Spirit Bear Research Foundation is a collaboration between the Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation and conservation scientists conducting locally relevant, ecosystem-based wildlife research to address pressing conservation concerns in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest. In addition to advancing science priorities relating to bear populations and the ecosystems that support them, Spirit Bear Research Foundation is committed to supporting local scientific monitoring capacity and incorporating perspectives, knowledge, and priorities from the Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation into the development and implementation of scientific programs.
This donation from LUSH has allowed us engage with the youth in our community, connect them to the local environment, and guide them in an exploration of the pressing conservation concerns facing our Nation. We are now able to provide conservation programming at our community school and through extra-curricular activities. It has also allowed us to create youth intern positions that offer meaningful employment opportunities conducting locally relevant, applied conservation science. In addition to advancing scientific knowledge, LUSH has also helped to further our vision to support and assist with the development of local scientific monitoring capacity.
