Prison Yoga Project

Prison Yoga Project was founded by James Fox at San Quentin State Prison (CA) where he has been teaching yoga and mindfulness practices to determinate and life-sentenced prisoners since 2002. PYP was founded with the goal of healing addictions, developing emotional literacy, promoting conflict resolution and violence prevention. We believe in Restorative Justice and provide a method of improving prisoner health with a focus on changing behavior; we believe in addressing the damage done and providing tools for self rehabilitation. We’ve helped hundreds of prisoners by instilling self-control and fostering accountability. While they’re ‘doing time,’ we focus on violence prevention, impulse control, mood disorders, depression, despair, addiction and PTSD.

How we helped

LUSH funding supported the establishment of multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs for prisoners based on restorative justice and mindfulness dialogue.
