The Dog Days of Summer: Tips to Keep You Cool

LUSH Life >> Tips and Tricks

The Dog Days of summer have arrived! Here in the Pacific Northwest, we wait all year for these hot, sultry days.

Finally we can put away our wooly socks and umbrellas and pull out our sunhats and sandals. Although the heat often leaves us feeling dog tired, did you know the term Dog Days doesn't actually refer to doggin' around? The term comes from Sirius, the Dog Star in Canis Major, the big dog constellation. It's so bright the ancient Romans thought the star added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of very hot weather. They named the hot period of time in which Sirius rose and set with the sun "The Dog Days". The constellations today are not exactly in the same place in the sky as they were in ancient Rome; the modern Dog Days begin on July 3rd and end on August 11th.

In honor of the beginning of The Dog Days of Summer, we've compiled some easy LUSH-inspired tips to keep you cool, tips to cool down the house, and five more for chilling out your feline and canine companions:

5 Tips to Cool Hot Bodies Pop into your local shop and pickup our favorite summer time treats to keep your bod cool!

1. Refrigerated toners: Pop your toner water in the fridge for a refreshing spritz when you come in from the heat outside. Our summer favorite is Breath of Fresh Air, which contains fresh sea water, rose absolute and aloe vera gel to cool and calm sun-kissed faces.

2. Cool water bathing: Have a cold water bath to lower your body temperature. Our favorite products for cold water bathing are Avobath Bath Bomb, The Enchanter Bath Bomb, Sunny Side Bubble Bar and Green Bubbleroon. Citrus oils like lime, orange and lemongrass are refreshing for the body and your senses, especially on warm summer days.

3. Cold Fresh Face Mask: Our Fresh Face Masks have to be kept in the refrigerator because they are preservative-free and full of fresh fruits and vegetables, clays and butters to cleanse skin. Take advantage of this chilled out treat on a hot day!

4. Chill out with Volcano: Volcano Foot Mask is packed full of cinnamon leaf oil, which has a cooling effect on the skin. You'll feel the tingly, cooling effect on your hot, tired feet right away. For an extra treat, pop it in the fridge and chill it before applying!

5. Frozen Shower Jellies: Take your favorite pot of Shower Jelly and pop it in the freezer for a wobbly, chilly treat. When you're ready to shower, take it out and rub it all over to cleanse and invigorate your body and mind. Emerge from the shower feeling revived and refreshed!

eco-friendly tips to cool down your home

5 Tips to Keep Your Home Cool We like to keep it green around LUSH. Here are some eco-friendly tips to cool down the house

1. Install ceiling fans to circulate air and cool your body. Fans use significantly less energy than air conditioners. Although they don't work to cool the air, they do make your body feel cooler.

2. Open up windows at night and in the early morning for cool air, then close the house up to keep out the unwanted heat.

3. Close curtains and blinds during the day, especially west and south facing windows that get lots of hot afternoon sunlight. Avoid using the oven during the hottest times of day, and turn off the dishwasher's heated dry cycle.

4. Dry laundry on the line instead of in the dryer, or if you need to use the dryer, run it early in the morning or late at night.

5. Homemade popsicles are the best because you can put in your favorite ingredients. We've come up with some LUSH-inspired popsicle recipes if you're in need of some ideas.

tips to keep your pets cool this summer

5 Tips for Cool Cats and Dogs They're our pets and we love them, but sometimes we forget how just how much the summer heat can affect our canine and feline friends!

1. Provide cats and dogs with fresh, cool water every day.

2. Take a few ice cubes in a handkerchief and tie them around your dog's neck.

3. Wrap an ice pack in a dish towel and put it in your cat's favorite spot, then lay him on it.

4. Cool your cat or dog by petting them with a cool, dampened towel. Gently stroke their head and back a few times a day.

5. Give your dog or cat an ice cube to eat, frozen peanut butter, or even better some puppy ice cream! Here's a simple recipe that'll make your pup happy:

  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 32 ounces/ 4 cups plain yoghurt

Blend, pour the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze. Wait a few hours and you've got a cold, yummy snack for your pup!
