An intense, layered fragrance inspired by the beat poets, with tonka bean and sandalwood combining in swirls reminiscent of espresso, French cigarettes and whiskey. In a basement café on the wrong side of town where the tourists won’t wander, the walls are throbbing. The band plays to back up the bard who’s pontificating, through the air, smoke laden, the hip cats supplicating. Above the squawks and the steam of the coffee machine, over the chatter and patter of the crowd who are gathered is The Voice of Reason.

Features

  • Inspired by the talkers and the bards: For those who railed and ranted for their generation; the ones that spoke for us.
  • Pulls you in: Sandalwood and buddahwood pull you into the club and let the jazz soak into your skin, senses and soul.
  • Transports you: To the heart of a movement that believes the page is long, blank, and full of truth. Write your own words. Be the Voice of Reason.

Comments about Voice of Reason Perfume:

This one broke my heart --I like unusual fragrances, generally ones that are spicy, earthy, or musky: patchouli and sandalwood are favorite bases, and I generally like gender-neutral fragrances. This goes on heavily smoky, as some other reviewers have noted, and goes through several changes on the skin. On my skin, the cognac/bourbon-y smell comes through after the initial hit of smoke, and then there are notes of leather and spice that fade into a softer, warmer scent over time.

On my skin, to me, it delivered on every promise made in the description. It seems like what Sartre or Kerouac might smell like: smoky and bookish and enigmatic, with notes of melodrama and bourbon.

I was disappointed by the fact that it comes on really strong when initially applied, but even with the fascinating transformations, it fades hard after about 5 hours -- it goes from "too strong" to "not there" much more steeply than I'd like. Aside from that quality and the fact that I'm wildly allergic to something in it and broke out into hives, it is my all-time favorite scent ever.

As with any scent, individual body chemistry plays a major role in how it smells on a given person, so YMMV.

This scent tells so many stories. As you wear it you almost feel like you are in a downtown basement studio filled with whiskey and smoke. Every time I wear it I find myself smelling my wrist to quickly escape reality. It's not for everyone that's for sure. I do feel that those who understand it will appreciate it.

Comments about Voice of Reason Perfume:

I tried this perfume on at the Lush in Union Square. Judging from the description, I thought this one sounded the most intriguing and unique. I'm glad I tried it before I went and bought it on the website! At first, the perfume smells overwhelmingly of barbecue sauce, mixed with a tobacco smell. A few hours later, the BBQ scent wasn't as strong, but was still there. I thought the tobacco element was interesting, but it was overshadowed by the barbecue scent.

It's really strong, too. I had to wash my wrist three or four times to get the smell to completely go away. If you think this is your thing, I strongly recommend trying it out before you spend your money on it.

Comments about Voice of Reason Perfume:

I decided to give Voice of Reason a try because I like scents that are a bit more masculine & because of the Sandalwood & rose that were listed as two of its ingredients. One of my all time favorite sandalwood-rose perfumes that had been made by another company had been discontinued & I'm still trying to find a replacement & thought Voice of Reason might be the one. I also like scents that are smoky, like a campfire or bonfire (like the Coal Face bar, for example).

Sadly, Voice of Reason was none of those things. On my wrist it smelled like BBQ sauce, & on a friend's wrist it smelled like beef jerky. The only positive was that it lasted most of the day which would have been great had I not smelled like a BBQ smokehouse. I kept thinking that the smell would change as it dried down but it stayed the same. No sandalwood or rose, no campfire smoke, just a BBQ joint.

Definitely not for me. This is the first Gorilla perfume that I've tried & I sent it back the same day. I plan on exchanging it for some of the smaller sizes of Lush's older Gorilla perfumes. Hopefully I'll have better luck.

Comments about Voice of Reason Perfume:

I'm not sure how to describe this scent. It is a very strong smoky smell, kind of like cigars, whiskey and a hint of coffee. I feel like I'm in a bar or pool hall when I put this on. I'm not really crazy about it, I figured I'd try the smallest one because the scent description intrigued me. But I don't really like the smell of smoke. To me I think this is a more masculine scent. It's creative and different, but its just not for me.

Comments about Voice of Reason Perfume:

I've never purchased a product that I didn't like from Lush, even with perfumes that I've bought without smelling first. However, Voice of Reason, one of two of the new perfumes I purchased was a big miss for me. The description made it seem like the perfume would have a lovely smoky tobacco smell with nice earthy tones. Instead of tobacco smoke, it smelled like a BBQ joint. I put it on my wrist and it smelled like BBQ chicken sauce. It was very bizzare. I had my husband smell it and he noticed it too. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is because that after wearing it for about a half hour the smell finally calmed down a bit, and it smelled a little less funky, but then the scent pretty much completely faded within a couple of hours so it's staying power wasn't there either. This was the scent I was most excited for, but it was quite disappointing.
