Planting Justice empowers urban residents with the skills, resources and knowledge to grow organic food, expand economic opportunities, and ensure environmental sustainability in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Planting Justice has built more than 310 edible gardens across the Bay Area, designed a culturally relevant environmental curriculum that serves more than 3,500 high-school students and adults per year, created living wage green jobs for 16 formerly incarcerated adults, and orchestrated a diverse education program that has reached more than 65,000 people throughout the Bay Area.
How we helped
Funds from Charity Pot paid for materials for urban permaculture community gardens and six additional urban permaculture school and community gardens, including Matilda Cleveland Transitional Housing Center, the East Oakland Youth Development Center, Beyond Emancipation in East Oakland, the Homefullness Project in East Oakland, 100 Black Men Charter School in East Oakland, and Hamilton elementary school, for a total of 12 community/school gardens.
The culture of these institutions, and the lives of our students, have been enriched by the new urban gardens at each site. The mentorship of our diverse educators has resulted in relationships that model achievable pathways to resilience, health and livelihood for our students who are struggling to preserve through the violence and anxiety of structural poverty and the impacts of mass incarceration. Planting Justice now owns a “big blue bus” that we use to take youth participants on bus tours of the community garden facilities, as well as regional field trips to food justice projects and sustainable urban farms throughout Northern California and the Central Coast.
