. The scent doesn't last long on my skin, but I don't mind. The bits of oat are amazing for exfoliating your skin and prepping your legs for shaving. The soap itself leaves my skin feeling silky soft. I don't mind the fact that the oats fall off; they wash right away. I ADORE this soap and is the only soap I will use. Absolutely perfect.

I love this product. It smells fantastic and is a great soap-body scrub. Please, please, please make this into a perfume. It smells so warm and inviting! I love how it makes my skin smell, but unfortunately the scent doesn't last long after the shower (which is why a perfume would be fantastic!)

Is there another soap that is similar to this one?

Porridge is my favorite soap! Around Christmas, they have a soap called snowcake, which is very creamy and yummy! Honey I washed the Kids doesn't smell quite like Porridge but for honey lovers, this is a must. One more is rockstar soap, a candy-scented pink one. Test these all out if you haven't yet!

There is no soap that is like the porridge in the sense of oats in the soap, but there are soaps with similar aspects.
                          Smell: HIWTK
                          Creaminess: Sultana, alkamaar
                          Exfoliation: Mud Flats, Sandstone
                          Chunks within: Noubar

Porridge is definitely one-of-a-kind, but if you are looking for something light and creamy I would suggest Sultana of Soap, as it has a similar light lather, as well as dried fruit to exfoliate!
