Make it: Lush-inspired edibles

Fresh, natural ingredients are at the heart of our formulas at LUSH. Sometimes the resulting creations look so delicious that we're tempted to take a bite, although our recipes aren't designed to make a good snack; they're designed to be effective on the skin and hair. To keep our nibbly temptations at bay, we've taken inspiration from our delicious-looking products and adapted them into tasty recipes that will keep us from sneaking sly bites in the LUSH kitchens!

Vegan banana-oat cookies

One of the most appetizing products in our shops is our Oatifix fresh face mask. It looks like a delicious creamy bowl of banana oatmeal, but contains kaolin clay which would make it much too gritty to be an enjoyable snack! Save the face mask for beautifying your skin; we've taken the most delicious ingredients from Oatifix and made them into a tasty vegan cookie recipe.

Oatifix is full of ingredients that are fantastic for your skin and beneficial for your body. We use oats for their soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. They work wonders to calm the skin, though it's not only our skin that benefits from oats; they are also highly nutritious. Oats are a source of calcium, iron and vitamin B1 and promote healthy digestion because of their high fiber content. Fresh organic bananas act as a skin emollient and moisturizer in Oatifix. When we eat them, bananas give us loads of potassium, vitamin B6 and vitamin C. See the a-peel?

Made with delicious and nutritious ingredients, these cookies are the perfect snack to take with you on the hiking trails, or to bring to your next vegan-friendly potluck (be prepared to share the recipe after everyone's had a taste!)

Here's what you'll need to make about 24 cookies:

2 cups oats

2 medium bananas

1/2 cup olive oil

2 tablespoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup raisins

1 cup chopped apricots

1/3 cup chopped walnuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon


For this recipe you'll also need a big mixing bowl, wooden spoon, baking sheet and a cooling rack.

Step 1. Mash the bananas well with a fork, then add olive oil and vanilla and mix with a wooden spoon. No need for an electric mixer here!

Step 2. Add the remainder of the ingredients and mix well with your wooden spoon.

Step 3. Form tablespoon-sized portions and roll them into solid balls between your hands. This step is important to make sure that the cookies remain in one piece as they bake!

Step 4. Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius) for approximately 20 minutes. The tops of the cookies should appear slightly browned.

Step 5. Allow the cookies to sit for 5-10 minutes then transfer them to a cooling rack. 


Sexy Peel Marmalade

Our best-selling Sexy Peel soap is made with orange and lemon peels and grapefruit oil, making it incredibly delicious-smelling and beautiful to look at. We know from our childhood that soaps never taste good, so we took some Sexy Peel inspiration and decided to create a breakfast marmalade using orange, lemon and grapefruit!

We use orange juice and peel in Sexy Peel soap for its beautiful sweet aroma, but oranges also provide us with a fantastic immune-boosting dose of vitamin C when eaten. Spread Sexy Peel marmalade over toast at breakfast for a vitamin-packed start to your day! The lemon peel in Sexy Peel soap provides a gentle exfoliation for skin, leaving it soft and smooth. We've used lemon in our marmalade for its tart, zippy taste and gorgeous bright yellow rinds.

Making your own marmalade sounds complicated, but (speaking as a first-timer) it's really quite simple. I've adapted Eugenia Bone's recipe to make this zesty vegan 3-fruit marmalade. This is a perfect introduction to marmalade-making for the beginner, so let's give it a go!

Here's what you'll need to make 4 to 5 half-pint (250ml) jars of marmalade:

1 grapefruit

3 oranges

3 lemons

5 cups sugar 

Step 1. Peel skin from the fruit in large sections, and remove white pith from the inside of the peel (I scraped the pith away with a knife) and any remaining pith from the outside of the fruit.

Step 2. Cut the rind of one lemon and two oranges into small matchstick-sized strips. This should amount to about 1 cup of chopped rind. The remainder of the rinds can be set aside for composting.

Step 3. Remove the seeds from the fruit. This proved to be a little tricky- I sliced the fruit open with a paring knife and squeezed out the seeds. Be careful not to lose too much juice (or get squirted in the eye!)

Step 4. Blend the fruit in a blender or food processor until it's a pulp consistency. You should have about 5 cups of pulp.

Step 5. Combine your chopped rinds with 3 cups of water and cook over medium heat for approximately 25 minutes, or until the rinds are tender. Allow to mixture to cool, then add the fruit pulp and keep in the refrigerator for 2 hours (this is the perfect time to have a relaxing bath!)

Step 6. Transfer the rind, water and pulp mixture to a wide-bottomed pot (this allows for quicker thickening than a deep, narrow pot) and add the sugar. Cook over medium-low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The marmalade may foam up- ensure there is ample space in the pot so that it won't bubble over and make a mess! If you see foam, scoop it out and discard.  

Step 7. To test if your marmalade has gelled to the right consistency, spoon a small amount of the marmalade onto a plate and allow it to cool. If it's still runny when it's cool, keep cookin'! If not, you're done!

If you plan to use your marmalade right away, you can keep it in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.  For long-term storage, Sexy Peel marmalade can be preserved using water-bath canning. 

Water Bath Canning

What you'll need:

4-5 jars, lids and bands


Large pot with fitted rack- if you don't have a fitted rack, any contraption that allows the jars to be submerged in the boiling water but not touching each other or any surface of the pot will work. I placed about 5 canning bands on the bottom of the pot and sat the jars in them for processing.

Step 1. Sterilize 4-5 empty jars by submerging them for 10 minutes in boiling water (in the fitted rack or alternative). Remove with tongs (rubber-tipped are best!) and allow them to dry.

Step 2. Place the bands and lids in a heat-proof container and ladle in enough of the simmering water to submerge them. This will soften the rubber lid and allow it to form a seal on the jar.

Step 3. Fill the sterilized jars with marmalade and wipe any spills from the rim of the jar. Put the lid and band on to the jar and tighten.

Step 4. Immerse the jars in boiling water (using your fitted rack or alternative) for 10 minutes then remove them from the water using your tongs.

Step 5. Place the jars on a towel and leave undisturbed for 6-8 hours. To test that the jars have sealed correctly, unscrew the band and lift the jar by the edges of the lid. If you're able to lift it, the seal is good! If the lid comes off, you'll need to reprocess with a new lid.

Voila, you've made your own marmalade! These little jars make the perfect homemade gift for family and friends, especially if they're accompanied by a bar of Sexy Peel soap.
