Ban the Seal Hunt
In March of 2009, we partnered with Sea Shepherd to protest the barbaric and wasteful commercial seal hunt that claims hundreds of thousands of seals annually; the 2008 hunt alone saw 275,000 seals slaughtered and left to rot on the ice. We knew we had to stand up against this blatant demonstration of animal cruelty, so we asked our customers and staff to sign postcards addressed to Prime Minister Harper demanding a ban on the commercial seal hunt in Canada. We also created a limited edition bubble bar in the shape of a baby seal for the campaign called ‘First Swim’, because many baby seals are slaughtered so young they haven’t even had a chance to go into the water. 100% of the proceeds from First Swim were donated to Sea Shepherd.
Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an International non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species. Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. Our shops and online petitions collected a whopping 47,696 signatures in favor of a federal ban on the commercial seal hunt in Canada! We sold 5533 First Swim bubble bars, and a limited edition Charity Pot during the campaign, totaling $37,000 for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
