Lush Cosmetics: What is Agroforestry?
Meet Juan Bronson of Izabal Agro-Forest. This important group is devoted to regenerating the land and soil quality in Izabal—an area of Guatemala devastated by deforestation.
What is agroforestry? For Juan, it means a group of crops all working in harmony to create something as close to a natural forest as a farm can be. This means planting some crops to shade the others, or using organic forms of pest control that won't contaminate the forest floor or harm local wildlife.
In conjunction with Izabal Agro-Forest we purchased a 223-hectare farm formerly used to raise cattle. The goal is to work together to plant and harvest many of the ingredients that we use in our products, such as vanilla, avocado, coconut, cacao and black pepper. At the same time, we want to make sure that the land is allowed to thrive, and that local farmers, groups and other businesses can benefit from the production.
