Koru Kenya seeks to empower marginalized African communities through economic empowerment and community currencies. By giving communities the power to create and issue their own community currencies backed by local goods and services, people have the ability to break free from the cycle of poverty and establish thriving markets.
We use approaches such as participatory education and in-depth research and community profiling to understand needs and design community currencies with meaningful impacts. This work has been fought for, against private banking interests, for years in Kenya and is now being established as a best practice for sustainable development programs worldwide.
How we helped
Lush funding supported the Community Currency Program in the Kangemi and Kawangware slums of Nairobi, Kenya.
