Nominations open for the 2013 LUSH Prize!

It's that time of year again - nominations are now open for the 2013 LUSH Prize.

“The goal of the LUSH Prize - to encourage the scientific, regulatory and campaigning communities everywhere to focus their attention on animal-free safety testing - is still as important as ever. The 2012 winners were inspiring and ground breaking across all categories. We hope that this year's awards will be able to build on that momentum”. - Katy Brown, LUSH Prize

Every year, it is estimated that more than 100 million animals – including mice, rabbits and rats – are used in testing laboratories around the world. In our continued fight against animal testing, we want to support organizations working to replace testing on animals with scientifically valid alternatives. A partnership with Ethical Consumer; the awards are judged by an independent panel of expert judges from the scientific, academic, and campaigning communities.

2012 was the inaugural year of the LUSH Prize, and we're proud to say that it's the biggest international annual prize in the non-animal testing sector. Last year, £250,000 was distributed to 13 groups across eight countries. Winners included scientists in Italy and the USA, campaigners in Japan and India, young researchers in Denmark and the UK, and a filmmaker in Canada. A further...

Kelly Goes to London for the 2012 LUSH Prize Awards Ceremony

Kelly, from our Robson St location in Vancouver, BC is a guest blogger this week. She's just returned from the LUSH Prize awards ceremony in London, and shares her experience at the awards and in the fight against animal testing (all while suffering from jetlag). Thanks Kelly!

I have always been an animal lover, and when I found LUSH my love and compassion for animals grew. The passion that LUSH shows towards fighting against animal testing is truly inspiring and goes beyond anything I have seen before.

When we launched our Fighting Animal Testing campaign, I approached it as a chance to really make a difference. I talked to anyone who listened, got signatures for our petition from whoever would lend their signature, and got my whole store team so pumped up they were doing the same. We ended up having almost 1000 signatures, which landed us in the top 10 results in the company. In June, LUSH announced they would be awarding a 250,000 pound LUSH Prize to an organization or individual who could make a change to end animal testing in the cosmetic industry.

Hearing about the cruelty in animal testing made me want to do more. I was angry and wanted my voice to be heard. Tricia from Retail Marketing heard my voice! She set me up with one of our Charity Pot partners, The Ghosts in our Machine. Their Facebook page describes it as, "The Ghosts in our Machine is a cinematic feature length documentary that illuminates the lives of individual animals living within, or rescued from, the machine of our modern world." LUSH was g...

The First Annual LUSH Prizes Have Been Awarded!

“LUSH Prize winners in 2012 have included scientists, campaigners, lobbyists, training specialists and young researchers. All these people play a vital role in the global movement to replace animal testing with methods that are now widely accepted to be both more humane and effective.” - Rob Harrison, Ethical Consumer

London was buzzing last night as we hosted the winners of the first-ever global LUSH Prize to help bring an end to animal testing. Every year,it is estimated that more than 100 million animals – including mice, rabbits and rats – are used in testing laboratories around the world.

WHY END ANIMAL TESTING

It is cruel - regulations regarding the anaesthetization and humane treatment of animals in testing laboratories are commonly weak or non-existent. Even where applied, these cannot eliminate the fear and distress laboratory animals experience on a daily basis.

It is ineffective - the physiology of animals is different to that of humans. Substances safe for mice may not be safe for humans and vice versa.

WHY WE NEED A PRIZE

In the 1980s and 199...
