Since 1971, the Ecology Action Centre has been making change at the regional, national and even international levels in areas as diverse as marine conservation, local food and renewable energy. We work closely with communities and make strong use of science. We were alarmed to learn that Atlantic Canada, specifically, Prince Edward Island, could be the birthplace of the first genetically modified food animal in the world to go to market. Through interbreeding, GM salmon could genetically contaminate the magnificent but endangered Atlantic salmon, thus putting wild populations at risk.
How we helped
Lush's donation provides seed money for a public and retail campaign against GM salmon, and supports the grassroots works already underway. The commercial development of GM salmon will have major impacts on wild salmon populations, as well as Canadian food systems, yet there is currently very little public awareness about the issue. Lush's donation will help change this.
