Skincare Routine for Healthcare Workers

Keep your skin clean and healthy all day.

By now, we've all seen the images of the doctors and nurses with faces creased, cracked and marred by breakouts after wearing protective gear for very long shifts to treat Covid-19 patients.

There’s no doubt that the harsh disinfectants, dry hospital air, stressful work environments, and long shifts that a nurse endures on a daily basis take a serious toll on your skin. It can be a real struggle to keep your skin healthy and glowing in such a harsh daily atmosphere.

For residents, nurses, respiratory therapists or other healthcare providers that routinely work long overnight shifts in the hospital, time is precious. Multi-tasking products can be a real lifesaver because they cut down on the number of products you need to apply every day.

We reached out to some of these amazing frontliners to chat a bit about their pre- and post-Covid-19 skincare routine. They kindly shared with us how their skin and body are reacting to extra-long hours of wearing masks, surgical gloves and protective goggles. As well as the difficulties they face to keep their skin clean, fresh and moisturized with the little time they have to take care of it.

“I use skincare as a way to unwind at the end of the day.”

We hear you. Here is an effective and quick 3-step skincare routine with amazing multitasking products that will work those extra hours to help your skin stay clean and healthy despite the circumstances.

Cleanse, tone and massage your face with this clarifying multitasker.

A person applies Jade Roller on their face.

Step one: Cleanse

Finding a facial cleanser that, in addition to cleansing, also tones and exfoliates your skin will save you time and keep your skin clear for longer. Astringent ingredients like hazelnut oil, moisturizers like glycerin or murumuru butter will leave your skin balanced, soft and fresh for hours.

Cleanse, tone and massage in one step with Jade Roller Naked Cleansing Balm. This clarifying multitasker is embedded with mung beans on one side so you can make a luxurious facial massage part of your daily routine. A base of absorbent marula oil combined with nutritious hazelnut oil and refreshing peppermint will leave your skin soft and tingly-fresh.

Simply smooth the balm straight onto the skin or melt between your palms first. Massage in the oils, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. As you wipe away, water activates the chamomile vinegar and rose water toning phase to tighten pores and soothe flushed skin, leaving your complexion bright and balanced.

If you like to add a gentle scrub, Let the Good Times Roll Face And Body Cleanser is a great option for bright, clean and smooth skin. Made with maize flour, polenta and a popcorn topping, which we then combine with glycerin and corn oil to give you a very soft, moisturizing scrub. It is gentle enough to use on your entire body and has a dash of cinnamon powder to warm up your skin. Take a small amount in your hand, add a little water and mix into a paste. Massage into skin to gently cleanse, then rinse clean. Use all over your body for soft skin everywhere!

Step two: Tone

Our gentle, alcohol-free toners are made with nourishing flowers and herbs to leave skin feeling smooth, clean and refreshed.

A simple yet effective toner is Eau Roma Water Toner, made with just two active ingredients that work perfectly to calm, soothe, moisturize and balance skin. Rose water cools irritation and keeps redness at bay, while lavender helps to balance out the skin's oils, leaving it feeling soft and supple. Spritz your skin for an instant pick-me-up as often as you need it.

“Wearing a mask at work all day really irritates my skin. My skin has started to break out and flake off from friction. The N95 masks are very tight on our faces to ensure a good seal and can be uncomfortable when wearing them for 10+ hours.”

Step three: Moisturize

Crafted from essential oils and nourishing butters, these expertly-formulated facial moisturizers and serums help address a variety of skin needs and lifestyles.

Skin feeling tight? Relieve it with a generous help of Skin Drink Moisturizer all over your face and neck. We pack it full of nourishing ingredients like rose petal extract, fresh avocado and calming aloe vera extract to moisturize your skin and keep it feeling soft and supple, regardless of the season. Evening primrose, neroli and rose oils improve the skin’s texture and leave you with a healthy looking glow.

If you’re more into serums, Full of Grace is a solid moisturizer that's packed full of hydrating tropical butters, calming chamomile and antioxidant mushroom extract to keep skin in fantastic condition all year round. Easily absorbed by the skin, it creates a soothing effect for the delicate skin on your face, helping you to maintain its elasticity, moisture and glow. Just melt onto skin, then massage the oils and butters into your cheeks, chin and forehead.

”I love doing yoga and spending time outside with my dog. I love taking baths on nights when I don’t have to wash my hair. But honestly, sometimes all I feel like doing is putting on my comfiest sweatpants and watch television. I think we all need to be gentle with ourselves and do whatever makes us feel good.”

“What's the part of my body that gets the sorest during or after work? Definitely my hands! I have sensitive skin that doesn’t react really well to all that handwashing.”

Take care of those hands

Extra handwashing leaving you extra dry? Here’s a mini two-step to keep your hands silky, moisturized and healthy.

After all that handwashing, especially with harsh hospital disinfectants and long hours of surgical gloves, your skin gets dry and produces more dead cells which, can retain bacteria. One small scoop will brighten skin with fine sea salt and fresh lemon infusion, while softening at the same time with cupuaçu butter, argan and extra virgin coconut oils.

Help is on the way!

After that nice scrub, give your hands…a hand! Helping Hands Hand Cream is our miracle-working, calming chamomile and cocoa butter cream that has been saving marvelous mitts for years. Soothing honey, moisturizing almond oil and nourishing cocoa and shea butters protect and care for hardworking hands and make them soft and flexible once again.
