Persian Henna

We use the finest Persian henna, which has been used since ancient times to dye the skin and hair. The leaves are dried and ground into a powder and it is this, mixed with conditioning cocoa butter, which forms the basis of our Cacas.

Black Silk.

Henna and indigo are mixed together for this, the darkest of our four henna colour blocks, leaving hair soft and glossy with a blue/black sheen.

How deep is your love?

As with all our hennas, the more frequently you use Caca Noir, the more the colour will intensify. After the first use, expect your hair to turn several shades darker. However, to truly release your inner goth, keep applying every 4-6 weeks.

Indigo

Real indigo is made from the dried leaves of the indigo herb and has long been used as part of traditional dyeing techniques for its clear blue colour. The dye is activated by heat and deepens when exposed to the air, so leave your hair uncovered while the mixture is on for maximum results.

I bought it from the store.
Chopped it up with a knife into small chunks (used whole block, 11.4 oz = ~350 gms).
Used grater to grate into bowl.
Added 2 tblsp lemon juice to help color take.
Added enough very hot water to get cream, yogurt consistency.
Sectioned hair into 4 parts & applied.
Smell was okay a first, then after applying smelled like cigarette & mary jane.
Let dry uncovered for 4 hours (shouldve been 6).
Washed out grainy, but with lots of conditioner was easy to get out.
Hair was much stronger and sofeter afterwards.
Followed up with intense moisturizer.
The color was more brown because I didnt let the color settle as long as was supposed to.
Love the product.
A little pricey.
Should come in a powder form.

Having been an avid user of henna for quite sometime, my biggest gripe is that there is no mixing...which for some people might be a good thing. To get the true dye colors henna needs to be mixed with an acidic base (such as lemon juice or even a strong chamomile tea) and left to release the dye. After that application (it needs to sit on your head 4-6 hours after the several hours waiting for dye release in the bowl) a second application is done, this time using indigo--which dye releases much faster than the henna does, hence why the two aren't mixed to start with. That is the best way to get that true "blue/black" color or all black color that's fool proof. However, it's a lot of work to do the whole process, so this is definitely a viable alternative. Lastly--to anyone who doesn't care for the scent of henna (because I definitely do not) add a few table spoons of ground ginger or cardamon (or both) to your mix and it will almost completely nix the "earthy" smell.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

let me try to contain my excitement and tell you about this amazing product. i have bra strap length thin/fine curly hair that is very dark brown, but can lighten up in the sun. as i just returned from a summer in italy i wanted to darken my color without using chemicals that make my already thin hair thinner. i used 3 chunks of the block (half), chopping them up into smaller chunks, then mixing with luke warm to warmer water until melted and smooth. honestly i was not able to get all of the chunks smoothed out, so i will try harder next time. after the chunks turned into creamy paste, i sectioned my hair into four parts and slathered it all on, and i had plenty. i left it uncovered for 3 hours while i did some work and then wrapped an old t shirt around my head to sleep in. total i had it on for 11 hours. when i woke up i rinsed until i felt i got as much out as i could with just water, and then i shampooed and conditioned. im going to post a picture later, but it turned the PERFECT shade of black, very very natural. i haven't seen it in the sunlight yet, so i will report back, but by normal light standards it doesnt look like there is any red whatsoever, if anything a slight cast of deep brown, which is what i wanted. natural black. my hair looks so much thicker, shinier, and healthier then i am used to! it also did not loosen my curl like i was worried it might. i am in LOVE.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I have been using Lush products for years and have been coloring my hair auburn with henna longer than that. However when I got the itch to return my hair to its natural espresso brown/black I decided to try out the Noir. WOW is all I can say. The color is wonderful and rich and the coco butter has been great for my hair. All in all I LOVE this product! I have waist length medium thickness hair and used two blocks for my initial coloring.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I have black hair that has gotten lighter after exposure to the harsh NC sun. I wanted my black hair back but did not want to use a chemical dye. I found this product by Lush and thought I would give it a try. I cut the Caca Noir block with a knife. It is very easy to cut into very thin, almost shaved slices. So you really don't need to use a grater. I mixed with very warm water until it was a brownie batter consistency. I covered my kitchen floor with a cut open garbage bag and went to work. I really slathered it on, working it into my hair and making sure it coated every inch. Word of advice, wear gloves!! I left it in for a little over 8 hours (I slept with it in). I could really tell a difference the next day when I rinsed it out. The rinsing does take a bit of time but really isn't that bad. My hair has a lovely natural black color to it and is very soft and shiny. I was not crazy about the smell but I will take the smell and a bit of messiness over a fake looking chemical dye anyday! Great product Lush...can't wait to do it again!

I have dark black hair with a few noticeable grays and I bought this henna hoping that it would help cover them, What a waste of money!! The first time I left it on for about 3 hours and it had absolutely no effect. I went back to the shop and asked the lady there for directions and she said to leave it on for longer to cover grays, typically 8 hrs. I left it on for 12. When i rinsed it off, the results were the same as the first use! Now I am left with half the bar and I definitely do not intend to use again. Natural henna is definitely better!

First of all, you have to grate it and add boiling water, that's just a weird process. After applying it, you notice a funky, grassy smell. A couple of people will probably let you know about it too for the next few days. The color doesn't stay, isn't dramatic, and this isn't the product for you if you want black hair.

Just tried Caca Noir for the first time. It was messy, but worth the effort. I found it helpful to chop it up in a food processor for a smooth consistency. I left it on my hair for 12 hours, under saran wrap. My hair is very dark. It didn't change the color, just made it a lot more shiny. It also blended my grays nicely, turning them a coppery brown color. This product is ultra-conditioning. My hair hasn't felt this healthy in a long time. Thanks Lush for offering an alternative to chemical hair dyes!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

This was the first time I used Caca Noir. After being tired of the brassy color my hair had turned from previous dye-jobs, I am truly happy with the results. I put the product on my hair and went to school with a bandanna wrapped around my head, allowing it to sit for roughly 5 hours.

Although some say it smells horrible, I didn't find it to be that bad--sort of a funky earthy-tea smell. It won't bother you if you use products or herbs that smell similarly. The mud-consistency of the henna turned very hard over the next few hours, but melted away without much trouble at all.

I did use a conditioner simultaneously as I rinsed it out, which helped in detangling my hair as well as getting the excess grit out. It felt like my hair had matted at first which was a scary sensation, but after thoroughly rinsing it, it's become very manageable and soft. I love the color, although my hair soaked a lot of it up (a little over four of the bars), so I can't wait to see it as it lightens up. I will definitely buy this again, and maybe even stockpile it for the future.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I've read every review on here and decided to give it a shot. I've been using for months now and have had amazing results. My hair is naturally dark but showed signs of damage and would turn lighter brown to almost blonde at the tips. The henna completely covered the light brown damaged hair and transformed my hair into a healthy, shiny, and very dark black color.

here's my ritual when it comes to henna..

In a spray bottle mix eucalyptus oil with water and spray your hair before you apply the henna. Use a cheese grater to break the henna down, try using two of the blocks to start..slowly add boiling water and a combo of coffee or black tea (coffee can leave a greasy residue) it should be a yogurt consistency so start off slow! Section your hair before you apply, saves time and makes the application a breeze. I'd leave it on for at least 6 hrs..the 1st time it won't last as long, but the longer you use it the longer it lasts. I'd break up the block so you can use it 3 separate times each a week apart. This is best to do when you don't have anything planned. Honestly it's easiest just to wear a shower cap and keep it on over night! While applying, if the henna starts to dry add a little more hot water. Keep spraying the eucalyptus mixture on your hair, it helps the henna stay moist and stick to the hair. I usually rinse it out the next day with just water then actually wash my hair a day later. However, the cocoa butter and coffee can leave your hair rather greasy so this might not be suitable for going to work or out.

Ps. Henna can be rather messy so make sure to put something down on the floor and wipe up the mess as you go to avoid stains!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

After reading several reviews, I finally decided to try this product. I was skeptical at first, because I wasn't sure if it would really produce the results I wanted. I have natural bra strap length, dark brown hair that is quite fine. I was hoping to achieve a deeper color.

The process wasn't quite that messy for me because I took the proper precautions. I left caca noir on my hair for roughly 5 hours and the results were great. My hair was noticeably darker and quite shiny. I did not include any additives like vinegar or lemon juice. I also did not saran wrap my hair.

I feel as though the overall health of my hair is much better after using this product. My hair seems to shed a lot less. I only took off one star because it is quite a tedious process! Although my results were great, I wish I would have purchased caca brun instead. I may give that one a try in a few weeks.

All in all, I would definetly recommend this product.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

There's two important things to keep in mind when using this product.

1.) Preparation. The process is a bit messy but if you set aside a day to color your hair, and properly cover your "workspace". It's relatively simple.
2.) Proper expectations. Do NOT expect to go jet black with one use.

I love this henna! I got just what I wanted. I've always wanted to go a few shades darker without being dramatic and I needed something to nix the grays I was starting to get. Noir delivered on my expectations. My grays are less noticeable, not completely covered, but they are a light-medium brown. My milk-chocolate colored hair has firmly transitioned to dark chocolate. I love-love-love the cocoa butter too, it made my hair few so nice and my dandruffy scalp liked it too. Though this may not be the product to use for people with oily hair.

I found it pretty simple to use and followed the instructions on the printed sheet that came with it. I mixed it to the consistency of heavy cream and glopped the whole mess on top of my head, uncovered for 6 hours. For the first 1 1/2 - 2 hours, it was a bit drippy, so I was dabbing my neck and face with an old rag. After that though, it was properly thickened and I could move about the house without worries of flicking henna sludge everywhere.

The mess was easy to clean up. So long as you wipe it up right away with a damp rag no surfaces were stained. All the towels and rags I used to dye and clean came out fine in the wash. No stains, but I did use three of those "dye-catching" laundry cloths. The henna grit in the tub was easily rinsed away with a blast of the shower head. (No scrubbing here!)

My only complaint is that it does take a lot of rinsing to get all of the henna grit out of your hair and it does feel a bit nasty. Kinda like potting soil stuck to your hair. I found using a wide-toothed shower comb while rinsing helped to get the grit out.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

Ok, great product. I typically use just pure jenna for reddish color to my dark, 4a/b, AA hair. Pure henna smells like cut grass/dirt which is what the Caca noir smelled like. Caca noir is equally messy to mix. For those who have never used henna, the reddish color it imparts is temporary (few weeks) but lasts longer and longer the more you henna. Caca noir is henna with indigo, the dark blue black color it imparted to my hair lasted about the same amount of time as my pure henna-just a few weeks. Stop complaining about how long the color lasts AND the color you get AND the smell. The one thing about henna and indigo, you really never know what you are going to get until you get it. Its nature is a semi-permanent natural dye. It is actually very conditioning. I like this product, less drying then my typical henna treatments. I direct you to a great henna resource, [@] I will definitely be using this again and again!

I already have pretty dark brown hair and wanted to see if this product would make it darker. It is enough of a difference for me without going totally black (however, I did think maybe I would get some of those indigo hues and it didn't work in my hair).

I grated half of a bar for my hair, which is rather thick and a little below my shoulders. Then mixed it with hot water into a thick paste. The application was incredibly easy and it hardened nicely so that I slept with it all in my hair uncovered--the whole application was about 10 hours. The smell was fine during it, just herbal and grassy. The smell and shine afterwards is awesome, I love it. It was just a little difficult to take out, but that is to be expected with mud so all in all I was happy! Better than any over-the-counter dye or henna.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I'm Asian and my hair is mid back, naturally thick, straight, shiny and black. At the end of the winter, I noticed that my ends were looking a little dull, so after some online research, I went ahead and ordered the caca noir.

After it arrived, I started reading more online posts, and I got a bit worried about how difficult everyone was making it sound. So, I stuck my cube of caca under the bathroom sink and went about my business. Finally, 2 months later, I couldn't stand my hair anymore, so I waited until I had a free day and went ahead and DID it. Here's my experience.

            1. 7:00 am Was worried at how hard the bar appeared to be. But it was very easy to chop. I used a plastic cutting board and a big knife to chop 3 segments. Easy, no mess.

            2. I put the chunks into my food processor to get a fine grind. Again - easy. No mess - and my food processor cleaned right up, no smell, no staining.

            3. I now had a fine powder, I put it into a pyrex bowl and started adding warm water until it turned the consistency of toothpaste. Waited 5 minutes for all the water to get sucked up and then added more water til the consistency went back to toothpaste. Repeated 4 times. The 3 segments turned into about 4 cups of henna paste. I could already tell that this was too much for me. I should have only used 2 segments - but oh well, it was the first time.

            4. Headed up to the bathroom with my bowl of toothpaste-like henna.

            5. Put a dark blue bath towel on the floor and had a dark blue hand towel in arms reach. Used Neutrogena on my ears and hairline.

            6. Put on the gloves that lush included.

            7. I then put the pyrex bowl on the floor and crouched over the top of it. I dunked my hair directly into the bowl and then started scooping hand fulls of the henna and just mashed it into my hair. No effort to do anything fancy. I just wanted to saturate my hair completely.

            8. Henna is NOT like regular buy at the drug store hairdye. It's not like it touches the counter and instantly stains it. It needs time to develop. I found this out, as there were spots dropped on the floor and on my shoulders, I easily wiped these away with my hand towel.

            9. Finally stood up and put my hair in a big bun with an elastic. Then I took the left over henna and squished it into my head. At this point, I started feeling a teensy bit worried because my hair was looking like a huge muddy tangled bird nest. But too late to turn back.

            10. I was right - I had made too much henna. So, I packed on as much as possible and then rinsed the rest away down the drain.

            11. 7:27 Didn't even take 30 minutes. I went downstairs and made myself breakfast.

            12. The henna dries and starts to get flakey, so don't touch it if you can help it. It also gets heavy, but I found it bearable. I spent the day catching up on bills, watching tv and really using the henna as an excuse to be lazy. (i.e. asking the hubby to bring me tea since my henna was so heavy. ;P)

            13. 5:00 pm Time to rinse out. I was worried again because everyone said it was so hard to get out. And I was worried that I would end p with a huge matted mess.

            14. New blue towel and I enter the bathroom. I turn on warm water, but not the shower. I crouch next to the tub, and stick my head under the faucet. The dry, hard mass on my head instantly softens.

            15. Within 5 minutes, the henna is all melted off, so at this point, I take my ungloved hands and start just running my fingers through my hair and massaging my scalp. My fingers run through my hair like it's silk.

            16. You can feel the gritty henna pieces in there, so just work your hair until the water runs clean.

            17. At this point, I hopped in the shower. It looked like there was some staining in the tub, but I just ran some water over it and rubbed it with my thumb, and it rinsed right off.

            18. No shampoo and no conditioner. I just rinsed again and soaped up my ears and hairline.

            19. 5:34 pm Out of the shower, clean up is done and put my hair up in a towel.

            20. Hubby says, let's go out to dinner, so I go upstairs to try to figure out what to do with my hair.

            21. It feels very soft, but heavy (this is the residual shea that everyone is referring to). Can't do anything about it now, so I slick my hair back into a bun and head out. Hubby comments that the slick back hair looks nice.

            22. Home from dinner I take my hair out of the bun and realize it's still kind of crunchy. I imagine this to mean that there is still some left over henna doing it's magic even though I can't see it. I put a towel down on the pillow just in case and go to bed.

            23. Next am. No henna in the bed, towel is clean, hair is soft. Feels like I just got a MASSIVE moisturizing treatment, which I guess I did.

            24. I've decided not to wash it with shampoo until day 3.

The color is not that dramatic on my head, but I didn't really expect it to be. No real blue, but it feels great. All the dry brittle ends feel soft and healthy.

Will definitely do this again. In fact, I just ordered 2 more bricks.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't see any blue sheen like I've gotten before with a blue cellophane wash or with a stain.

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

This is a fantastic colour product! I have very long hair that is naturally dark brown with some black that has been chemically treated with professional colours in the past and rebonded in the lower half. I decided to try this to see if I could switch from professional hair colour, which although very gentle is slightly damaging to the hair. Application and processing was not easy and the product has to sit on the hair for several hours to achieve full effect. I left mine on six hours and then removed in the shower via much rinsing and two rehab shampoo applications. The first thing I noticed was the awesome texture and conditioning.. then the colour. I got an even, neutral black shade from root to tip, despite differences in hair porosity. No damage or irritation... and my hair feels and looks stunning. I am SO happy I tried this and will not go back to conventional colours in my own hair =D!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

Henna - real natural henna - is one of the best things you can put in your hair. I grew up in an oriental society, so I've seen women use henna a lot. I've used it myself before.

I have black hair with a few natural brown highlights, so I wasn't expecting a big change. People who are used to chemical hair dyes can sometimes be disappointed when they use henna, especially if they have natural dark hair. I just wanted mine to darken a bit and I was intrigued by the promise of a blue-black glow. I also know that good quality henna makes your hair look incredibly thick and feel wonderfully soft.

If you haven't used it before, you'll probably be shocked by the mess. Even I had forgotten how annoyingly messy it can be. I prepared my bathroom and was as neat as I could be, but when I rinsed it off it splattered all over my shower curtain and tub...it came out pretty easily though.

I had left mine on for five hours and wrapped my head with clingfilm - I know you're supposed to leave it to airdry for the blue tint, but I didn't want dry henna flaking off around my apartment. The result wasn't bad color-wise; my hair looked very black with less of the natural brown highlights. It didn't have the blue tint but I'll put that down to not air-drying and also the fact that you're supposed to use henna more than once regularly to build the color. But my hair does feel excellent, so I will use this again.

I would probably make sure I stirred the mixture more thoroughly and add more water next time (it was bit too thick and lumpy) and I would section my hair more before hand to real coat all of it. I would also apply the mixture hotter, as this helps get a richer color. For my hair - mid-back length - I needed 3 squares. Have one of the Lush hair masks - I used the jasmine one - ready to help rinse out your hair at first as it will feel very hard and brittle. Have plenty of conditioner and shampoo - I washed my hair about 6 times consecutively to get it all out. It was worth it though, because even though I used a white towel to dry my hair later, there were NO stains, it was all out.

I'll be trying the Marron bar next to work up a more auburn color for summer!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I love lush henna. Seriously. It saved my hair! I'm sitting at the computer with my head covered in caca!

I'm almost 49, and when menopause started, I started losing hair, and my natural color started to fade. My once plentiful, bouncy hair had become thin, lank and mousy. NOT GOOD. I don't color or process my hair in any way, and really, really didn't want to cut my long hair into the standard middle age helmet cut in order to make it look like it had some body. I know, I know, find a good stylist, but still.

So, I started using Lush Henna, and it really does work. My hair has body and shine again! The color is fantastic and brilliant. It isn't frizzy or thinning anymore, either. It's the middle of February and the temperatures have been below 0 F, but my hair, for the first time EVER in cold weather, looks fabulous.

So if you're a caca noob, do not despair. If your hair is in rough shape, or you want a big color shift, It takes a couple of months of using this stuff for it to really, really kick in, but once it does, it's all just maintenance from there on out.

If, like me, when you start using this, your hair is a disaster--just have some patience. Starting out, I had to do the whole process twice in one month for it to really, really work. This is what I did:

              1) I used two chunks out of the block for each application. That meant one block gave me three treatments. That's not too bad, price wise.
I pounded the henna into a powder in a plastic bag and put it in a pyrex bowl over some hot water in a large pan. I poured very, very hot water over it, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until it was a creamy, not gloppy, consistency. Then I used a latex covered whisk to get the consistency smooth and let it stay on the stove for about half an hour.

              2) I poured the hot henna, into an old ketchup bottle using a funnel, and put the lid on it. (A Lush shower gel container will work, too!)

              3) I go into the bathroom, and leaning over the tub, I start squirting the henna onto my hair, and work it through with my hands, from scalp to ends. Rubber gloves are very handy for this step!

              4) Wrap my head in plastic wrap and a towel.

              5) Leave it on for at least four hours!

              6) Rinse in the kitchen sink with the spray attachment before going in the shower--it really helps to do that! And use cool water, not hot, to rinse. I don't use shampoo until after all three applications, I use conditioner. And again, use cool water. Obviously, timing is key, and you don't want to need to be somewhere looking fancy in the middle of all this.

So I did that twice in one month. 8-P Yup. But it saved my hair.

Now it's just once a month maintenance, and one full block of henna will last me three months. It is fabulous. Okra is a great conditioner for my henna hair, and so is Veganese. Gentel Lentil or Reincarnate seem to do the best for me shampoo-wise.

              Happy Henna-ing!

Comments about LUSH Caca Noir Mama:

I have never colored my hair with henna before, only with those chemical dyes. I've colored it black several times before, and I needed to cover up my mousy brown roots. The regular dyes have been really harsh on my hair, it has been straw-like and super dry, and after researching a bit on the web I found LUSH's henna color - I picked it because it sounded easy to use, and it promised to moisturize the hair. Well, moisturize it did! My hair is SUPER greasy now lol, I have colored it two days in a row. I'm planning to do the last coloring tonight. Two blocks is enough for my thin, a little over the shoulders-long hair. You should get someone to help you apply the henna if you're not used to dying your hair by yourself! The henna paste I mixed was somewhat thick and like cake batter, and it was quite hard to get into the roots, it was REALLY REALLY messy. Actually I didn't get my roots colored at all the first time. After coloring twice and with the help of mom, my roots are now almost covered :) And the color is really black! I think I have a little bit of blue sheen in it. I sat with it for about 8 hours each time. What is really important to do is to warm the henna nice and thoroughly to get rid of all the lumps, I smashed the blocks with a hammer in a zip lock bag beforehand. On the first coloring the henna wasn't really that warm, it was rather lukewarm, and it started crumbling almost at once when I put it in my hair. So yeah, the henna was all over my bathroom floor as well. A real mess! It's not that messy if the henna is really really warm. I wrapped my hair in plastic also, and only rinsed out with warm water. It takes some time but it's worth it, I think shampoo would be too harsh on the color. The smell wasn't too bad, I added a couple tbsp of cardamom and I used a tbsp of lemon juice or white wine vinegar for each batch. My hair is quite black now and I am looking forward to coloring my hair with henna in the future, instead of them chemical dyes!

I wanted a different type of product because Im a swimmer and normal chemical dyes just damage my hair even more.

I followed all the directions, kept it one for 6 hours. Washing it out was a bit difficult and made a mess of my shower.

But the color is great. Dark and shiny, got rid of all the red in my hair just like I wanted. Smell is still there after about 5 washes though.

I love this product! L.O.V.E. I used the Brun in the past, but it made my hair too red, so I tried to Noir, and I love it. It did not get black, but if I left it on longer (I did 5 hours), or did a double treatment I have faith that it would have. I was looking for a deep dark brown, my natural color that I am trying to get back to, and that is exactly what I got by using half the bar mixed with instant coffee. But the best part about using Lush Hennas is the cocoa butter. The shine on my hair is amazing! Nothing has ever made my hair so healthy and shiny and soft. I have extremely curly hair, and I live in Florida, so it is frizz central, but this makes for perfect shiny ringlets that people notice! Countless people have stopped me in stores or at the park with my kids and ask me what I use, and I always sing the praises of Lush! I hope you never stop making this product because it is wonderful!

I grew my artificially colored hair out for this opportunity. My expectation was that this color would deepen and darken my already brown hair. I boiled some blueberry tea bags then mixed it with two squares of crumbled caca noir. I had so much fun applying this green muddy color to my hair :) I let it air dry and wrapped my head in a scarf for a bike ride and some beers, and 5 hours later washed it out at home. I am very pleased with the effect!!!! My brown hair is now toned with deep purple. I am very pleased and plan to deepen the color with a few more applications. Thanks, Lush.
