Keepers of the Athabasca Watershed Society

We are First Nations, Métis, Inuit, environmental groups, and Watershed citizens working together for the protection of water, land, air, and all living things today and tomorrow in the Athabasca River Watershed. We work to build awareness of health and environmental risks of extreme oil extraction and pipeline developments throughout the Athabasca Basin, and key related issues including: extreme fresh water use for in situ development; water contamination in underground aquifers; little or no monitoring of SAGD/in situ extraction, cumulative effects, climate change, ignoring human health and human rights, Indigenous rights and governance for land, air and water use.

How we helped

Lush helped us create the Healing Walk with our other partners. This incredible feat entailed an annual walk around tailings ponds and other extreme oil extraction infrastructure at the heart of the bitumen industry in Northeastern Alberta, over a period of five years. Lush also helped to produce the Healing Gathering for the Land and Water, which was held July 28-31, 2016 on Fort McMurray First Nation Traditional Territory. Together with local Indigenous partners we worked to help us heal ourselves, and our lands and waters, that have been so damaged.
