Rainbow Refugee

Founded in 2000 and run entirely by volunteers, Rainbow Refugee is a Vancouver-based community group that supports and advocates for people seeking refugee protection because of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. Rainbow Refugee engages in outreach, advocacy and public education on LGBTQ+/HIV+ refugee issues in many different forms, including: - holding information drop-ins where LGBTQ+/HIV+ people who are considering a claim, or are in the process of making one, can learn about the application process and what community resources are available to them. - providing information, education and support to people seeking to sponsor refugees in crisis.

How we helped

There is a critical and growing need to provide updated refugee assistance on our website. Our existing site was made in 2007; the creation of a robust, up-to-date site – with full resources for refugees as well as their potential sponsors – will allow for 24/7 information and support, as well as make online donation opportunities available. These updates will directly assist refugees both currently in Canada, as well as those seeking to leave countries where their lives are literally threatened for being LGBTQ+ or HIV+.
