The human foot is one of the most complex parts of our body. It contains 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 tendons—and it carries the weight of our bodies with every step.
Being such a hardworking body part, it’s no wonder that nearly 8 in 10 Americans have experienced a foot problem. From nail issues to blisters and chronic pain, foot issues can very quickly impact our overall quality of life. As anyone who’s ever had a pesky pebble stuck in their shoe would know, when your foot’s uncomfortable, you’re uncomfortable.
Here are 5 everyday tips for keeping your tootsies in tip-top condition.
1. Keep ‘em clean
This may sound obvious, but the first step to happy feet is good hygiene. Wash your feet daily and dry them completely, especially between the toes. A clean, dry environment goes a long way in keeping your feet healthy!
2. Preventing the dreaded blister
Who hasn’t had a day ruined by blisters? Whether you’re waiting tables, hiking trails or out for a night on the town, a blister on your foot is the worst. Reducing friction between your skin and your shoes is the name of the game when it comes to preventing them. Make sure your shoes are a good fit and don’t rub or chafe. What fees like a minor annoyance at first will quickly become a painful situation! New shoes are a classic blister-causer, so take your time allowing your feet to adjust to the new style. If you’re set on rockin’ them for a full day right away, bring a backup pair just in case.
3. Protect yourself
Our feet encounter some pretty dirty and dangerous surfaces. And most of the time, we have shoes and socks to protect them. But when we’re barefoot, our tootsies are exposed to sharp bits (Lego, anyone?), dirt and potentially contagious infections. So whenever possible, keep your feet safe by wearing shoes—toss a pair of flip flops in your gym bag to wear whenever you’re at the pool, or in a public shower or changeroom. Your toes will thank you!
4. Treat those feet
At first, pampering your feet may seem frivolous. But keeping your feet in tip-top condition can prevent annoyances like dry flaky skin and cracked heels that can develop into painful aggravations—not so frivolous after all! 5. And relax
Just like the rest of our body, stretching and massaging the feet help keep them strong and flexible. Next time you’re settling in to watch your favorite show or call your BFF, give yourself a relaxing foot rub, a soothing foot soak or roll a tennis ball under your foot to keep muscles in a relaxed state.
