Let's Take A Pregnant Pause

Did you know that Labor Day is exactly nine months from New Years Eve?

It isn't really, but your mind went to an interesting place, didn't it? LUSH staff working in our shops and answering our Customer Care line get asked a lot of questions by pregnant moms out there, or the people who love them and wand to find an appropriate, thoughtful LUSH gift for them. The amount of questions is understandable--and of course we want to help!

In this post, we’re delivering some answers to frequent questions about using LUSH while pregnant:

Are LUSH products safe to use during pregnancy?

LUSH follows guidelines set by the International Fragrance Association to ensure our perfume materials are well within safety levels for cosmetics’ use. So if used as they’re intended, LUSH products are certainly safe during pregnancy.

There are precautions to take, though, right?

Certainly! Much of the precautions about essential oils refer to ingesting them or using them directly on the skin, neither of which would apply to our products if they are used as they should be! The more common-sense precautions you take, the safer you and your baby will be, as well. Butterball may be just the right level of moisture for your itchy belly--but the bath could be dangerous if you run the water too hot. As for temperature, keep it to a luke-warm or slightly warmer, which won’t drastically raise the internal temperature of the amniotic fluid. While the product itself might not be harmful, you’ll always want to be smart about how and when you use it. The bigger your belly grows, the more off-balance you might feel, so it’s nice to have help settling into the tub (and climbing back out) to avoid slipping, and if you’ve used a product that has cocoa butter, like a Luxury Bath Melt, or a Body Butter, take care their residues are rinsed down the drain fully. Talk to your doctor, midwife and other caregivers about any concerns you have.

Are there any products to avoid?

Personal preferences run the range, as do how each woman experiences pregnancy. A tingly foot mask might sound great to one new mom, while the thought of even having to reach that far on her body might turn another one right off. It’s ultimately up to you--but at LUSH we try to be as clear and transparent with our labeling, and provide as much customer feedback on the products as possible on their webpages. This gives people the chance to talk about what worked - and didn’t - for them, which can help others avoid a mistake. If you have a strong desire towards trying something within LUSH, a craving, if you will, explore it--or ask for help finding something similar in a more pregnancy-friendly format.

I’ve used ________ for years! Why is it not working for me now?

Sometimes skin and hair feel and even look really differently during pregnancy due to hormonal changes going on. An individualized skin care consultation can also shed light on the larger picture of how skin is changing and even a few products that might solve some longer-term needs. Fresh Face Masks offer a medley of fresh, active ingredients to treat skin’s immediate needs, and achieve a feeling of balance and normalcy again. There are some that are more soothing and gentle, while others will actively scrub out excess oils and congestion. But all of them will enhance that “pregnancy glow”.

So what is most popular for helping avoid stretch marks?

Stretch marks are caused by skin literally stretching to accommodate rapid growth, or weight loss. So keeping it as supple and hydrated as possible will help with its overall elasticity and tone. While genetics and other factors can play their part in stretch marks’ formation and appearance, one of the most highly-regarded ingredients for moisturizing the growing belly is cocoa butter.

• We use this rich emollient in our world-famous Dream Cream, across the globe as a nourishing and conditioning cream for delicate skin. The cocoa butter and olive oil in Dream Cream combine with the extremely softening oatmilk, which is calming for any redness and itch, sometimes caused by the stretching of the skin, as well.

• For bathtime, a soak with Butterball will ease the mind of any stresses while also caressing the skin with slivers of melted coco butter. It’s a delicate and gentle way to add a bit of moisture to the tummy while perfuming the house and your entire body in heavenly ylang ylang.

Tiny Hands is perfect for toting on the go with you if your skin is dry throughout the day. Operating similar to our Massage Bars, but catering to hands specifically, Tiny Hands can be stashed in a tin and used to melt over dry skin whenever it’s needed. On the hands, on the belly--wherever a bit of moisture is needed, Tiny Hands delivers.

Does LUSH sell blocks of pure cocoa butter?

No, but have you seen our Massage Bars, which are basically that--but way better? These solid blocks of cocoa and Shea butters are blended with essential oils and other natural skin-loving materials. They melt on contact with skin, and glide over the tummy or wherever else needs a bit of moisture. Though the fragrance preferences come down to individual tastes, two of the mildest formulas sought-after during pregnancy are both Peace and Therapy. Peace has a truly chocolate-like scent and a nourishing dose of olive oil, to condition skin even further. You might also like the thoughts associated with rubbing “Peace” all over your baby. Therapy is highly suggested to help prevent stretch marks due to not only its cocoa butter base, but the elasticity-building power of neroli essential oil.

What else is popular during pregnancy?

A lot of women find being pregnant in hot summer months uncomfortable. While Labor Day might officially close the summer social season, the hot weather can still stick around for weeks. For a light cool-off every so often, use LUSH Toners to mist over your face, belly and body. Eau Roma Water, Breath Of Fresh Air, Tea Tree Water feel amazing especially straight from the fridge. Each one is an exquisite blend of botanical waters that will carry not only water but also essential oils’ properties into the skin. Some women love these to use during the labor process, as well, as a refreshing spritz to cool down from contractions, or just to help a delivery room feel or smell a bit more like home.

Ok--I heard LUSH make a breast cream? Is that safe to use during pregnancy? How about while nursing?

While Lovely Jubblies is a beautiful product to use on breasts during pregnancy, or after a baby is weened, we’d suggest avoiding it if a mom is actively nursing. That’s because it has such a strong perfume. Especially in the first few days of nursing, an infant relies on their senses of scent and touch more than anything else to bond with their mom. Because a primal connection is being established, heavy perfumes or lotions of any kind can really throw that process off. So until the baby is weened—or nursing is well established, most experts suggest nursing moms avoid heavy scents or keep them extremely minimal. (Lovely Jubblies is perfectly suited to the job of getting breasts back into tip-top shape once the baby is no longer nursing, by the way!)

We know that each pregnancy is unique, just like the babies produced in the process! A lovely way to care for the adaptations occurring in your body is to use the world’s finest, freshest ingredients in your cosmetics. Call our Customer Care line or visit a LUSH shop to talk about your specific needs - we love it when pregnant women (and their partners) belly up to our consultation tables!
