Iowa Friends of Companion Animals works to address the inhumane conditions in the commercial dog-breeding industry. Iowa ranks second in the number of large-scale breeding operations (also known as puppy mills), which collectively house 15,000 adult breeding dogs statewide. Many of these dogs are confined to cramped wire cages inside dimly lit makeshift buildings, with little or no protection from weather extremes, no veterinary care, no exercise, and little to no socialization. They suffer needlessly and often produce puppies with health and behavioral disorders. Iowa Friends of Companion Animals is working to raise public awareness and get better legal protection for these dogs.
