Dear North American Lushies,
As we watch the events unfold across the United States, we truly can’t imagine what it’s like for so many of you, our beloved staff, at the center of the outrage and upheaval in response to George Floyd’s killing. Especially just as we thought we’d turned a corner on the Covid-19 pandemic. And while we don’t know what it’s like to be you at this very moment, we can share with you what it’s like to be us. We knew we wanted to speak out, that we were overdue to stand with the Black community and say—proudly and loudly—that Black Lives Matter, because they do, and they always have. When we posted across our social channels on Friday, we knew that words on a screen were not going to be enough, but they were a starting place. And now we begin the work, with you and for you.
As a company, our words aimed to humbly relay that we want to be the best ally, support system, resource and friend that we can be to the Black community while also asking ourselves how can we do and be better, both as a company and as a leadership team? Before Covid-19, we had begun the work of leadership and strategy development to align our leadership behaviors with our commitment to Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity (BID). We have established a BID advisory board who are now supporting us in developing learning outcomes for BID training to roll out across the organization. We plan to roll out full staff diversity training beginning in early July. We are having challenging and courageous conversations and opening ourselves up to the uncomfortable so that we can better understand the ways to remove barriers and ensure that everyone feels safe, heard and included.
We are working with our P&C team to open up and facilitate spaces for our staff to come together and simply be together during these tough times when many are feeling lonely, scared and exhausted. And as a campaigning company, we are looking at how to turn our words into actions that create real systemic change for Black communities, including dedicating funds to those organizations in need. As always, we need and welcome your help in ensuring our ongoing actions are the right ones and we commit to communicating our progress frequently.
It’s going to be a long road ahead. The world today feels very different than it did a week ago and each day holds new challenges and, unfortunately, division. Our excitement about re-opening shops and seeing our customers again may need to be delayed in some communities to ensure safety and security for all. The escalation of tensions brings us great concern and we will remain steadfast in our words, actions and commitments. We called for an end to beating and killings, racial profiling, mass incarceration, impunity racism and suffering—all injustices woven through the fabric of our society for centuries. Our work ahead is ambitious and it’s going to take all of us. We’re ready, and we can’t do it without you.
