Friends of the Rouge is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded to raise awareness about the need to clean up the Rouge River in southeast Michigan.
Their mission is to promote restoration and stewardship of the Rouge River ecosystem through education, citizen involvement and other collaborative efforts, for the purpose of improving the quality of life for the people, plants and animals of the watershed.
Friends of the Rouge has three main program areas: public involvement through river restoration activities volunteer monitoring of water quality, and a school-based environmental education program.
How we helped
Lush will help support the Rouge Education Project, a school-based water quality monitoring program involving elementary, middle, and high schools from across southeastern Michigan. Students perform scientific hands-on exploration of the Rouge River, including evaluating chemical, biological and physical parameters of water quality. Students are further encouraged to take action to help the river based on their results. Funds received will provide critical support to continue operation, including the incorporation of new technology and informational materials for schools.
31 schools, over 2,000 students, more than 80 teachers, and over 100 volunteers from dozens of communities will be reached through the Rouge Education Project in 2016.
