ETHICAL BUYING At LUSH
We want to know where our ingredients come from and how they’re made. It’s the responsibility of our Creative Buying team to get out there to show us how this happens. Our buyers travel worldwide, visiting our suppliers to trace the ingredients, to meet the growers and producers, and ensure care for the environment and fair conditions for workers. They have been to Ghana, Morocco, Papua New Guinea, Vancouver, Costa Rica and the Colorado Rockies in search of the very best ethical and sustainable ingredients for our customers. We believe that what we buy should have a positive impact on the community from which they are harvested.
Simon, Head Perfumer and Creative Buyer has this to say about his job: "Often people tell me that my team and I have the best jobs in the company, running off across the world looking for wonderful ingredients that we can use in our products. And quite frankly they're right! For all of us on the Buying Team it's a privilege to not only visit these places, learn about the material and meet the people, but it's a privilege to be able to do something good when you come home. We strive to make every dollar we spend with a supplier count towards a positive change be it fair trade projects in Ghana or Indonesia to removing rainforest destroying materials like palm oil or our recycled plastic black pots. We work closely with our suppliers to develop great relationships that help encourage us all to work to better standards; we even go to their weddings sometimes. For LUSH where we buy our ingredients from is the first opportunity we have for influence. One of our first priorities is to ensure the material and the company doesn't test on animals, a policy we've run for over a decade. We always try to deal direct with a producer if we can to get as close to growing or making it as possible. We are also fortunate in what we don't buy, for instance unnecessary packaging. By selling naked products you can afford products with the best quality ingredients and we save the garbage men a job. Really, it's about mutual respect. Respect for you and your wishes to buy great products with ethical and sustainable natural ingredients. It's respect for our suppliers, who have a right to earn a decent wage and it's respect for the environment that can provide the ingredients. It's not always an easy path and we have had plenty of hurdles but it is ultimately greatly rewarding and led us on some great adventures, too!"
Heather, Head of the North American Buying Team, adds: "We can be very proud of the ingredients and all the other components we use as we strive to be an outstanding company with the strongest of ethics on sourcing. Our Buying Team is focused and committed to sourcing the best ingredients to create the best products. It's about bringing top value to our customers and aligning our sourcing strategies for the global business. What excites me about my job and the buying team is learning about and telling the stories of where we are getting things from. It's a great feeling to be able to partner with businesses that are aligned with us in philosophy and practices. I hope that you enjoy reading the ingredient stories and getting to know the buyers and that you'll think of all the places and faces that are part of the ingredients of your LUSH products. We will continue to deliver and develop a supply chain that makes good business sense without compromising any of our beliefs."
