Take Our 7-Day Zero Waste Challenge

Posted In: LUSH Life >> How To

Think you can’t make a difference? We know you can! For the next 7 days, we dare you to make these small changes to your everyday routine that will have a big impact on the environment. Zero waste for 7 days? It’s easy! We’ve been leading the charge with unpackaged products like Solid Shampoos and Conditioners, Bubble Bars, Massage Bars, Henna and Bath Bombs. And the rest? They’re minimally packaged in post-consumer waste packaging. We even help you find new uses for them.

Take our 7 day challenge

Before you quit waste cold turkey, plan for success. Read the challenges below and be sure you have everything you need. For example, we found a simple way to make your own compost from Simple Homemade. Now, let's get naked!

The challenge: Carry a travel mug or reusable water bottle
Everyday millions of to-go cups and plastic water bottles end up in landfills. Buy just one coffee or water a day, and that’s 7 cups or bottles headed to landfills. Multiply by the number of people who frequent coffee shops and it adds up! Plus, plenty of coffee shops offer a discount for bringing in your own travel mug.

The challenge: Buy only what you need and buy fresh
Plan your meals for the week and buy only what you need to ensure that nothing goes to waste. Shop with a grocery list and choose only fresh ingredients (they’ll have minimal or no packaging) and they’ll be less likely to expire.

The challenge: Bring reusable shopping bags
Eliminate the number of plastic bags that end up in landfills by bringing your own reusable bags every time you shop. Whether you’re hunting for clothes, shoes or groceries, you won’t have a collection of plastic bags to toss away.

The challenge: Trade your takeout for homemade
This challenge has several benefits: first, making meals at home means you know what goes into them, so you can make them as healthy as you like. Secondly, there’s no takeout packaging to throw away, and if there are leftovers, you’ve got lunch for the next day. Just be sure to pack your homemade lunch in reusable containers.

The challenge: Go naked!
Buy only naked, unpackaged products this week. From fresh foods to cosmetics and clothing, there are lots of choices. We’ve got plenty of options, too. We’ve turned shampoos, conditioners, hair color, toothpaste and bubble bath into solid products, because when it comes to packaging, we believe that less is more.

We’ve also got reusable tins, Knot-Wraps or bags that make it easy to store or gift your products to keep them (and the environment) clean and happy.

The challenge: Go paperless
Before you print out that email, do you really need it? At home, place a “no junk mail” sign on your door. Most flyers, including the latest LUSH catalog, can be found online, so you can browse them right from your computer.

The challenge: Car pool, transit, or bike
Waste isn’t just the garbage that goes to landfills; it’s also the emissions we put into the atmosphere. Reduce your output by carpooling with coworkers and friends, use public transit, bike or walk everywhere with the power of two feet and a heartbeat.

The challenge: Give waste a second life
It sounds contradictory, but chances are, you’ll make some waste during the challenge. The point, however, is to stop waste from heading to landfills, so try composting food and yard scraps, donate unwanted clothes or toys, and repair broken electronics instead of trashing them.
