The mission of the Jungle Mamas Program is to reduce maternal and infant mortality by empowering women and communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon to ensure safe births and protect the health and well-being of the Achuar nation.
To accomplish this mission, the program trains and employs Achuar women to become Community Maternal Health Promoters. During their training, the health promoters learn all the basics of maternal health, including the proper use of life-saving birthing kits. The health promoters then fan out across the territory – walking for hours, village-to-village – to reach nearly 7,000 Achuar people.
