Soak and Float
How to use How it's made Inventors stories
Wet both hair and the shampoo bar. Glide the shampoo bar down the length of your hair about three times (right, left and back). Work into a lather and rinse thoroughly. Follow with LUSH conditioner if needed. Keep your solid shampoo in a cool, dry place between uses; we recommend using a LUSH shampoo bar tin.

Sort out itchy, flaky scalps

We’re just going to say it upfront: this shampoo bar smells like campfires, but it is incredibly effective at fighting flakes and soothing irritated scalps. Cade oil is what gives Soak and Float its distinctive smell; we use it because it works wonders against the microbes that cause dandruff, and it also works to alleviate bothered scalps that are dry and itchy. Lavender oil helps to improve the smell, and works its magic with marigold petals to soothe and clear up irritated scalps. If you have dandruff all you need to do is Soak and Float.

Features

  • Don’t be a flake: Dandruff happens; its how you wash it that counts. Use our cade oil and lavender bar for best results.
  • If there’s smoke: It must be cade oil. We use it in Soak and Float for its microbial effect and to soothe dry scalps.
  • Wonder oil: We use lavender in all of our ranges for its effectiveness at soothing sore skin and scalps.

Most regular shampoos & conditioners can leave residues in your dreadlocks causing mold to grow, thus making your lovely locks rather smelly. Luckily Lush has an all natural dandruff shampoo so dread heads with flaky scalps don't have to suffer. I had a terribly dry scalp and Soak and Float nearly got rid of my dandruff. It lathers extremely well, even with long thick dreadlocks.
I was kind of worried about the smell as scents do tend to linger with dreads. And it did seem somewhat odd at first, but after a couple uses I really started to love it. "Campfire" is definitely the best description.
I have no complaints.

I was very excited to try this after experiencing diminishing returns with Head&Shoulders, no matter how bad it smelled. Unfortunately, after a few weeks of using it every time I wash my hair (every other day, usually), my scalp is still itchy, and the flakes have only decreased a little bit. In that way, it's AS effective as my previous shampoo, so because it's no worse, I'm going to keep using it. It's as cheap or cheaper, use for use, and more environmentally friendly, so why not?

As a shampoo, it works great. After an unpleasant experience with a sample of Trichomania, I was STUNNED at how easy it was to get great lather out of S&F with just 3-4 swipes across my head. I left it on my scalp while I washed my face, as recommended by the sales associate, and it rinsed out very easily. I followed it with my regular moisturizing conditioner, and my hair was still shiny and beautiful as ever once it dried.

Bottom line: good as shampoo, not so good as anti-dandruff shampoo. Not for me, at least.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

This was my first solid shampoo and I wasn't sure what to expect but I love just about everything about it. The only thing that I'm not sure I love is the smell. It doesn't smell bad but it reminds me of head and shoulders smell and I don't like that smell. If you don't mind that medicated smell then you are fine I just thought it was strong at first. It lathered up great for me and it helped my scalp a lot! I am itchy all year round so this has helped improve my hair and scalp health.

I loved this product! It has a nice smell that is hard to describe. At first in the store I didn't have an opinion on the smell but after I smelt it a few times I began to love the unique smell. My scalp is normally very flaky and this totally solved all my problems!

I bought this because I was having some itchy scalp and flakiness issues. The great thing is, this product sorted out the itch and flakes after only a few uses. The problem is, I just can't get past the smell. It stinks up my whole bathroom. It lingers in my hair. And the really sad part is, the lingering smell is less campfire and more body odor-very unpleasant. I will most likely get another solid shampoo and use this one only as problems arise.

I quite enjoy the product and my scalp has been feeling better. However I arrived home the other day and was greeted by my wife who stated very clearly "I am tired of my room smelling like sausage". This would normally not be a problem if we had a small apartment but our house is neither small nor was the bathroom door open. The aroma of the shampoo bar is reminiscent of a smorgasborg of meats, my dog loves it but the wife... Not so much.

4 stars for healthy hair and scalp -1 star for the BBQ extravaganza in my bathroom and the rest of the house.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

I have had two bars of Soak and Float, the first I bought at a department store and the other ordered off the site. The first bar I used worked amazingly well; it was the first time I could wear black without seeing flakes on my clothes, and my scalp felt fantastic. This second bar that I'm using isn't quite working as well, though...it seems to dislodge flakes more than get rid them, and my scalp gets flaky again quicker than it did with the first bar. Wondering if I had a bad batch this time, or if my hair got too used to it that quickly. I ordered a third bar along with the second, and when I get to that one we shall see which theory holds out.

Either way, I *adore* the campfire smell that it gives off, and quick-return-of-flaky-scalpness notwithstanding it leaves my actual hair feeling very clean.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

I just bought this so I didn't want to give it a full 5 stars till I've used it for at least a few weeks. I have seborrheic dermatitis and was getting annoyed with chemicals and buying things that didn't always work. First off the smell, I'm used to using TGel and other pretty smelly shampoos for scalp issues so I don't mind it, but my husband LOVES it. He said it reminds him of a peat scotch, me I agree the campfire. After a little bit the smell does seem to dissipate and about an hour after I honestly can't smell much if anything.
I was skeptical about if it would really lather well but it was pretty remarkable how much it did. I did a wash with rubbing it directly on a wet head and also lathering it on my hands followed by rubbing it in, both worked great although less effort with rubbing directly on your hair. My hair feels lighter than normal and has more body as well.
I used this after using the superbalm and it got any greasiness out that the superbalm caused.
Price for price this is similar to other shampoos made for dandruff or skin issues but I feel if you get the whole 90 days worth of shampooing then it's a better bang for your buck. I don't wash every day, as any shampoo would normally dry my scalp even more, so theoretically this should last me close to 4 months.
So far my scalp feels so much better than it did with other shampoos I have used in the past. I've used it in combination with the superbalm so I can't say soak and float is the main reason for success but it has been a big contributor.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

I have very severe dandruff, so I needed something specific for fighting dandruff. I searched this product online and read pretty good reviews, so I decided to buy it. After my first wash I say that my scalp really improved! I noticed that if I washed my hair continuously it would give me a very dry scalp, but keep in mind, not flaky at all. Just super dry. I try to wash my hair every other day, so I don't have that problem.
Overall I approve 100% of this shampoo. Although it smells like burnt tires and fire camps... but if it helps I'll use it.

I purchased this product for my husband's bad dandruff. The shampoo has a very strong smell that does not linger after shampooing. I could hardly smell it on my husband's hair after. His dandruff has improved & his hair looks nice & shiny. I use it during the winter months when I have issues with dry scalp as well. If you can get over the initial smell this shampoo is worth it.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

Just like the description says, this smells like a straight up smokey campfire & the first day this was in my house, I almost threw it out because of how bad it smelled. Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of campfires but don't like the smokey smell to linger in my bathroom! Anyways, after a week or so the smell faded away (thankfully!) and I'm really glad I didn't throw it out becuase IT REALLY WORKS! My scalp gets very dry & flaky and I noticed a huge difference after only one use. My husband suffers the same problem, so much so to the point where he would avoid dark shirts because his flakes would sometimes fall onto his shoulders, and this product has been a life-saver for him! We each use it a couple of times per week and it does great. It was my first solid shampoo bar so I was a little leery of it at first, but you run it under the water, lather it back a forth a few times on your scalp, then put the bar down & later it and it creates a luscious, thick lather. Love! I searched for the perfect product for a really long time and have tried some very expensive high-end shampoos that don't work as well as this. Thank you, Lush! The product works so great I will forgive the smell :) oh! And I should add, I don't notice the smell linger in my hair afterward, so if that's something you're concerned about, it should be ok.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

Well first off, this is a solid shampoo, and I was afraid of how that would work out. I stroked it down my hair a bit (my hair reaches my lower back) and as soon as I started to lather I realized I will be hooked on solid shampoos for life (or a very long time at least)! It lathers sooooo well and you just have to make sure you don't let the bar get too wet and stash it away in a dry place when not in use.

Now on to this product's specific use. Chances are, if you're here reading this review, you have dandruff. I get dandruff every two to three months, and it only takes a week or two of using dandruff shampoo to get it to go away completely. But, with Soak and Float, 95% of my dandruff was gone after the first use (and my hair was softer as well)! With just a couple uses all my dandruff is gone and this product can go on the shelf for a little bit until my scalp decides to flake out on me!

My only, only qualm with this is that is smells bad. Mostly just as the bar, but you can smell it in your hair for a little bit. It does smell like campfires and I looove campfires, but I hate the smell they leave in my hair. But if you're the outdoorsy type you might love the smell! It's almost gone by the time my hair dries, but even if it wasn't I'd still use the product!

My husband has had issues with dandruff, and after seeing a friend's hair transform after using Lush, I decided to give Soak and Float a try. Yes, it does have a very strong campfire scent, but here's the good part, it's strong from the bar. When you wash and rinse and follow with a conditioner, you can barely smell it. (Made my husband smell my hair and he didn't mention campfire at all!) Plus, all the other anti-dandruff shampoos my husband used made him smell like a wet dog. I used it myself because I have a mildly itchy scalp and oily hair, I was surprised at how much lather there was!! I let it stew for a while and enjoyed the tingly feeling, followed with Jungle conditioner. Upon stepping out of the shower, I noticed my hair had a bit more volume. All in all, I love it. Don't let the smell turn you off, please!

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

This is by far the BEST shampoo for my dry, flaky, irritated itchy scalp. I've been using T-Gel for years and was always a little weary of using a solid shampoo, but decided to give it a try when I was in the store one days stocking up on my essentials. It lathers up surprisingly well and rinsed out without any residue. I have course hair that is dyed/bleached (yes, I know, not good for the scalp, but premature gray isn't good for the self-esteem either). My scalp has been feeling wonderful and hasn't been nearly as irritated, I don't know if I would use it everyday, but since I wash my hair about every 3 days, it works well for me. I also use Superbalm once a week, so between the two my scalp is a happy camper. And if you like the smell of campfire (as I do), then you won't mind the smell of this, but either way give it a try, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

Ok so ever since I dreaded up my scalp has been upset. I went from having an afro and doing cowashes only with shampoos just every 2 weeks or so to loc-ing up and washing my hair every 2 or 3 days with shampoos that can be drying.

Needless to say, I do get dandruff and it's so gross! Mostly in the front hairline area and it's itchy and just... bleh. So in my most recent haul I got this.

I've used it 3 times so far, 3 days apart each time, and it DOES WORK. Do you have dandruff? Just get this bar. Don't worry about the smell. I rather like it but whatever, even a bad smell is better than having dandruff and an itchy scalp.

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

Soak and Float is my first experience with a LUSH solid shampoo. My scalp is flaky because it's dry, after washing with my normal shampoo my scalp feels SO tight and there's flakes still! Today, I used this shampoo and I have no flakes, my scalp didn't feel tight or dry and I couldn't believe the lather!!!! I have extremely curly/kinky hair. Normally I need to shampoo twice just to get lots of lather, with this stuff the lather was unbelievable! I worked in my hair a bit because I didn't think a solid shampoo would lather so well. It didn't leave my hair feeling dry either.

The smell isn't pleasant, not pretty to sniff but it was manageable, I liked it, though! I'd recommended this!

Yes, the smell is TERRIBLE! But...if you follow it with Jungle and then wash your body with something strong like Mud Flats, you cannot smell the Soak and Float!!! I just got it in the mail today and decided to try it, so I don't know how well it works for my dandruff yet, but I can tell you the smell can be covered!

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

I have had psorasis on my scalp for 10 years. I have tried it all.....name any prescription from the doctor to help psorasis, I've tried it. Name any home remedy, I've tried it. I even have put that NASTY tar shampoo that you order from Amazon onto my scalp. I read the reviews about soak and float and the number 1 complaint is smell......the smell of this product is nothing compared to the Tar shampoo! Actually, I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it really was. Yes, the smell is campfire-ish, but it doesn't linger in your hair. It may hang around for a bit in your bathroom, but I didn't find it near as intense as some of the other reviews stated.
They way I use this product is I swipe the bar on the left side of my head, underneath my hair, on the right, and then on top. It lathers nicely so it is not necessary to continually rub the bar on your hair. I lather and massage it into the scalp only and then rinse. I follow up with LUSH's BIG shampoo because it adds shine and the sea salt also helps to exfoliate my scalp. Veganese is the conditioner I have been using, but may need to use something a bit more moisturizing because soak and float does seem to be drying. (only complaint)

If you have dealt with the pain of psorasis, try this. My scalp is clean, no scales, and most importantly, no pain! I no longer feel like I have to check the mirror after everytime I scratch my scalp! THANK YOU LUSH!

it lathered really well but smells odd. i wouldn't say it's overly offensive but definitely not of the usual pretty LUSH variety. i used Jungle and R & B to quiet the smell. i like that it's a solid shampoo and that i'm not using chemicals on my head to get rid of the itch. overall, i'd definitely recommend this if your scalp isn't of the happy variety!

Comments about Soak and Float Solid Shampoo:

I have struggled with severe dandruff and an itchy scalp for years, and it really gets bad during the winter. I decided to try Soak and Float as a more natural alternative to some of the other shampoos I've used. The smell is strong and I can definitely smell it at all times in my bathroom, but I don't think it is too unpleasant.

It lathered really well by rubbing the bar in my hands; I have long, extremely thick curly/wavy hair and it did not lather too well running the bar over my hair as recommended. I follow up with Happy Happy Joy Joy on my ends to avoid drying them out. My scalp feels great right after the shower but within an hour or so, the itchiness and flakes come back and the flakes seem more severe than before I started using this product.

I was really hoping this product would fix my problems, but unfortunately it did not. On a random side note: as a previous reviewer said, one of my cats goes crazy over my hair after I use this!
