All About Oats

Soothe, hydrate and scrub

The benefits of oats are out of the bag.

Did you know that oats, the chewy bits that grace our breakfast bowls and beloved oatmeal cookies, are actually the seeds of a grass? Although they’re best known as a food, oats make a wonderful addition to cosmetics too. We use hundreds of pounds of oats per year, creating fresh handmade skincare and haircare inventions.

Why oats?

Oats may look unassuming, but they’re actually little powerhouses of fabulousness. They’re full of vitamin E, B vitamins and loads of minerals like magnesium. They also contain avenanthramides, a natural compound that’s antioxidant and makes quick work of soothing irritated skin and redness—this is why oatmeal baths have been around for centuries to soothe things like sunburns!

There’s also beta-glucan, which comes from the cell wall of the oat. It forms a protective film over the skin, helping to seal in moisture. This component does double duty by locking in other active ingredients too, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin and work their magic.

Oat milk

While oat milk might be the latest trendy plant-based milk to hit supermarket shelves, we’ve been making our own for ages! We take a measured pile of whole oats and wrap it up in cheesecloth. Next, the oversized oat teabag is steeped in hot water, getting swirled around occasionally. At the end of the steeping period, the bag of oats is squeezed to get any last lingering goodness out. The oats are composted, and a rich, creamy oat milk is left behind.

You’ll find it in skin-soothing staples like Oaty Creamy Dreamy Shower Cream, where it’s blended with other calming, hydrating ingredients like rose water and fair trade organic cocoa butter. Oat milk also plays a key role in our bestselling Dream Cream and Sleepy Shower Gel—skin-comforting innovations that leave bodies calm and soothed.

The oat milk love isn’t limited to the shower and body—it works wonders for your face too, in Sleepy Face Naked Cleansing Balm and Dirty Shaving Cream.

Whole oats

The benefits of oats don’t stop at oat milk; they’re also an awesome natural exfoliant. They’re gentle enough to give a soft scrub to even the most sensitive skin, and naturally biodegrade when they’re washed down the drain, never damaging our waterways like The Solution is Natural.

We blend them into our moisturizing Oatifix Fresh Face Mask along with fresh organic bananas to gently exfoliate, soothe and hydrate in one sweep. You’ll also find them in Parsley Porridge Soap for a refreshing scrub while you wash, and in Ceridwen's Cauldron Bath Melt. Once the rich fair trade organic cocoa butter base melts into the bath water, a muslin cloth filled with oats and flowers remains. As you relax in the tub, sweep this little package over skin for a gentle, decadent scrub.
