Soak and Float
How to use How it's made Inventors stories
Wet both hair and the shampoo bar. Glide the shampoo bar down the length of your hair about three times (right, left and back). Work into a lather and rinse thoroughly. Follow with LUSH conditioner if needed. Keep your solid shampoo in a cool, dry place between uses; we recommend using a LUSH shampoo bar tin.

Sort out itchy, flaky scalps

We’re just going to say it upfront: this shampoo bar smells like campfires, but it is incredibly effective at fighting flakes and soothing irritated scalps. Cade oil is what gives Soak and Float its distinctive smell; we use it because it works wonders against the microbes that cause dandruff, and it also works to alleviate bothered scalps that are dry and itchy. Lavender oil helps to improve the smell, and works its magic with marigold petals to soothe and clear up irritated scalps. If you have dandruff all you need to do is Soak and Float.

Features

  • Don’t be a flake: Dandruff happens; its how you wash it that counts. Use our cade oil and lavender bar for best results.
  • If there’s smoke: It must be cade oil. We use it in Soak and Float for its microbial effect and to soothe dry scalps.
  • Wonder oil: We use lavender in all of our ranges for its effectiveness at soothing sore skin and scalps.

Most regular shampoos & conditioners can leave residues in your dreadlocks causing mold to grow, thus making your lovely locks rather smelly. Luckily Lush has an all natural dandruff shampoo so dread heads with flaky scalps don't have to suffer. I had a terribly dry scalp and Soak and Float nearly got rid of my dandruff. It lathers extremely well, even with long thick dreadlocks.
I was kind of worried about the smell as scents do tend to linger with dreads. And it did seem somewhat odd at first, but after a couple uses I really started to love it. "Campfire" is definitely the best description.
I have no complaints.

I was very excited to try this after experiencing diminishing returns with Head&Shoulders, no matter how bad it smelled. Unfortunately, after a few weeks of using it every time I wash my hair (every other day, usually), my scalp is still itchy, and the flakes have only decreased a little bit. In that way, it's AS effective as my previous shampoo, so because it's no worse, I'm going to keep using it. It's as cheap or cheaper, use for use, and more environmentally friendly, so why not?

As a shampoo, it works great. After an unpleasant experience with a sample of Trichomania, I was STUNNED at how easy it was to get great lather out of S&F with just 3-4 swipes across my head. I left it on my scalp while I washed my face, as recommended by the sales associate, and it rinsed out very easily. I followed it with my regular moisturizing conditioner, and my hair was still shiny and beautiful as ever once it dried.

Bottom line: good as shampoo, not so good as anti-dandruff shampoo. Not for me, at least.

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

Dandruff can be from several causes:

A.) seborrheic dermatitis (from the yeast, Malassezia, which loves oil, hence why people with oily hair/skin/scalp tend to have dandruff) and

B.) dry scalp

I usually have Asian oily skin/hair/scalp with scalp itchiness from seborrheic dermatitis for which I used Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo which is an anti-fungal to control it. Neutrogena's T-Sal (salicylic acid) also helps control the flaking (but not the yeast).

Ever since being on Accutane/isotretinoin, my scalp has now dried up to the point of raining flakes and constant entire scalp itchiness. Because of the different cause of the dandruff (instead of seborrheic dermatitis), the typical over-the-counter dandruff shampoos, like Nizoral, T-sal, Selson Blue, or Head and Shoulders (all of which are anti-fungal/keratolytic), will not and do not work; in fact, they just make my scalp drier.

I've tried to moisturize my scalp with other "moisturizing" shampoos/conditioners, such as pure Japanese camellia (tsubaki) oil (incidentally 1 of the ingredients in Shu Uemura's hair oil), but they were of limited help.

Just 1 application of the Soak and Float, along with the Snake Oil Hair Treatment, however, noticeably decreased the itchiness by 98% and the flaking by 95%. After 2 uses, everything was totally improved!

Yes, it smells bad, but the benefits far outweigh it.

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

So I went to the shop a while back before leaving town to 1. get my hair re-henna'ed, and 2. talk to the wonderful ladies their about solid products for traveling as well as my scalp. I don't have dandruff, and the skin doesn't just flake off my head, it only comes off if I scratch and it didn't itch horribly or even that much, just annoying to scratch my head and have white stuff under my nails. I had been told years ago that I was showering in too hot of water and was basically char-broiling my scalp. Since then I've tried many things, including drastically reducing the temp of my showers(which is tourture to me), and nothing helped. There were a number of possibilities, bactirial, fungal, or as I later found out, due to some other medical stuff, psoriasis. Soak and float is advertized for its anti fungal and anti bacterial properties, but the tar in it is also a natural element used to psorasis.

I have been using it for about 3 week now and have noticed a substancial difference, mainly that my head doesn't itch at all anymore and there is no more white stuff under my nails. The smell isn't terrible, though at first in the store I thought it was overpowering. The scent also doesn't last long, which is actually a benefit to me on this product. Overall it is totally worth the few minutes of mild bleh, which after 3 weeks I barely notice.

Don't let the smell turn you off! I actually enjoy the smell but I can see how it can be offputting. Anyways, I'm pretty much consistantly flake free now! It's a miricle. Plus, I noticed that Soak and Float added some volume too but not too much! And my hair is also softer. I love, love, love this product!

Not to mention, I love having less plastic bottles in my shower and thus in the landfill!

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

I've tried everything. neutrogena T-gel, head and shoulders, tea-tree oil, natural remedies I'd found online. Everything. Nothing worked, so I had little hope that this product would. But honestly, for the first time in a long time, after using this shampoo, I can scratch my head flake free. It really does the job.
Despite the foul smell (it's really pungent), I applied a liberal amount, rubbing the bar all over my head, and it did its magic. To combat the smell, after I rinsed, I used a small amount Lady Godiva Shampoo as a second wash, and American Cream Conditioner. By the time I got out of the shower, my scalp was feeling cleaner, and my hair didn't reek of smoky campfires.

I was a little hesitant to buy this, since I figured that a bar shampoo might dry out my hair. Boy, was I wrong! It cleans thoroughly, which is really important for dandruff afflicted hair. You might think that it needs more oil and moisture to keep the scalp from flaking, but that's not true! The natural sebum in your hair actually makes it more itchy, not less.

I heat style my hair a couple times a week, and I haven't noticed any difference. I usually follow up with a heavy conditioner just at the tips of my hair. I actually just got back from the salon - my stylist told me that my hair is unbelievably healthy and not to change a thing!

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

I was hesitant to buy this because of the reviews about it stripping hair oils and since I regularly dye my hair with caca rouge I like to keep as much of my natural oils as possible so I can keep my color longer.

Recently all that oil has been building up and I finally ended up with dandruff (dandruff is actually caused by oily scalp not dry scalp... dry scalps are flaky but they're not the same thing)
I was wary to use anything but my solid shampoos but finally broke down and used a bottle of head and shoulders which usually clears things up for me after one use. I used it two days in a row with no improvement so I finally went to the Lush store and bought this.
Oh man I'm impressed. After one use my dandruff is gone, my scalp doesn't itch and I don't get crud under my nails when I do scratch my head. I followed with trichomania to avoid frizziness and I'm just so excited with the results, it's way better than I expected.

I don't care what the other reviewers say, I LOVE the way this smells and finally decided to rest the shampoo on my bathroom sink so I can smell it better when I come in the room.

Ok, so the smell is not that pleasing. They warned us from the beginning. I have scalp psoriasis and have used everything under the sun to combat the dry, itchy plaques. Nothing worked well. I picked this product up and have been using it every day for a month. My scalp is clear and is pretty much in the best condition it has been in years! I now use it once or twice a week just to keep everything in control.

This shampoo bar works wonders for itchy, flaking scalps. I have relaxed African American hair so I do not wash my hair often. I have had this bar for 8 months now and there is still quite a bit left. Before, I used Head and Shoulders for my dandruff and I realized that the itchiness and flakiness would return two days after I washed my hair. When I just started using the Soak and Float bar the dandruff would come back withing 3 or 4 days BUT with repeated use it started taking longer and longer. Now I can go a full 2 weeks without scratching my scalp out because of dandruff. I recently only need to use it once a month to control the dandruff. It does tend to dry out hair but a good moisturizing conditioner should help. A lot of people complain about the smell and honestly, I smells horrible. But I have come to actually love the smell now. It's not something I would wear but it definitely has a calming scent.

My hair is extremely difficult to tame and very thick. I had tried every other shampoo out there and my scalp would flake as soon as my hair dried. I tried this product once after an associate recommended it to me and I am now sold and a loyal customer.

It's so good that my brother was curious and tried it as well since his scalp is just as problematic as mine and now I've made a fan out of him as well. Since trying this product I've sold it to many friends and co workers that I know have been trying to find that solution to dandruff but hate using head and shoulders.

I bought this bar because I thought it would be a good alternative to that chemical-smelling dandruff shampoo at the pharmacy.

I've used it twice so far, and I've decided to return it. Whether it's effective in treating a flaky scalp, I can't tell yet. However, I do know that both times I've used it it's left my hair feeling "squeaky" as I've rinsed it out, which I've learned is a sign that it's striping my hair of it's natural oils. When I've styled my hair after my shower, it's been a lot dryer and frizzy than usual. Not cool. Also, the smell has pervaded my bathroom, and while not such a terrible smell, it's still SMELLY.

I bought this shampoo bar for my boyfriend since he was having trouble with flakes in his hair. Emily at the LUSH store in St. Louis helped me find the perfect bar for him. He uses it every day, and it has helped get rid of the flakes. Some folks might not like the smell, but I think it smells like campfires and inspires fond memories of my summer camp days. It's also a nice scent for a man who might oppose to something more flowery or fruity.

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

I just bought this shampoo bar and I am VERY impressed! I love all of the Lush products I've tried thus far and this is no exception. Though I originally bought Soak & Float for the scent alone (LOVE that campfire smell!), I quickly found how wonderful it makes my hair look and feel (and smell, hehe). My hair is soooo shiney and manageable and healthy looking. I LOVE THIS BAR!

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

This product is the best shampoo for flakey/itchy scalp! At first I tried lathering it in my hands and found that it didn't get everywhere on my scalp. To fix this problem I started instead rubbing the bar on my scalp and then working the shampoo into the rest of my hair. It works like a dream!
I happen to love the smell because I grew up camping and it reminds me of being around a campfire again! It is very strong, so if you aren't into the whole woodsy thing, this isn't for you.
Bottom Line: I love this product and will never use a different shampoo EVER again!

Comments about LUSH Soak and Float:

I had tried this after reading the reviews. I have psorisis on my scalp, and that, coupled with very dry wavy/curly hair, leads to bouts of unending flakies.

From even reading one review, it's obvious that the smell was going to be strong. After using it in the shower, it was less ick than it was smelling it straight up in the store. To tell you the truth, my hair is too short to even smell the strands, so the strong scent is mostly just the shower experience. I actually got used to the scent, and it's not as weird as when I first smelled it.

I normally shampoo 3 times a week and condition daily. I did try to use this a few days in a row to see if that would get rid of the flakes. After the first 3 uses, it seemed like my scalp calmed down; it didn't itch and less flakes.

However, I've been using it for a month. My flakes are worse than when I started. I keep the bar in a tin outside of the shower, but a layer of brown slime formed on the bar. Is that the cade oil that supposed to be fixing the flakies? Not sure, but when I swipe it on my head, the hair cuts it off and it floats down the drain.

It lathers very well. However, I'm not certain now if my flaking problem is due to traditional dandruff (especially since normal remedies haven't worked), or just severe lack of moisture. I will attempt to finish off the bar (80 washes should mean 6 months of washes, but I'm doubtful I'll go that long). Maybe I'll find something more suited to my hair type.

I just used this product for the first time and I adore it! The lather it creates was so impressive, I didn't expect it at all. I actually like the smell, but I can see how others wouldn't. First I put Snake Oil on my scalp and then washed it out with this, then conditioned with Retread. All of those products have somewhat controversial smells, but I love all of them. My hair feels soft and, once it dries completely, bouncy! I love LUSH's solid shampoos and, if you have flakes, this one is the best!

I have posted a review on this before. I raved about how it cured my dandruff. I have still been using this regularly and had to throw it out today. I thought I could handle the smell. Then, I thought I would get used to it. I was using it for a month and I still wasn't used to the smell. It smells so bad and is so strong. I could find a way to deal with it if my scalp didn't get used to this. It lathers well, that's the only positive thing about it. This dried out my hair so badly, and I have really dry hair and need conditioning shampoo and have to condition my hair even if I am not washing it that day. My scalp is now so itchy and I can't use this product anymore. I won't use it if my scalp has gotten used to it. I am going to try the Snake Oil once a week and see how that goes with using Rehab every other day.
