Osmanthus Absolute (Osmanthus fragrans)
Osmanthus belongs to the plant family Oleaceae. There are 30 different species of osmanthus and we use sweet osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans lour).
It is an evergreen tree that can range in size, but may grow up to approximately 12 metres high.
Its flowers grow in small clusters and are whitish to yellow-orange in color. Its tiny, dark fruits hold a seed inside.
The flowers are very fragrant and are used to produce the dark-coloured absolute through solvent extraction.
The absolute is very expensive and has a rich, fruity, almost apricot-like aroma with a slight tea note to it.
The flowers of osmanthus fragrans are occasionally used for the perfuming of tea.
