The story of our Fair Trade organic cocoa butter started a few years ago when we began working with the Peace Community of San Jose de Apartado in Columbia. The quality of the cocoa butter is absolutely gorgeous, but the community it supports is even better.
It's November 1, and not only do you get to flip to a new picture on your calendar, but it's also World Vegan Day!
World Vegan Day is a big celebration at LUSH. As advocates for animal welfare, we've been fighting animal testing for over 30 years. Currently 83% of our products are vegan, and 100% of our creations are vegetarian. Our products are made with fresh, ethically sourced ingredients, and never tested on animals. Our vegan products are made without any animal by-products, which means they don't contain eggs, honey, or lanolin. It can be challenging to create vegan products when there aren't alternative ingredients that give the desired effect, or in some cases meet our ethical buying standards. But we like a challenge, and for our vegan employees and customers we think it's worth it.
First coined 68 years ago, the term vegan refers to someone who tries to live without exploiting animals. There are multiple reasons people choose to become vegan and eat a plant-based diet. A vegan lifestyle also avoids wool, leather, silk, or animal products for clothing or any other purpose. For many avoiding meat, dairy, eggs and honey and animal derived foods is a health choice, as well as a compassionate one. Most people become vegan through concerns for animal welfare. Farming animals and the food resources required contributes to environmental problems; switching to a plant-based diet reduces the environmental impact. Famous vegans include: Bill Clinton, Jason Mraz, Chrissie Hynde, Thom Yorke, and Ellen Degeneres - that must explain her sweet dance moves. The vegan lifestyle is becoming more popular and that can only ...
We're not your average cosmetics company. For one, instead of having a board meeting we throw a week long festival and party with our LUSH family from around the world. We asked the participants what the LUSH Life was, and these are some of the answers...
What does the LUSH Life mean to you?
Fresh is more than a name or gimmick here at LUSH; it’s at the core of who we are.
We’ve always focused on creating innovative products with the best and freshest ingredients possible, and we’ll continue in our adventures in cosmetics to create inventive and effective alternatives to the ordinary.
LUSH products are freshly made by hand, but you probably knew that by now. Although there have been enough questions over the years that we know some of you are quite convinced that our products are made by Oompa Loompas! The factories where are our products are made are magical; but there are very real people behind each and every product. The face stickers reveal the very person who crafted your soap, shower gel, and body lotion.
When the fresh fruits and vegetables get delivered- including vodka, honey and chocolate our neighbors may wonder if we are in fact making delectable goodies, and not soap. The honey and chocolate gets blended into delectable goodies, but goodies made for your bath and body.
We like to use the finest ingredients and we have Buyers who seek to find the best honey, chocolate, seaweed, and even organic vegan stout from around the world. If you consider an ingredient good enough to eat, then it makes perfect sense that it would be good enough for your body. There is no need for us to employ squirrels to sort out the good nuts from the bad, we buy only the best nuts and nut oils from suppliers we investigate and trust....
There’s a lot happening here at LUSH! Our loyal customers trust that we take our responsibility to environmental stewardship seriously. We’re always thinking of new and exciting ways to a green our products and our company. Environmental consciousness is a company-wide effort that flows from each employee into our luscious handmade products and ultimately to your homes. So you can relax and enjoy your bath knowing that we are already thinking about all the hard stuff.
At LUSH, we are committed to reducing our energy load and investing in renewable technology to make clean energy affordable for everyone. Most of our products are sold directly to you with minimal packaging or entirely without packaging. Why is this? Well, packaging is a big problem in our landfills so reducing the amount of materials we toss out in the trash is a no-brainer. Packaging also requires a lot of additional energy to produce and transport. At Lush, we are reducing our carbon footprint by not using packaging at all and by using recycled-only or compostable materials for the packaging that we do have.
As part of our energy initiative, we are proud of our partnership with Bullfrog Power, Canada’s largest renewable energy producer. Bullfrog's green electricity comes exclusively from wind and low-impact hydro facilities that meet or exceed Environment Canada's EcoLogo standard for renewable electricity, instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear. A few other organizations alongside us in this partnership are the Canada Green Building Council, Greenpeace Canada, and the Clean Air...
