Friends of the Orangutans engages communities in Indonesia to save forest habitats and re-plant degraded forests. We work in West and Central Kalimantan, where we've trained villagers in permaculture techniques, allowing them to make the best use of their land. We also work with villages and individuals to identify the best crops for food security and income. Tree planting, whether as a source of future income or reforesting of degraded community, is a key part of what we do. Several communities in both West and Central Kalimantan have benefitted from our work.

How We Helped

The project area that will benefit from Lush donations is the village of Tongka, in north Barito regency, Central Kalimantan. We have worked with the villagers to identify forests that belong to the villagers under indigenous land rights regulations. In the last few months of 2015, we have also identified key activities that will enable the communities to develop the area as a tourist destination to see some of the last remaining mature and extremely rare ironwood trees. Lush's donation will support the building of a guest house for tourists. The donation will also be used to further study the development of high value non-forest products including agarwood, dragon's blood and Indonesian ginseng.
