The Science of Scrubbing

Digging deep into ingredients

Did you know that your body is always making new skin cells? No, like ALWAYS.

Desquamation is the natural process of shedding skin. It happens in a constant, regenerative cycle where cells turn over individually (rather than all at once, like a snake). How quickly this process happens is completely dependent your age, skin type, the products you use, and even where you live. However, it’s not a perfect process and as we get older, it happens less frequently, allowing a greater build-up of old cells to remain on the surface of your skin.

A good scrub helps your body shed those old skin cells to make way for new, bright skin.

Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub

This is where exfoliation comes in handy. Scrubbing—even just once or twice a week—will help prevent dry skin, clogged pores and uneven texture, because you’re actively removing those old cells, plus any stubborn dirt and grime. It’s a great way to invigorate dull skin and makes it easier to absorb the uber-nourishing butters, oils and nutrients of your favorite moisturizer or facial serum.

So, what are you scrubbing with?

When it comes to exfoliating products, natural ingredients all. the. way! Not only do they keep our waterways safe (unlike plastic microbeads that do way more damage than good), but natural exfoliants take it one step further by offering your skin additional benefits that go beyond a simple scrub.

Let’s check out a few…

Sea salt

Sea salt is a natural exfoliant made up of sodium and chlorine. It offers a gentle abrasive action to slough away dead skin cells, while sodium, magnesium and other mineral help soften the skin. Rub Rub Rub Shower Scrub and Salted Coconut Hand Scrub are both packed with fine sea salt for a gentle exfoliation, while fan-favorite Ocean Salt Face And Body Scrub is made up of a beautiful blend fine and coarse sea salt for serious scrubbing.

The charcoal we use in Dark Angels does more than simply scrub, it absorbs oil and dirt, too!

Dark Angels Face And Body Cleanser

Charcoal

For years, charcoal has been the go-to ingredient for scrub aficionados everywhere! Ground down until it’s super fine, a single speck of charcoal has a massive surface area which makes it incredibly absorbent. So, while you’re scrubbing with Dark Angels Face And Body Cleanser or Coalface Facial Soap, charcoal also works like a magnet to attract all the unwanted dirt, grime and anything else that might leave skin congested.

Sugar

Good news! Sugar is actually great for you! Bad news, this article is about scrubbing and not about eating, but that’s still good news to us. You see, sugar is a humectant—it pulls water from the air into your skin, so when you’re using The Rough With The Smooth Body Scrub or Bubblegum Lip Scrub, the sugar also helps hydrate and protect your skin as dry cells are buffed away.
