What Does Citrus Do for My Skin and Hair?

Brighten and tone with vitamin C

Citrus is naturally filled with brightening vitamin C, along with other vital nutrients that tone and detoxify your skin, leaving it looking and feeling refreshed.

The scents of orange, lemon, grapefruit, and lime are immediately recognizable thanks to their signature zingy fragrances. But take a deeper look at these beautiful ingredients, and you’ll discover there’s more to them than just their fresh aroma.

Where do they come from?

The rind (or peel) of citrus fruits features a waxy, bumpy texture and white pithy under layer that keeps the delicious fruit inside protected from the outside world. But it’s within the peels that you’ll find a huge portion of the fruit’s essential oils.

To get these oils, we use a process called cold-pressed extraction: the rinds are squeezed to extract the oils. Doing this process without the assistance of heat helps retain the oil’s flavor, aroma and nutritional value.

What are the benefits of citrus?

They’re cleansing and toning

Loaded with enzymes and antioxidants, citrus fruits and essential oils are also great cleansers—it’s why you’ll find them in so many products from household cleaners to cosmetics. If you’re looking for something with a little exfoliation, Don't Look at Me Fresh Face Mask’s got you covered. It’s packed with fresh lemon juice and grapefruit oil to cleanse, as well as gently scrubbing ground rice to remove dry skin. The grapefruit infusion and lime oil in Ocean Salt make this cleanser great for leaving skin refreshed and radiant. It’s also packed with a heaping dose of fine and coarse sea salt to give skin a serious scrub. And for a healthy glow there’s Happy Skin Enzymic Facial Exfoliator made with brightening fresh pineapple juice and gently exfoliating bamboo stem extract.

They’re shine-enhancing

In haircare, the natural acidity of lemons and limes causes the outer portion of the hair strand, called the cuticle, to lay flat and reflect more light—adding incredible shine! For some serious mega shine, add Big Shampoo and Big Pressed Conditioner to your haircare routine.

The citrus fruits in Enzymion Moisturizer help keep oily skin looking matte and clean throughout the day.

They’re brightening

Vitamin C has been a wildly popular ingredient in skincare for the last few years and for good reason: it’s a great way to get fresher, brighter skin. Vitamin C can act as a chemical exfoliant, gently removing dead skin cells without any tough scrubbing. Some of the citrusy and fruity products that can offer a bright effect on skin include our Enzymion Moisturizer with fresh papaya juice and organic lemon infusion and Kalamazoo Face And Beard Wash with fresh pineapple juice.

Invigorating scent

Citrus also has the added benefit of having delightfully bright and cheery fragrances. And although that might not be about skincare, these fresh scents are naturally uplifting and will revive your senses. So, when you’re spritzing your skin with Tea Tree Water Toner, its light juniper berry and grapefruit water blend will keep you skin and mind feeling refreshed and good to go!
